Housecoat is an old word.

But if I heard it nowadays I'd think of one of those slightly puffy ones with a floral design, and the person wearing it with curlers in and/or a hair net on.

"Dressing gown or goonie "

I was going to say goonie as that’s what I was brought up with but I tend to use housecoat more as most folk just look at me like if I call it a goonie

In my area a Goonie was an insult. Not sure if it was a secondary meaning, but I grew up thinking a Goonie was a certain type of person.

Iama say this once. Hooose coat= button, zip or some other way of closing at the front than a tie.

If its a tie its a dressing gown.

A gownie is a nighty or a night dress.

We are split.

Mrs Pf - dressing gown

Mr Pf - housecoat

It may be to do with how heavy/warm the material is… or something else entirely

IT changes

Growing up doon by Clyde it was and will always be a “ hooscoat” taught from a young age by our nana and maw!!

To “toffee nose” it up as a bathrobe or dressing gown would have resulted in laughter and name calling

Seems respectful to keep the history
