In May 2013, Forbes reported that the photos do not actually disappear, and that they can still be retrieved even after their time limit had expired with a minimum of technical know-how.

It seems that some phones like the Android don't delete these images properly and they can be recovered. One forensic specialist has managed to recover 60-70 images from just one phone. It seems to be in demand for missing teanagers and divorce cases, what a surprise!

Almost all computers never actually delete files they just remove the reference in the file indexes and eventually the 'deleted' file gets overwritten. I have recovered a lot of deleted data from computers and cameras, even after a reformat by pcworld. Very clever people wrote the software, I just use it.

The problem with Snapchat is they advertised that once it was gone it couldn't be recovered, they obviously haven't done enough testing.
