"....so why do we still do it? From the minute you're born you're in a one way ticket OUT. I don't tell 4 x 4 Drivers not to drive them or have more than one & cause more danage to the dnvirinment, or a booze hound not to drink & go home & cause chaos, or people shopping to stop collecting even more carrier bags that will go into landfill, or Dictators & their Opposition rebels to stop using nerve agents on their innocent citizens, or for ConDems to consider arming more extremist cranks so that one day there's another Saddam Hussein, or for people who clearly can't afford kids to stop having sex & adding to an already fucked up world. Let me smoke away from you in peace with my fellow addicts & leave me the feck alone. "

"My mate ran marathons, never smoked, never drank alcohol was fit as fuck and got killed on his bike. Why did he cycle ? " my mate smoked his whole life since the age of 9 & gradually progressed to a 60 fags a day habit so much so that he never had the lungs for cycling or any other physical activity...suffice to say he's now currently in his 80's & still alive...why didnt he not take the tram?

"Everyone dies at some point if your times up its up " yea we all must die some day but speaking strictly for myself here I like living & id rather die later than sooner & possibly avoid an agonising & soul destroying death via cancer & I believe I have am obligation to my friends & family & fellow man not to expose them to any unnecessary suffering also the economy is bad enough as it is without me burdening the NHS for costly treatments on account of my self indulgence... But I suppose im not that much apposed to people having a relaxed approach to shortening their existence on this mortal coil as we have to tackle the ever more serious issue of overpopulation...the government should make smoking compulsory in nurseries & give out free days to kids of parents who cant afford to buy them for their kids...

"gave up 3 n half years ago on patches an will power" good on ya mate keep it up! I used to smoke & I look back on it & wonder why the hell I ever did in the first place...I guess it was just because everyone else was doing it for social acceptance or something ...but then again I was always a rebel & one for breaking the rules & not conforming to thw norm so when I realise that everyone was smoking it was reason enough for me to stop..it was only later I was thankful I did as I discovered the true nature of its nefarious impact on the health of a great number of people I've lost as a direct result of smoking poor buggers....that couldve been me!

"I honestly don't mind smokers my mum is one so kinda used to it. As she says chocolate is bad for us but we like it so she likes smoking why should she give it up lol x " chocolate is actually good for you in moderation...smoking isn't good for you in any measure ...and no one says she has to stop...my question is what is the motivation people generally employ to justify running the gauntlet to I'll health & unnecessary suffering.... this is of course my personal opinion based apon my unfortunate extensive experience with having lost a numerable amount of people to smoking related illnesses...im less able to bury my head in the sand & justify it to myself than others seemingly

"I can tell you WHY I started. I always looked really younger than my years, so my thinking was I might appear older if I smoked. Some of it was peer pressure as other friends smoked. Some possibly because my Mother smoked & was used to it around me. It was also a different era. Despite being an anti-smoker myself the choice was mine, no-one else's. I still think I don't look my age so think how I would've looked if I hadn't experimented with all the things that supposedly age me, are bad for my health, will shorten it etc. "

"everything you enjoy in this world is bad for you, " Well possibly if its over indulged in. I met a young lad in hospital who was only 25, ex RAF & ex Rugby player when I was having my first ever stay (in my mid 40s). He had lung cancer yer never smoked, exercised regularly, are healthily but lung cancer ran in his family - so he had a lung removed. I hada collapsed lung from catching a d*unk woman. I was do shocked. (I also have up smoking for 6 months but refretay started again & was yet again addicted(. Another friend who plays football regularly, cycles etc has had more trouble with cartilage problems, swollen joints etc than I've ever had health issues. Likewise his (now) 21 yo son who played football had to have a knee operation with similar issues. I will probably add more cases as I read further posts, but my main point is that no-one is immune from cancer, or any other health issue. Despite the reduction in smokers cancer ceases have actually risen. So what's the other links that cause cancers? Mobile phones, more traffic on the roads, modern living? Ok I've wandered off from what Ninj asked - why do we keep smoking. Less people are smoking, tho ironically young smokers have slightly increased, but the overall figure is coming down. Why do folk smoke - well simply... It is one of the most addictive substances. However where smokers were once a substantial majority they are increasingly a minority (& a great income revenue for Govts to hammer until they no longer can. At which point they'll move onto the obese folk etc. Yet if there are few jobs that will have sufficient pensions & few youngsters even thinking about pensions then they in turn will become a sort of lower class dependent on benefits or working till they drop.) So until I become a non smoker again (which no doubt I will when I can't afford it or don't wish to) then all I ask us a little place I can go & enjoy my vice in private or with others who wish to partake in the same vice.

"everything you enjoy in this world is bad for you, erm I beg to differ...exercise & eating healthy isn't bad for ya" There's exceptions to that rule too. Some folk can never smoke, drink etc & still drop at a relatively early age. Some clients I have are well into their 80s & smoke with few health issues other than the usual hip replacements due to falls. Yet others I know can be addicted to keeping fit & suffer all sorts of health issues. This was particularly noted with the last company I worked for where the sick days amongst the younger members were so through the roof they withdrew sick pay (despite the fact the older workers actually had less days off). So what makes the younger generation so ill?

"Everyone can point to people who live healthy lives and have health problems and the people who live unhealthy lives and do just fine. If you take a large sample size then it is clear that living an unhealthy lifestyle is more likely to result in health problems. Most of the things that are 'bad' for us can be done in moderation and still be okay (alcohol, fatty foods etc) but that's not the case with smoking. It's responsible for over 80% of lung cancer cases, the majority of bladder cancers and oral cancer. It also increases the risk of various other forms of cancer. People can make their choices in life as to how they want to live and there's nothing wrong with that but let's not down play the risks associated with some of these choices."

" Most of the things that are 'bad' for us can be done in moderation and still be okay (alcohol, fatty foods etc) but that's not the case with smoking.." Linz, PLEASE don't take this the wrong way... So you can't be a social smoker (eg: only when you drink, only after a meal, only out with friends, 5 a day & NOT get some form of repercussion? Of course everything in moderation is a better policy/life choice than over indulging/doing it often but that's the same for EVERYTHING in life from crossing the road, to speeding, to eating McDonalds, to shagging. As a compete convert to anti smoking when I did give up I really do understand why non-smokers shy away from smokers. It STINKS BigTime. I'm not even saying that it WON'T increase health problems (trust me, coming from a family of smokers I really do KNOW the downside. First hand, I certainly wish my Mother AND my Grandfather had made other choices of addiction but they didn't. Whatever their justification I understand it. I dealt with it in the best way I could by nursing then - NOT the the non-smokers. Now no matter what an older generation tell the next generation they mostly ignore it & learn by their own mistakes. So my point, is if people want to isolate themselves by smoking, or sit on the Net when they are out in social company, eat McDonalds, not exercise (which I don't & still lookFABULOUS. Sorry, just lightening the tone), or drive a 4x4, or lift another poly bag at Tesco's just to throw in the bin, ignore the wars in the world, or whatever that's a choice. It may not be a WISE choice but it is a choice. Or in this case it's an addiction that started off as a choice albeit a poor one. I don't think you'll meet a smoker that doesn't feel even slightly ostracised or know the health risks. Still we all crave our addiction. However all that said, the OP asked why we still do it - the only answer is it is one of THE most addictive substances known to man. That simple. Again, apologies if this is taken personally or sounds like a rant. It's not. It's simply a fact that even most smokers wish wasn't. Smokers smoke because its addictive. That simple. Anyway back to the music, the sun, a drink in the hot sun & a ciggie. Hope yer enjoying the sun people.

I'm not beating down on them for smoking. My post was just a response to your earlier one about healthy people falling ill etc and some smokers doing fine etc. I'm just giving out some figures that show that anecdotal evidence frequently doesn't show the true facts. * Disclaimer the word 'true' doesn't imply you are lying. It's just the most appropriate term to use when discussing the bigger picture and I couldn't think of another one.

"Oh yeh I'd like to die with a drink in 1 hand a fag in the other and a man between my legs perfect thats the leading cause of house fires...people falling asleep/dying with a fag in their hand" Err can I just point out that cigarettes now go OUT if they are left to burn for a certain amount if time. This was made mandatory in order to stop house fires. The biggest cause of house fires is caused by d*unk or forgetful people & faulty wiring. The biggest cause of fires is probably caused by wee arseholes setting fire to stuff they shouldn't. Kidding people. Just lightening the tone again.

"....so why do we still do it?" it's the motion,it's the nicotine,it's the tar,it's all those other chemicals, they give for free. it's the general disapproval,it's the one with a drink,it's the new friends you meet whilst outside for a smoke,it's the first drag in the morning,it's the one before bed,and it's always your choice.
