Looking for ideas on west coast , balloch , milngavie areas, also any tips on equipment we should and get and where to get it

Mr is a newbie but Mrs not been in years , go outdoors been suggested for the basics ?

That midge stuff - hate them and the reason I’ve no done camping lol , will say to mrs about it as she will know the stuff you guys mean I think x

Beinglass farm campsite next to the drovers inn is a great campsite

But take plenty of avon skin so soft or whatever midgie repellant you use

Lidl usually have good deals on camping equipment. Really depends on how serious or lightweight you want to camp.

I had the full on camp kitchen, electric hook up, etc. still have a few things. I’ve still got a gas stove and pots. Inflatable beds are great as are the ones that convert into seats for during the day. Cool box and ice blocks are handy too.

Another nod to Beinglass Campsite for somewhere not too far away. It was the first place we went camping and we definitely caught the bug (even while getting eaten alive by bugs).

Some stunning places in Scotland to camp.

Depends if it’s some wild camping or campsite based if you have an electric hook up at camp you can take, kitchen, lights, pumps etc to make life easier. If not basics and a stove

go outdoors is def the place to go x

Tbh look on Facebook for second hand equipment till you know if you’re going to be actively doing the camping you can pick up some great bargains

Depends what you want to do.

Wild camp or camp sites.

Wild camp is restricted from March to October in the national park area but, randomly you can still paddle out to the island and pitch up with no problems.

Just mind if wild camping take all your debris home and leave no trace.

Sites wise if around Loch lomond millarochy Bay is a good site ,right on the water and good pitches. Cashel is just up the road but I feel its more exposed there for tents.

Luss is also good site on the other side.

As mentioned midges are an issue. Forget skin so soft. It's not enough. Take smidge.

The quality of your camping experience is dictated by the quality of your gear imo.

Wild camping then your walking in your gear so it's needing to be lighter and will be more expensive.

Sites,weight isn't an issue as you can take it from the car.

It's still cold this time of year so make sure good quality sleeping bags and thermarests under the bags.

Loads of places to go if not limited to the areas listed, personally I'd point you to arasaig, 3 stunning campsites right on the beach.

Consider a good 4 season army bag,

Good surplus shop - go army , OakBank Industrial Estate, Block 5, Unit 5, 38 Oakbank Street, Glasgow G20 7LU

If i recall paid 45 quid each for last few from there Inc compression sacks. Check the zips and bottom of the bag.

Best time to camp without midgies is in May/June.

Smidge is great. Also get some citronella candles for use outdoors when sitting

What do you mean after 6pm? The wee buggers are out by the millions at 6 am. They would swarm in my eat and eat me!

Take some aspirin with you, crush and mix with a little water to make a paste then smear over bites and leave to dry, then remove, really works but don’t forget you have it on. It soothes the bites

What do you mean after 6pm? The wee buggers are out by the millions at 6 am. They would swarm in my eat and eat me!

Generally they disappear during strong sunlight or a bit of wind.

Hence why the little bastards tend to come out evening ,early morning.

Really also depends where you are.

West Coast island is a nightmare, coastal your usually OK. East Coast also better.

I tend to do a lot of kayaking and camping and it can be brutal.

A campfire also keeps them away, they dont like the smoke

(The bbq we use when we go camping gets used as a small firepit)

One place that looks amazing is clachtoll beach campsite up in lochinver, white sands blue sea looking across to stornoway etc, hopefully plan to go ourselves sometime

Absolutely.

Bit closer but just if not more stunning is arasaig. Multiple sites there.

Been in a few of them and kayaker around the coast. We'll worth the trip

I’m planning doing West Highland Way over 5 days this year. Just single tenting or bivvying is any women or cpls want to join for a section of it. Obviously need your own tent could be tight squeeze in a bivvy bag lol

There is a few places will portage the bulk of your gear to your next

Bed down point, means your not humping 5 days of kit,so just really need a day pack with water and some food. Rather than trying to hump all your kit.

it's definitely worth doing.

Depending how adventurous your feeling I highly recommend a trip down the spey and wild camp on the banks, we did it in 2 days but 3 is a easier pace. Stunning ,absolutely stunning.

If you don't have your own gear there is places who supply Canadian kayaks etc and the gear.

So many choices in Scotland to camp, we are spoiled.

Bed down point, means your not humping 5 days of kit,so just really need a day pack with water and some food. Rather than trying to hump all your kit.

Thank you for the information very much appreciated.

Doing it as I’ve described is more a choice, although I’ve set 5 days, depending on how I’m feeling I may try do it in 4, not arranging anything makes it more flexible.

Cobleland just before Aberfoyle has a cracking campsite with decent shower/toilet facilities and only a 30 min walk into Aberfoyle.
