came across a great app which lets you make free calls and video calls on any smartphone except blackberry its called tango, its cpmletely free and doesnt need the internet you can make free calls and video calls as long as the person has the app so spread the word and we can all be video chatting for free

Erm - call me cynical but before we all get tangoed, the app may be subscription free - but do our mobile service providers not charge air time as they do for any other voice or data transfer. Some how I doubt mobile operators will allow a voice or video calls app access to mobile networks for no charge. That would be like turkeys voting for xmas. I'll gladly be proven wrong but suggest peeps check the small print - both on tango and on your mobile price plan.

From their FAQ:

Tango uses your data network to place video calls and does not use up the minutes of your calling plan. If you have purchased an unlimited data plan, then your mobile provider will not charge you for using Tango. If you have a plan that limits your data consumption, then on average, approximately 2GB of data will be used if you make 450 minutes of video calls over 3G or 4G. Or connect over Wi-Fi for free calls wherever you are!

Spot on.

Only the networks can use proper calls (voice or video calling) over their network. The only way that a third party can offer calls if VOIP (voice over IP) which is how Skype works.

These apps are great of you are on Wifi (and have unlimited wifi downloads) or you have an unlimited date plan from your mobile provider.

Be wary of most mobile plans that offer 'unlimited' data as there is often a fair use policy, some as low as 500mb.

As far as I am aware they only networks to offer truly unlimited data is T-Mobile (the full monty) and ThreeUk (the one plan). I think even them have some restrictions but its to cover file sharing using their network. Some other networks may offer 'unlimited data' as a sweetener to keep an existing customer but not as a mainstream plan.

Giffgaff outdo all the major providers. I pay £10 a month for 500 mins, unlimited texts and truly uncapped data. Drop me a pm if you want a sim (members get paid for recommendations)
