So having a discussion tonight about this.

Do u sellon ebay, Vintage or Gumtree and othr selling sites etc? Arranging Socials/Events etc?

New Laws as of 1st Jan 2024 mean if u earn over £1000 in a year you need to declare to tax.

How will this affect folk? I dont sell much on any platforms but have used fbook marketplace. So i need to keep a note if i sell and then declare if obver £1000.

Bit of a mindfield. Would be interested to know others opinions on this. X

well this is the first I have heard of this, I have never sold anything through sites like that. I find it would be quite hard to police from tax mans point of view like how they gonna know what you sold through what platform and cross checking it with a tax form. Just seems like a way for the tax man to scare monger people into filing tax forms for essentially pocket money. i know 1000 pound is a lot of money to a lot of people but over the year for HMRC to claim on is fucking pathetic . me personally would plead ignorant if they ever found out n chased me for it. I wouldn't stress over it either sell what you want for that extra cash, you paid the tax on the original purchase hmrc got there cut already. fuck em .

This is the new ruling : From January 1, 2024, HMRC will implement new tax rules affecting individuals who sell items on platforms like Etsy, Depop, and Vinted.

The new regulations require these platforms to record and report the income of their sellers directly to HMRC

It’s selling platforms nothing else as far as I can see

Just make a name up go on gumtree post add take cash. You can probably make a name up for most platforms post a phone number that’s from a burner. Been selling stuff since I was a kid, I also do legitimate sales.

There’s not a chance this will work!

Even if folk did have to fill in a tax return for every sale would anyone put the right price in?……

If I sold something for one hundred pounds would write that down and loss 20 percent to tax?… no chance! If I had to then I would say I was haggled down to a tenner and let them have 20 percent of that!

Who’s to say it didn’t sell for a tenner?…… will HMRC ask for the buyers details also?…….

How can say gumtree report the sale to HMRC?……

You list an item the buyer comes to your places does the deal and leaves how does gumtree know the deal went through?……….

Me thinks this is a load of BS

Pretty sure you’ve always had to declare this. The new bit is firms will need to share their data with HMRC.

If you’re regularly selling stuff for profit, you should check the tax impact.

The bit folk forget is you should also deduct the cost of the items. So it’s a £1000 profit per year.

Depending on how you acquired the item it could be capital gains or inheritance tax etc.

Yep. There’s nothing new about having to declare any income over £1k a year. Where that income comes from is irrelevant.

As far as I've seen, all that's changed is that the platforms are now required to notify HMRC, as are the likes of Uber, just eat, deliveroo etc

Yes seen this partner sites like PayPal etc have been doing this for years if you sell excessive amounts it asks you to create a trade account.

The point was made before it's£1000 profit yes but hrmc can ask to show evidence of this.

Do I think it will work NO

Imagine if ever platform customer submitted a tax return as opposed to PAYE the system could not cope the backlogs be horrendous.

I do think there is a need to stop unregulated income yes as off the books trade is dodging tax but not sure this is the correct approach

It's not a new law, this has been the case for many years.

What is new is the HMRC are now taking more Interest in online selling platforms for people who are running what is essentially a small business, not just selling on a few pre owned items.
