Now did the kilts blow up in the wind yesterday or the downpours that kept appearing?

Well don't john & all the walkers.

No I escaped with legs a little bit stiff on Monday- I do keep myself fit though and did plenty of training beforehand! I enjoyed it and will certainly do it all again next year.

"Organisers of the Kiltwalk have defended the Scottish charity event's running costs after losing several partner groups.

Four charities have withdrawn as official partners of the event in recent weeks. Two cited concerns about the amount of money reaching them.

The event's 2013 accounts show more was spent on costs than went to charity."

Many charities these days seem to have become a sort of self serving industry with large wages for senior staff etc. It's becoming difficult to tell who are most worthy of receiving our donations.

This increase in salaries is directly related to an increase in staff, not an increase in individual salaries. A move taken due to the necessity of increasing staff in order to increase the number of events held! The CEO is only paid £60 - £70k well within the average for the charitable sector. The Kiltwalk have not broken any rules or regulations!!

What the BBC fail to report is the difficulties the charity experiences in other areas.

They do fantastic work and hopefully the ratio between operating costs and donations will balance itself out year on year. Like any change to an organisation it takes a while for the full benefits to be realised.

That seems an awful lot of expenses taken to the amount given to charity...it makes you wonder if giving to charity is worth it.

On another note, why the hell have I never heard of this...all those kilts on one place

Re your point on expenses. If it continues year on year then clearly their strategy is not working. Sounds like a restructure went on which can result in exceptional costs in the same year. 2013 was year 1.

Was speaking in general terms, I don't know the figures for this particular charity. A quick google search though shows that the NSPCC has a chief exec on £170,000 and a further 49 staff earning more than £60,000. Barnado's seems to be similar.

A lot of Charity Directors are taking a big skim off the top of what is donated, be careful who you give your money to

Unless I am reading it wrong the organiser has said that they have changed who they give the money to so the four charities will get less than they thought. It is still the same amount they are giving out to charities just spread out...which means more than half of what is collected goes to the four staff and whatever expenses for the website etc

They are dishing more out to local charities across Scotland. So the big four are not getting as big a percentage of the charitable donations.

I only used staff costs (pretty sure it is more than 4) as one example of increased operating costs. They operate from a city centre location, there are increased costs in relation to running an increased number of events.

More events should mean more income. If that marginal income doesn't cover the costs, it might be time to do something else.

Totally agree - but trying something new doesn't necessarily pay dividends immediately. Fingers crossed for the charity their 2014 accounts show an improvement

From what I can gather the only thing new is how they distribute the money that people give, IE they are spreading it around to more charities.

I don't know if a City centre place and some staff would cost about £750,000 or more but it seems very steep to me.

It does put me off giving to charity though

" A Scottish charity has replaced its entire board of trustees following concerns over the amount of money it was giving to charitable causes.

Four charities withdrew as official partners from the Kiltwalk earlier this year and its chief executive stepped down a few weeks later."

From BBC.
