Back in them days, they used their sporran to hold the porridge. The would take a fistful out and dunked it on a stream/river. The tighter their fist, the less likely that they lost any porridge.

Think there is a statistic somewhere about the various countrys that give the most to charities, Scotlands way ahead of quite a few larger/wealthier countrys, to be proud of certainly.
