Depends how far you want to travel, if you come off the beaten track a bit in the Highlands there are heaps of spots to choose from

Don't think it works the same anymore, they've apparently changed the formula.

Ayr

Yes, they changed the formula, so it does not work as well. However, anything with myrtle in it (candles, soap) apparently works.

The Highland Soap Company do products that have myrtle in them - think there’s a shower gel and body lotion at least? Def works a little bit

There's a nice bit on lochlomond you have to get the boat across from ardlui though as its pretty hard to get to. Once off the boat go onto the path take a right and follow it past the 2 bothy it's about a 30 minute walk and it'll take you to a sandy bay absolutely lovely

I’m not a million miles away from you and there’s plenty of wee spots. There’s some cracking spots just by Mugdock Park

What's the rules nowadays can you still set camp anywhere you like as long as you are respectful? What about campfires, as long as they are small and contained are they allowed?

That's part of it, look up the scottish outdoor access code which gives your rights responsibilities for different activities. the detail is important, a lot of areas are now under threat from over use and poor camping practice. If we don't all up our game large areas of scotland may well lose the right for wild camping the same way that loch lomond and the trosachs area has

Over there

Best place = not the one anyone tells you about on the internet, and certainly not if it's eve been on Instagram.

My nicest camp is in central Highlands, a km long sandy beach looking down the length of an inland Loch with a few Munro's and Corbett's It's got a waterfall 30metres away for a morning shower, and flat grass between a few trees for the tent. And less than an hour walk in.

Bliss.

The next one is on a river island, only way in is by paddling rapids. Flat grass, a fire pit and some wooden seats. Again, campsite perfection

I think Glen Etive gives you good options. It's remote but Red Squirrel camp/Clachaig is close when mother nature decides to piss all over your plans
