This is my first Xmas without loved ones having lost my mum earlier this year and having next to no family left is there anything that I can do to make the big day more tolerable and actually enjoy the day

I do plan a small Xmas dinner for me and the dog and that's all

What you got lined up tele wise? Favourite box sets or films?

I'd get you and the wee dug out for a good long walk Xmas morning, puff the pair of you out. Home, get the dinner on, coorie up on the couch, stick something funny on to watch (nothing overly sentimental) and munch your nut off.

It must be hard but remember it's one day. One day that we're all supposed to be full of the joys and all that shite right enough. Just try to keep yourself busy & distracted x

Get yourself along to a homeless shelter and help out for a couple of hours.

Life can take friends and family in a short space of time leaving us reeling. Christmas seems monumental and un-get-over-able buf remember it is only one day and it is no different than any other day. Prep some of your Xmas dinner on Christmas Eve and leave yourself some stuff to do on the day. Have some TV planned and DVD back-ups.

There are many, many people doing exactly what we will both be doing. Take it easy and don't get anxious.

These days Christmas is mostly made of Shite, Plastic, Chocolate and Strictly. The things and the people we miss cannot be bought - or sold. Be glad we had them. Let your grief be light and be fair on yourself - and your dog!

Having lost my wife to ill health, I've spent the last 3 Christmases alone, I have family but all of them live in various far flung parts of Scotland and are normally working.

So I book myself into either a cottage or an apartment somewhere other than home. This avoids having to face the memories from the past.

My best tip, don't dwell on the past for two long, hoist a wee dram for those that are no longer here and then enjoy yourself.

That's what they would have probably wanted.

Eat, drink and be merry. Take your dog out for a long walk then relax. I have spent a few Xmas days alone and actually quite enjoy it.x

Do you have any neighbours on their own? Chap their door and wish them a Happy Christmas. Make sure their ok.

They may be happy to see your dog as well.

The 1st one without family is always the hardest so be kind to yourself even if you have a wee wobble.

Maybe buy a wee box of chocolates or biscuits and drop them off to a neighbour you never know what might come of that but at least itl make you feel going doing something kind for someone else and it might be reciprocated from then on .

Whatever you do just relax and enjoy the day as best you can

I find a bucks fiz soon as you wake up starts the day right. toast to absent friends and then make the day your own. do what ever you want to. Xmas Dinner a curry go for it. just do you and dog.time is a healer and you can't rush it but you can enjoy yourself even on your own. I walk my dog Xmas day in a santa hat and and wish everyone I pass a merry Xmas.. works for me to get through the day

,I've done this the last 2 years, turns a negative day into a positive day for you and makes a difference to people who really do have nothing to celebrate at Xmas.

I buy a nice dinner and a pizza so

I can decide which I prefer on the day. I’ll phone family, which passes time, and maybe go out a walk.

Then sit in front of the telly with cheese, crackers and Prosecco and watch a film or two.

My daughter found her mum in May this year after she overdosed & lives with her nana out in the islands.

This year I am surprising her on Xmas day as I know it will be tough on her although we split up 2 years ago her passing hit me in a bigger way than I thought

If anyone else is struggling my phone is always on just drop me a message & happy to chat

Chin up bud know how you feel was a chef for 37 years so never got xmas or new year off no am bored out my head at xmas

I'm sure as a family in the past you had your own little quirks and traditions as all families do..

A certain box of chocs

A certain beer

A certain wine or spirit..

Certain veg done a certain way for crimbo dinner

You know those little things each family does or did that were unique to that family...

Do what you can to remember those memories and give a nod to l8ved ones gone..

Let's be honest here.. we know you big glasgee (spelt right ?)...guys dont cry...but you'd better have a box of tissues to hand..as it's amazing just how often when you're having a moment. A damm fly gets in your eye and makes them water..so they need dabbing

Regards suggestions to suprise a neighbour with a wee pressie...

Just be a touch careful..could be the guys from Still Game..and you may never get rid of them...!!

Have a good one in the circumstances and enjoy your moments of reminiscing

This is the 3rd year in a row I’m missing my family dinner through ill health. I’m gutted as it’s not often me and my siblings are together so really sad and frustrated I’m missing out but I’d rather keep my parents (who are aged 70+) safe.

So poor Ian is going to have to put up with me being a tetchy patient but think his plan is to ply me with booze and chocolates, so think he’s on the right track there!

My condolences to the OP and others for sharing their stories-I hope you get some time to grieve, reflect and take away the good memories you have of your loved ones. They’re always in our hearts.

Hope 2022 is a year with a positive outlook for everyone.

First year I've been on my own since 1999.

My brother and his wife said I could go round after dinner, but it's the first Christmas they've had without their kids or grandkids, so I'm just letting them have some peace.

This year could be last with dad, fingers crossed that I'm wrong but I'll get back to you this time next year on that. Right now it's very difficult seeing him in such poor health in front of me so, so far it's not been the best of visits at my parents right now. It's all I can do just to hold it together

This year am helping out with a homeless charity. Serving up Christmas Dinner to family's and the homeless. As am on my own also . Have a little look online what's on in your area. This is my 3rd year doing so,and I wouldn't have it any other way,its rewarding and so much fun and great company,

The loss of a parent at this time of year is a difficult thing, seeing as the focus for the Festive Season is on family.

The best advice I can give anyone in this situation is to focus on the positives and good times. Don't remember them at their worst, as that will just upset you and you'll hold onto it longer.

Just think of all the laughs and good times you had with them. Remember all the fun stories they told you over the years. But most importantly remember the love they gave you in their lives.

Due to covid I spent mine more or less on my own. Kids made dinner and I had a couple of roast potatoes. Spent it in bed as I wasn’t well. No hugs for me until Thursday.

More and more people are spending Christmas on their own or much smaller groups than before.
