Yeah similar. Its an instant messenger on your phone that allows you to chat without swapping numbers

I used it for a while but there were some rumours going around that people were getting random charges added to their bill so i deleted

from what i remember it was just like whatsapp and really simple to use though

Yeah but i'm sure with whats app you have to swap phone numbers but with kik no swapping of numbers required

I haven't used either Kik or Whatsapp, but as far as I'm aware they both use your data connection.

So to my simple mind, it's a matter of juggling/balancing your text and data allowances, although Kik is of course anonymous as the other person doesn't know/see your number.
