Totally agree, as a species we are probably the cruelest of all to any other living creature. We should punish animal cruelty by putting the perpetrator through exactly the same punishment as they inflicted on the animals. Not wanting to sound like a crazy animal activist but that is one thing that does wind me up.

Totally agree. I’ve had three rescue greyhounds, and you couldn’t get more loving amazing beasts. But I hate the whole racing side of things. But, if it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t have had three amazing loving companions.

Trust me those dogs won’t run if they didn’t want to, there are many failed ex racers that have been rehomed for that reason as they just won’t run.

Plus if you ever seen the dogs being loaded up to go race you would see their excitement as they know exactly where they are going.

Only down side to racing is the injury’s they can sustain but it’s a dog built to go up to 45mph.

It’s not like it was years ago the only dogs that get dumped are ones used for hare coursing which is illegal. Racing dogs are all tattooed and have to be responsibly rehoused at a cost of the owner.

as someone who used to race greyhounds,I find this comment a bit offensive. My dogs were all couch potatoes, weren't in kennels and got everything they needed and more. All kept after racing with one living to the ripe old age of 14 lying on my couch. Not everyone is cruel.

"Any animal cruelty makes me sad "

In what way is it animal cruelty?

It’s not different to people owning designer breeds such as pugs and frenchies most which are puppy farmed and bred to have long term health issues through irresponsible breeding.

Greys love to run it’s instinctive.

There not dumped , a long time ago it probably was the case but it’s so tightly regulated now it actually cost owners and trainers to rehome them as there all registered and have unique ear tattoos. So if one was dumped it would be easily traced back to the owners.

There will always be a few irresponsible dog owners but majority of the dogs a loved and very well cared for almost like a pro athlete.

Wish more people would consider a grey as a pet there such a beautiful and loving breed.

To be honest we didn’t either until we adopted ours just over a year ago, we got our direct from a trainer we had to go visit 4 times and socialize with the dog them have a home visit to make sure it was suitable.

We got to see first hand how the dogs were kept and how it all worked behind the scenes of the racing. All the dogs looked happy and healthy.

We’ve had to fill in lots of paperwork with the gbgb which is mostly ran by ex police.

Maybe we got lucky but was told this was pretty much the standard practice

It’s like most things only the bad ever gets published to suit one’s agenda. Any form of animal breeding has its low life’s. With the astronomical rise in dog prices there are plenty of rouge breeders out there now and unfortunately people are willing to use them to save a few ££££

A lot of the racing owners actually look after their dofs really well. The otger up sude is that quth so many d9gs there is a large gene pool, so they tend to have less genetic defects.

Ibjyst wish more people realused what great pets they make. They might then spend a coupke of hubdred quid adopting, rather than shelling out big m9ney on Pugs, Bulldogs etc.

I beg to differ.

Friends of mine rehomed an ex racing greyhound from the rescue centre (about 4 years ago) which was indeed "dumped", but not before the previous owners cut both its ears off with a pair of scissors to avoid the dogs registration tattoos identifying them. "Not an uncommon practice" say the rescue centre. The dog was found bleeding beside a dual carriageway.

She's a lovely well behaved dog despite what happened to her but very nervous around men. Unsurprising I suppose, considering what happened to her.

Wow we’re members of lots of greyhound groups and first time I’ve heard of this happening to a dog.

A sad story indeed

Tbf fair I’ve just done a google search and appears this does happen but would definitely say it’s a minority of retired dogs. As I’ve said before there will always be scumbags involved in owning and breeding animals.

In America it's even worse

They use the poor greyhounds to tow buses across the country!
