Ok we have imperial and metric that confuses me. But, why do we have different size gauges for women and men? ie 44 inch chest, 32 inch waist... then you get size 10 or 14.

Why are we not measured the same and who started the measurements? It intrigues me.

Also who invented the cats eyes ? Strange i think.

The inventor of cat's eyes was Percy Shaw of Boothtown, Halifax, West Yorkshire, England.

I have no idea about the sizing system though.

Before the invention of clothing sizes in the early 1800s, all clothing was made to fit individuals by either tailors or makers of clothing in homes. Then garment makers noticed that the range of human body dimensions was relatively small. Therefore sizes were invented as a crucial, and underappreciated, step in the mass production of garments.Men and womens bodys are so much different.

Surely female dress sizing is a symbol of female vanity (dress size being smaller number than the tape measure size.

Indeed, female sizing was known in the trade as "vanity sizing"- every so often (as the female shape and fashion changed over the decades), the clothing size was reduced.

With the rise of obesity in the western world, sales people relised that it was bad business to keep dress size the same. Well, would anyone dare tell a size 14 that she had increased to a size 20 or whatever. So vanity sizing was introduced - so a historic size 14 would be smaller than a 2012 size 14.

Another example is that some clothing brand might offer sizes 10-12, 14-16 & 18-20. But another does 8-10,12-14, 16-18 & 20-22.

For a size 20 female - 18-20 sounds better that 20-22.

An women say men are vain.........

I had assumed that sizes were a bit of a compromise to take account of the fact that more women's clothes have to fit the upper and lower body - like dresses.

Interesting answers. i feel we should be miles or kilometres, not both, so size 14 then a blokes actually got to say his size? femanist? i dunno lol i will take this fight to Brussels to get equality lol
