Wondering if there’s other options to be regularly checked rather than always going to gp’s, appointments are harder to get lately and was curious if there were other options x

Also curious to how often people actually get checked x

In Glasgow there's sandyford, so you just book online. Every area has it's own specific sexual health service, but they are separate from your GP and NHS records.

Every three months is the norm.

Jigs x

You can order tests through most online chemists also, self test which you send away, obviously at a cost to you though and it's pretty expensive, but worth it if you can get appointments at clinic/gp or your too busy to attend.

Fettle is an online service based upon the SH24 (which is free in some areas of England where costs are covered by the NHS). Fettle is slightly cheaper than using the online pharmacies.

I've used Fettle many times and find them excellent and much more convenient than taking time off work for appointments. Results are back within a few days

I found it was tricky just after covid but these days it seems back to normal. Very easy, plenty of options for appointments and you do your own swabs x

I found it tricky to get a routine appointment at Sandyford, but they're definitely there. Check the site a few times a day and eventually something will come up.

Superdrug do an online dr but it's £70 I think just for chlamydia test. Try googling gum clinics in your area but getting an appointment can be just as bad with them tbh.

Moray

I've been using online chemists (Lloyds, superdrug, etc) but can be pricey. Doesn't seem to be much in the NHS Grampian area and don't much fancy turning up at my GP's every 3 months for a check so online it is!

I use test.me

They do full scan post your kit in the letter box and you post back.

I keep a spare kit so I don't have to wait if I need to test.i also keep my recent results which you log in to retrieve.

I also do a Gp based one yearly I just go in do that's on my official records for safe measures.

Never had an sti so I doubt I deviate from always knowing my status

Google clinics in your local area that should come up with all the information you need

Online self test kits.

Costs you... but can you really put a price on your sexual health?..personally I think that's priceless

Edinburgh

NHS Lothian send out kits by post. Send back your samples and phone up for results.

Maybe check what's available via your local NHS clinic?

If it was all safe sex (as everyone says they practise) would the need for regular checks be an issue? By all means get checked but as regular as your talking?

Why not ? Tests can be free and it is better to be safe than sorry , The earlier things are caught the higher the success rate of treatment

Glasgow

Few interesting points on here and a great number of points. 100% agree that glasgows sandyford clinic is difficult to book with.

But getting into some of the points…

Someone mentioned that if you’re always using condoms you shouldn’t need to get checked.

First is a lot of the data that’s used for STI’s is actually from the 70s, and some of it not all that reliable. Some data suggests that even small traces of infection can pass from fluid to fingers, to condom and beyond.

The upshot is, get tested. Condoms are only 98% to 99% safe for up to 10minutes.

Plus a nunber of people don’t use condoms or dental dams for oral. So even if you penetrate with a condoms, if you exchange any kind of fluids, from kissing, oral or beyond, better to be safe and get tested.

Also if you’re using condoms for more than 10 minutes, safety of 98-99% drops significantly in some studies.

And even changing over condoms, there’s risk of fluid transfer.

Beyond the facts and figures, someone said about chalmers / lothians clinic. They are great, still not easy to get through to and only take calls between 9-1 I believe. They also only book about a week in advance.

But, bonus is they use the passcode and DOB log in, so if you need to show a partner you are clear, great!

However, bad news is no NHS clinic ‘tests for everything’. For example Trichomoniasis is typically not tested for, and it’s estimated that as many as 80% of people have oral herpes.

The sad reality is overlock down people got out of testing, and the figures post-Covid has shown a massive spike in STIs in Scotland.

However, ignoring the doom and gloom for a moment. Chalmers and most other council regions do post service, even if you’re further afield, and they do numerous clinics in east and West Lothian through chalmers.

There’s more I can go on about, but the upshot is even being careful, changing condoms, using dental dams, etc testing regularly should be a given. The data being used is old, crap, and was mostly focused on what is referred to as ‘MSM’. (Please note, this is the professional term used and not one I agree with) but men who have sex with men.

The data is skewed, and even today, the focus with monkey pox is focused on ‘MSM’. So if you or your partner even soft swing, better to be safe and get tested just to be on the safe side.

Anyway sorry for the long reply, but if it helps encourage people to get tested, then fantastic

To be honest I would avoid the GPs for STD checks & advice (former practice nurse so have fair insight). Would use local specialist GUM/ Sexual Health clinic for their expertise, equipment and onsite testing plus experienced counselling.

Edinburgh

have used a private service with a local clinic where samples and bloods are taken then sent to central lab.

Results within 3 days - full screening was more thorough testing for trichomoniasis and other less common virus. Also tests for hiv and hep a/b and c.

not cheap but worth it

"If it was all safe sex (as everyone says they practise) would the need for regular checks be an issue? By all means get checked but as regular as your talking? "

Absolutly its important to have regular checks even if you are practicing safe sex.

I've been using Lloyds Pharmacy online doctor to order my screening kits. seems to be a good service and not the dearest either. I check every 3 months.
