I was in George Square yesterday enjoying Xmas with my kids and I was subjected to a large Apprentice Boys of Derry March through the Centre of Glasgow.

While I appreciate everybody's right to walk the Queens highway and I quite like listening to the bands.....I think it is in very poor taste to have it on a day when the City is heaving with shoppers and especially families at this time of year.

I beleive that quite a few of the marching bands in Scotland and expecilly in Northern Ireland of this ilk time their marches and route of their marches to get a reaction....all in very poor taste in my opinion

all walks, orange or green should be banned. what the council like to hide is that its our taxes that pay for the police and things, then they go and moan about government funding and how Edinburgh get more than Glasgow.

easy, cancel the walks, it makes for less police presence, less violence in the hours afterwards and a hell of a lot less closes and doorways being pished into by the hangers-on ( from bad experience)

its a funny one as i said before , a ban kinda goes against what i believe in as it in itself is a form of facism .

absolutely agree r.e policing etc. Yes a democracy allows free speech but only to a degree where people should not be subjected to offensive or intimidating behaviour. The public should not foot the bill for any elitist or triumphalism. March and play tunes but do it in a park stag as strathclyde or glasgow green then folk that want to attend or listen to it can do so by choice. Just a thought.

Some of you will recall I mentioned a Police Divisional Commander a wee while back.

One of her 'projects' before she retired was looking at a way of replacing warranted police officers with private security guards for marches, demonstrations and so on.

They would have to be paid for at normal commercial rates.

i think the general view is that folk should be able to view their rights no matter what they are. be it free speach or going for a walk BUT and its a big but they should have walks where they do not cost us the tax payer any money. so in the future why not have them on Gruinard as no one would be bothered if they got back from there and you would not need to police it as the only spectators would be sheep .

anyone can say what they like - if anyone listens thats diffrent - anyone can walk where they want and in this case the more remote the area the better . there is no way that you could ban walks as they would find some other way just as confruntational to do .

what i cant understand is this.....these marches are deliberate and open incitements of violence and hatred ok?..one religion against another, both of a mainly white background....but if a group of white protestants/catholic's were to march down the street and chant at say Hindu's or Muslims i think they might well find a cold cell for their bedroom that very same night.

soap box comin up here..... majority of marchers are of decent professions etc who want to walk peacefully.the majority of troublemakers wouldnt get into lodges etc they just like to latch on to anythin that gives them the opportunity to be violent under the pretence of it being for a cause.

i understand it can be offensive to others but everyone can be offended with anything. we live in a democracy and freedom of speech and like it or not the orange order etc is part of our history. im not out to offend or start an arguement its just my view!! and before i get accused of bigotry i dont ask what religion potentail meets are!! xx

Best advise so far

I was raised as a catholic and these marches don’t offend me in the slightest, our kids are also catholic and love watching the marches, in fact any marches for that matter, no words are sung, its bands playing instruments unless you make it something else, in fact the only words I’ve ever heard sung are god save the queen when they finish and if that offensive to anyone in Britain there’s something wrong somewhere.

Kids will happily watch any band play, it’s the parents that spout the hatred / bigotry nonsense.

I am no fan of anyone or anything which seeks to stop kids who live up the same close and splash in the same puddles from going to the same school. No wonder they end up at each other's throats in the streets and on the terraces.

och see i have to answer this afore i go.

the world we live in is awash with religous hatred , people are dying all over the world as a result from the world wars to present day palestine and even on our own doorsteps.

teaching kids about religion in all its guises is essential and more improtant is the teaching of tolerance of religions outside of your own.

my kids are going to a catholic school despite not being catholic , it is by far the best school in the area , i raised the issue that i do not want them force feed any type of faith , after a chat i was massivley impressed with the layout of the religous education and it sits very comfortablly with me the range and scope of religion they will be shown about.

by sheilding kids from other religions and educating them 'in the house' in my opinion breeds the current hatred that is out there today e.g your family by admission is steeped in orange tradition , no doubt you saw this on a regular basis and without being force fed anything it will have tilted your opinions , again in my opinion that cant be viewed as a good thing .

ignorance to others is the root of the issue , educate kids otherwise i say

i did my student placement in a catholic school it was an eyeopener for me but it was a better standard of education. smaller class sizes more money for resources etc. i was excused from mass etc because i was not a catholic but sat and watched. i seen things from both sides as my other side of family was devout catholics and it let me form my own opinions hence why i have no religious persuasion.

Back in the days of King Henry VIII, there was only one religion. Catholicism. When he wanted a divorce from one of his many wives, the Pope refused to grant it because it was against the religion. Therefore, King Henry decided to break away from the Church of Rome and form a religious group called the Protesting Catholics, being made up of followers who were protesting against the rules of the Catholic Church of Rome. The followers of the Pope remained Roman Catholics and the followers of King Henry became Protesting Catholics, later shortened to Protestants.

So at the end of the day, we all stand here as Catholics, whether Roman or Protesting, whether we like it or not!

i think you`ll find martin luther realised the innaccuracies in the way the catholic church was teaching from the bible etc and started to protest against it and wrote the ninety five theses and he is noted as the father of the protesting church or protestant,what he did was called the protestant reformation i believe

king henry started the anglican church or the church of england as a new branch of the christian church neither catholic or truly protestant taking england out of romes religious control for political aswell as personal reasons ( i.e ability to divorce etc as you stated above ) he also funded the printing of the first written english bible but by the time he started this church the protestant movement was already well under way in europe

ohh and to disagree we don`t all stand here as catholics but as christians, at least that`s my belief

To the one's that have a Glasgow postcode Glasgow City Council is as close to the Vatican as you can get. The place is riddled with favouritism and corruption, the powers at the top and including the police are wanting to cut police numbers at marches to cut policing cost, they are determined to stop them altogether. Also you only have to look at how a certain location in the east end of Glasgow is getting millions invested in improving the area for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and also a stadium upgraded all paid for by their good friends at GCC and the Scottish Government. Another thing a well known Rangers pub was closed recently after many complaints from residents about noise disturbances and GCC were desperate to shut the place down, well they succeeded and how they got round it, they somehow upped the lease to the value that the licensee couldn't afford the rent and had to shut up shop. Interesting that certain "establishments" in Glasgow's East End can be allowed to spout their words of hatred through rebel songs and yes, you have guessed it GCC sweep it under the carpet and are blind to the fact what goes on. All they have to do is do a search on Google and hey presto.

I applied for a job many years ago in the landscaping dept with GCC, did i get it...no, was it because my school name never started with St or is it a case off who you know gets you in??

Oh and to make it clear i am by no means a bigot and my mother is staunch Catholic, i am just giving my own opinions of what i can is going on with the organisation that allows the marches to take place.

at this end its the other way around allegedly! its not what u know if u want a job with the council its who u know and how far up the lodge your parents were!!

I would like to say that I to was also in George Square on Saturday and before we get into the rights and wrongs etc can I say that I was stopped by a group of Spanish tourists who tried in there best english ( alot better than my spannish I must add )to ask me what this Parade was and as most of the bands wore red uniforms they thought it was a christmas parade!

This got me thinking when we head of in Hols, and when we watch the parades in spain, moors and christians is a regular one do we think this shouldnt happen? No we dont, but we can find to make comments on here from people who have what it seems a moral high ground I sugest the people who like to band about words like " orange " " bigotry" "facisim" etc check the facts regarding Apprentice Boys as I feel we have all been to quick to condem and I suppose we are now starting to live in a nanny state come on lighten up its xmas I was going to say christmas but I didnt want to upset the MOORS !

we reconed this was an adult swing site

the catholic protestant thing, always surpises me.there is so much hatred,and animosity.yet all are christians.isnt it a sin,to have these feelings,if you are a christian.watch the life of brian.pretty much sums up religion.some idiot, will be trying to bring religion into christmas, if we are not carefull merry christmas and a happy new year.
