Some great choices from others, but such a list can't be complete without David Ruffin and Bobby Womack.

Don't forget the man who was called the king of soul in his time, Sam Cooke.

I hear all of you and good shout with marvin Gaye and Edwin Starr but Curtis mayfield had a wicked voice but was slated by berry Gordy at the time..don't figure.

I never said it did. But it's not as popular as it used to be. Can't say I'm particularly bothered as I like what I like and don't care if others do, but it would be cool to see these type of acts back in the charts.

edwin starr was going till the end, james brown too,,,,artists like judy street and martha reeves still tour, not all are around but a lot still goes on...the charts wont be a place for them, who would want them in the charts? its good loving somethings that others havent got a clue about.

Doesn't have to be the original artists though, does it? Nothing wrong with new artists coming along and doing that style of music.

Besides, I'm sure a lot of current artists in popular music now would reference some of these artists as influences. Only they have changed it up in someway. Stevie Wonders entire back catalogue must have been sampled by one hip hop artist or another over the past 20 years.

Bbc4 now. And yes it has to be original artists for me, some covers are ok, but some are shite, such as soft cell doing judy streets what! Or that dick abs from 5 doing stop sign! Shocking

Most of the original artists are either dead or in no fit state to perform lol.

And when it's a band that has none of the original members? Maybe time to call it a day?

Lots of greats mentioned but can't believe no one has yet said Levi Stubbs. A voice filled with sheer emotion and for me the ultimate. And another to rival any of them would be Jackie Wilson, a voice like velvet.

For a voice that'll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up just listen to Arnold McCuller backing James Taylor on the video of the live rendition of 'Shower the People' - it's on Youtube.
