I was listening to some Neil Diamond and the song came on, Girl, you'll be a woman soon. I used to like that song but on reflection the lyrics are incredibly creepy. Made me think what other songs might not go down too well by today's standards? And does it put anyone off the songs now?

Makes no sense whatsoever to me how you suddenly find a song creepy now that you previously liked. It's like saying your now suddenly highly offended by something you heard in the playground as a child and contacting the school to complain now. My point is more about a song suddenly becoming creepy or someone suddenly being offended. Your right miss muff it was a reflection of things accepted in the past and by all means OP you can say by today's standards it wouldn't be allowed and that's a fair comment but no need for added dramatics about it suddenly being creepy to you . Perhaps counselling would help OP. ?

Ah Zest, always looking to turn a peaceful thread into a battlezone. I didn't say I was offended. Just that on reflection I find the song a bit creepy. Guess I never really thought about it before. I'd hardly call that dramatics but you do seem to have a flair for the dramatic so sure you know best. You seem to be offended that I might be offended... Think that's my take on it miss muff, I've got to the age now where it could be my daughter he was singing it to and it jars me. Never really thought about it before.

Funnily enough I just thinking about posting a similar thread of songs that you didn't realise were mental!

I was listening to Sunscream - Love U More, which I have always loved then I hear the line "like father's r^pe their daughters" WTF. Also Money for nothing by Dire Straits ( and lets not forget Stings input to that song) as a child growing up I just thought it was a great guitar riff then I listen to the lyrics- "that little faggot etc". Everyone knows the controversial use of faggot in Fairytale of New York as well. But if you listen to almost every song from the 50 and 60's they're all exceptionally dubious in relation to young girls and a hell of a lot of songs about being 16. The piece de resistance though has to be Grease Lightning by John Travolta. If that was to be released today it couldn't get air play (and we allow some really foul stuff on the radio these days), but because it's from Grease everyone thinks it's OK. Holy shit, it most certainly is not - I don't wany my 8 year old daughter singing "the chick's will cream" etc. Then we have Barbie girl etc - it's mental!!!!!

Everyone thought it was a love song, but it was about a pervy photographer taking advantage on a photo shoot. Baby bird were open about it at the time, but as it was getting so much airplay they made the most of it!

Sounds like he's in love with a woman and is prepared to wait for her, she may be married or in mourning. And he won't be a bad man to her if they do ever get together.

Hahaha the innocence of kids though. I remember trying to get my then 8 year old boy to stop singing that Dixon cider song "fill her full with lots of Dixon cider" he had no idea why I was so horrified

I think it's more reflective on the era that the song was written. An era where many things were common place in main stream media such as casual sexism and casual racism.

Take some of the songs from the rock n roll era and the blues, the like of Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Fats Domino and Sonny Boy Williamson all sang about schoolgirls.

By today's standards they're definitely creepy, but I don't think they should be censored as we need to move on and learn from the previous era's.

Totally agree was all just a sign of the times, I wasn't suggesting censorship. When you think of some of today's songs like WAP there's not much improvement, just a different kind of yuk

Totally agree was all just a sign of the times, I wasn't suggesting censorship. When you think of some of today's songs like WAP there's not much improvement, just a different kind of yuk "

I'm afraid I don't know who or what WAP is, I'm not up with modern music as I think most of it is mediocre, lol.

Don't think that's a creepy one at all. It's about a woman who's partner can't give her a child so she has a 1 night stand.
