I think as long as people know what's going on, they'll be happy when you're open.

What I'd say is to make sure things are setup the way that makes you (as owners) feel content with it.

Hi guys, here is an update. We have outside nearly finished, reception is done bar a few small things and locker room is finished. Lounge was ready till we had a flood last week so had to fix a few things but now back on track. Bar was done but got a new bar top to fit. Rooms are all complete but need a touch up here and there. Bdsm side almost finished. Heating and lighting all installed. Toilets all fitted. The disabled toilet it is still to be gutted. 99% of people are behind us those who are knocking us. I have one pair of hands and a few good friends helping out when they can we are really trying to be open in October.

CJs is a super friendly club and the people are by in large very open and candid. It's all begins with yourself - you go in all positive and wonderful things happen. Insecurity leads to a rubbish experience.

I often find with clubs the folk that moan its cliques at clubs are are the same ones stood not making any effort to talk to anyone clubs are the same as anywhere u have to make an effort

Personally I been to both cjs and after8 found chatting to folk at both venues very easy and have made some amazing pals from doing so

I have my reasons - my comment isn’t strange at all

Many places are cliquey whether they mean to be or not, but those who go on a regular basis tend to stick to the same people, any new comers (pun not intended) who wish to join in, are then ignored.

How do you know this if you have never been. Wouldn't it make more sense to experience something personally before sharing your opinion as fact.

I’ve been to A8s a handful of of times, other first timers or second timers chatted to us, also weird ones, but regulars, ignored us, we tried to start a chat, all we got was, “excuse me, there’s……over there…..” I know that doesn’t make it cliquey but when you see a large group of people all huddled together the body language says, don’t come over, that’s cliquey-ness!

What do you base your findings on. Strange comment

I have been to After 8 when it was open - so…. Fact!

Maybe they didn’t want to chat. Like I say we didn’t have that experience. Everyone chatted away to us no issues and we didn’t feel like there was any “cliques”. If we had seen any groups that looked like they didn’t want to chat we just wouldn’t approach them it wouldn’t have ruined our night either way.

totally agree with you.All clubs are the same.If you put the effort in then you will reap the rewards. If you are quiet and hiding in the corner then why should other people make the effort ? Everyone makes the effort and its a great night.I've been to After 8 and CJ's quite a bit and I just love going out meeting like minded people and having a laugh. Gx

So not true never heard so much crap in my puff

I’m a regular at many different places and I go out my way to try and approach newbies every week I’m

There ! And I’m not the only one to do so, however nothing worse when it’s like trying to pull teeth with newbies or folk sitting with faces like fizz because they’re not getting the attention they want

It's not a fact if you're basing one club you've never been to on an experience from another. All the clubs are different.

It's like comparing Oranges to a Snickers in terms of which makes the better omelette.

How can you find a place you have never been as cliquey? Not fair. Been 3 times and did not feel that.

Clubs always have the 'regulars' / 'the gang' and then there is everyone else... from what I have seen every club needs a wee gang who set the scene. Not necessarily cliquey ...

I was asking about your comment on cjs.

You have never been but finding it cliquey. Is it me being thick but I don't understand how you can find a place cliquey if you have never been

Glasgow

My first ever post, usually just lurk and read the forums, but thought I would give my thoughts.

I first went to a club 10 years ago to broaden my mind coming from a conservative family upbringing, so completely out of my comfort zone. I went to CJ’s and it was awkward, but mostly on my part.

If it wasn’t for a lovely woman who started chatting to me, it would have been a completely awkward night. I just didn’t feel like I fitted in, but that was me.

I didn’t go to another club for a few years, and when I did it was After 8. It was a fairly quiet Wednesday night and I spent all of my time, sitting on the couch, wondering if I truly belonged in such a place.

A couple of months later, I went again, this time I was remembered and chatted to a couple of people. I never went often, a couple of times a year for about two years before the plague hit.

I have never done anything in the club. I am someone that, to this day struggles with confidence and striking conversations with new people, although I never have an issue once I get speaking (as this message proves). Being a single guy and not having anyone that I could attend with, I never went with expectations, only to broaden my mind, meet people and see what comes from it.

I enjoyed some of the nights when I didn’t speak because it was the atmosphere. Sometimes I did get conversations and that made the night better.

I know my struggles, but I think people take what they want from the nights. I have seen people that are just bold as anything (who I wish I could be) who will join any conversation and make an opening with ease, breaking through the ‘clique’ that comes with people who regularly attend and have formed close friendships.

Then there are the ‘expectants’ who come in with a cocky attitude just thinking it is a different kind of sauna, who then leave very disappointed.

Then there are people like me, who probably don’t belong, but like the open-mindedness and, frankly, the liberating idea of the clubs, who took 10 years to get naked at CJ’s greedy girls' night in August and participate.

I look forward to After 8's return, it is where I felt most comfortable (a Glaswegian being comfortable in Edinburgh is always a big deal!).

I enjoyed my time at CJ's in August far better than I did 10 years ago, but that was because I tried to engage a bit more, trying to find an opening to start talking, which worked but might not if I go again.

You can find out a lot about places just through chat. I’ve never been to Torture Garden but i know you’d have to be a confident person to be able to wear clothing items that are not worn at regular parties, or show body parts that would be deemed inappropriate in other clubs.

Couple times I was there we ended up on our own to watch the TV…. Even the ‘bar’ stuff wouldn’t chat…. A few times when we’d arranged to meet another couple there was fun, bIt hit or miss.
