"...alternative to the best version thread which is running. I'll go first....Florence & The Machine - You Got The Love. The Candi Staton version is one of my all time faves and despite Florence's exquisite voice, she tears the fucking arse right out of this classic. Like original Kit Kats (fuck the chunky version!)....some things should just be left well alone. Over to you...." Completely agree, the original you Got the Love is on my dance play list. Flo should never have messed with it. Comfortably numb by the scissor sisters was blasphemous!

Romnan Keating and Fairytale of New York for me...even dumbs down the lyrics and loses the point of the songs. Ffs !

"The best cover versions are usually where the band/artist takes the song and does something different with it - and the worst where they just try to recreate the original. In saying that, if you think the version of "Fairytale of New York" by Jon Bon Jovi and Ronan Keating are bad - and they are, you should try the version by of all people Anita Harris and Mungo Jerry (strangely together). Agree with the earlier comments about U2's "Fortunate Son" (taking an already average song and making it even worse), Scissor Sisters' dumbing down of "Comfortably Numb" and anything from Glee. Can't believe, though, that someone mentioned Miley Cyrus' "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - although it is a pretty faithful reproduction, her superb voice makes it her own and she's done some other excellent rock covers recently. Similarly, Madonna at least also made "American Pie" her own (but then, the original annoys me). Personally, I prefer All Saints' version of "Under The Bridge", similarly Florence and the Machine's "You Got The Love" (although I am not a big fan of either her or the song itself), as a massive Doors fan, there have been worse covers of "Light My Fire" than Will Young's, which was actually more a cover of the version by Mike Flowers Pops. Oh, and Mike Flowers' "Wonderwall" is wonderful. And Richard Cheese has carried on the mantle for that kind of fun pastiche if you want to look him up. Marilyn Manson did great versions of"Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" and "Tainted Love" - and that comes from a fan of (early) Eurythmics and Soft Cell. And Moby's "New Dawn Fades" is excellent too. For some brilliant covers, do a search for Laibach - taking songs by the likes of The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Queen and making them every bit as good as the originals if not better. Oh, and then there's the lovely Nouvelle Vague and new albums of covers by Skids and Tom Jones... I prefer to dwell on the good ones rather than the bad." Check you...Full on Smashie and Nicey... ...Poptastic!
