Why do people automatically assume they are being lied to when someone makes an excuse for not turning up to a meet?

If its happening too many times then maybe, just maybe, you should look into the way you set up these meets.

Only time weve had to cancell was due to a familly emergency, gave as much notice as we could. The people were fine, and we arranged an alternative date.
