You poor soul. But there is help. Complex carbs, brown bread, brown rice first step. Takes about 5 days to become acclimatised to it, taste rank at first, but then after the 5 days your body will crave it and then when someone gives you the white kind again, you will say, 'that is pish'. Taste buds have changed, great first step. This will take care of that mad insulin spike you are getting.

Fasting is fucking brilliant too, but takes some time to get use to. That diet the BBC guy ( cannae remember his name, thin, with glasses, I think it is Mosley) always parrots the 5:2 diet. 5 days on food, 2 days fasting. That keeps the insulin spike at bay too.

The keto diet which again takes time to get use to, this runs on fat rather than carbs, will def sort you out, you might even get out of type 2 with this one. It is restrictive though, but it can be tasty if you are willing to learn some dishes.

If you were type 1 then keto is a no, type 2 then this will help you.

I would start to change with the KISS protocol (Keep it simple stupid). Small changes to the brown carbs and see how you get on. I wish you well my internet friend. You have got this. Love, Beyond xxx

Switch to a whole food plant based diet and cut out alcohol. It’s possible to reverse type 2 diabetes through diet alone. There’s a lot of peer reviewed info out there. Good luck

near you

I follow a low carb diet now and it has been bringing my 6 monthly blood results down each time and I’m currently in normal healthy range. Hoping I will get to remission and be off meds soon

That’s the worst thing you can do while diabetic type 1 or 2. And as for the 5.2 diet you don’t fast on the 2 days, you eat a balanced calorie controlled diet, on the two days you eat however amount of calories you are allowed on those days. It’s different for each person.

My friend was diagnosed with type 2 about 5/6 years ago, it was hard for her to change her eating habits for a while but she coped eventually, she’s also on medication for it, cut down/out the sweet things, jam doughnuts, chocolate, sweets etc also pasta, bread, you can change your white bread if that’s what you eat to brown/granary/spelt/rye bread but also limit it to one or two slices a day. Also fizzy drinks, with high sugar content.

Since doing this she’s also lost 4 stone, so losing weight will help too, if you’re over weight.

You could also try joining a slimming club like Slimming World as they can tailor it for diabetics. I know someone who joined, when they reached their target weight their blood sugar was almost at a normal reading, so their medication was reduced.

But please don’t take diet advice from anyone on here, you don’t know who they are and they could be talking pish. Take advice from your doctor/diabetic clinic

I will bow to your expertise, but low carbs does seem to work for loads to reverse type 2. Remember Keto is not, 'no carbs'. It is low carbs. Greens are carbs and you eat a shit ton of greens on keto. As for the 5/2, the term on the two days is, 'intermitting fasting'. Hope that is more precise.

First diagnosed in early 90s lost 20kg and no need for tablets thereafter until recently when weight when up. Most effective is the Keto diet however, it is hard to maintain, well it was for me.

The sudden change in some food habits is what will get you the most. Just be sensible and don't buckle to the cravings.

When I was diagnosed I had luckily started cutting sugars out a few months prior, and the only change I had to make suddenly was fizzy juices.

They should have offered you some time with a dietitian to go over things, and the dietitians are also trained up to give you other advice about diabetes control.

....down the Rabbit Hole with a shotgun

I've been Type 2 for about 10/15 years now.

Frankly, I do struggle with it at times. As others have said, you should have been offered appointments with dietitians. You should also be assigned a Diabetes Nurse at your local surgery, if they have one.

If you can get a good dietitian, that you're on to a winner. Unfortunately, the one I got was worse than useless. They didn't tell me a blinking thing I didn't know already. My Diabetes Nurse(s) have been of far more help and have offered me some great advice over the years.

If you've not been offered one on the NHS, get yourself a meter. The ones I have (OneTouch) connect via Bluetooth to my mobile so I always have a record of my blood sugar readings. I find having them a massive help in managing things.

Also found that "eat small and often" has been halfway decent for me and drinking lots of water helps too.

Also, exercise regularly as much as you can. The strictures of my job, however, mean I can't do that, as often as I would like, and I definitely feel it's held me back, so to speak.

Me loving Haribo and Lemon Chicken has nothing to do with any of it, of course!!!!

Good luck dealing with it all!!!!

"Get your physician to prescribe an injection called Xultophy."

They used me as a test-subject for Liraglutide, and it worked wonders. I dropped 6 stone in about 4 months.

However like any medication you eventually build up a tolerance to it. So they took me off it, and luckily the pounds didn't pile back on, just a couple.

I’ve been doing a keto diet for the last couple of months, and recommend looking into it and seeing if it’ll be as good for you as it’s been for me.

Cuts out all potatoes, rice, bread and pasta , which can be difficult for some. As well as cutting out basically all processed sugar too.

I’ve managed pretty easily finding food I enjoy, whilst keeping my carbs below 30g most days. Tracking the intake with MyFitnessPal.

Typical meals : Chicken Fried Cauliflower Rice, Taco Bowls, Filled Omlettes, Baked Egg & Spinach, Steak and Salad. All the bacon, sausages, cheese, roasted veg etc…

No more vanilla latte’s, black coffee with double cream and sweeteners.

No full fat cola. Exchanged for Diet Pepsi or Irn Bru Extra.

I’ll stop rambling, but I’ve lost nearly 20lb in 6 weeks.
