Ok so I'm on a later bus just now and caught up in the school run. Is it me or is the hem line too high. A lot me those wee lassies don't leave much to the imagination. With the safety of kids in mind, what is an acceptable skirt length - ankle, below knee, on knee, above knee, mid thigh etc..

With the safety of kids in mind, there are far more important things to think about than the length of their skirts.

here not there

Well personally I do think some of the skool skirts are too short but my daughter won't wear trousers and the compramise is she wears leggings or tights under her skirt but its poor show that the change of things that we actually stop n think bout the skirts for school could be too short

I used to drive the school buses years ago (1989-2001)

Did one of what I thought was one of the posh Bearsden schools and the bus was overcrowded.

Had a few Senior girls (15-16yr olds) up at the front. One in particular asked me if I knew anything about antiques.......She said she found a tampon and wanted to know which period it came from.

Who the fuck worries about hem lines when they talk to the driver like that......

Just to clarify my point is that with the "stranger danger" from all manner of pervs etc on our streets etc., are our kids - for the sake of fashion - showing to much flesh these days. Where will it all end? Was chatting to colleagues at work today - one commented that there neighbour's girl had been indecently assaulted by a man at a bus stop on a cold dark winter morning waiting for the school bus. The perv's opening comment was pretty much -your legs go all the way up... Ok so you can't stop the determined perv but would a little more decnrum and less showing of flesh go a some way in managing the risk? Or does society accept that its ok for our schoolkids to dress as "wee tarts" as someone was heard to say on the bus today after the kids got off. Thoughts please.

I have a 16 year old daughter, fortunately she goes to a newly built high school and they now have a strict uniform policy, as far as I know when she leaves her mums house her skirt is just above her knee, but im under no illusions that away from home she rolls the waistband up, I hate seeing teenage girls going to school as if on a night out, I've seen men letch and perv on young school girls, how would they like it if those girls where their sisters, daughters, niece etc

But is it just their school clothes? Some of the slogans on tops can be awful. "future footballers wife". Really? Is that your life's ambition?!

Sad times.

As has been said earlier, kids will dress according to the fashions of the day and we just have to trust them to get on with it.

What worries me is the thought that some guys on here seem to think how the way some kids dress has anything to do with sex.

They are at no greater risk now than before. Indeed, they are far more aware of what life is about through social media and the internet and have a greater capability to raise the alarm than previously.

Live and let live FFS!

So parents should just allow their kids to do as they please?

When i was at school the girls wore very short skirts, nowadays they seem to wear trousers or skirts and tights, but then again i have moved to Scotland so they need to wear extra layers!

I'm in agreement with the op here... Kids are coaxed into growing up far too quickly by the media.... Glossy mags, teen mags and peer pressure etc.

They have no childhood... They want to dress like adults as soon as they can and that often involves wearing outfits that an adult would wear as a sexy outfit. A child wearing a sexy outfit is wrong. End of.

Yes, years ago, they changed clothes on the way to school, rolled up the hem line etc, but at least back then they probably had proper knickers on. Now it's the skimpy knickers etc under the short skirt.... The low cut tops. Do the parents turn a blind eye so not to rock the boat?

Steve

It really depends on the ages you are talking about.

There is still discipline and dress codes in school.

What I was indicating was that it is more adults looking at kids and having sexual thoughts that concerns me. What are we saying about kids who simply adhere to fashions?

Rape crisis ran a very high profile campaign about clothing not being an invitation to rape. I endorse this.

I agree . think skirts are way too high these days . I live directly across from a high school ,yes so all you clever ones know exactly where i am , anyway they are short , i dont think its anything to do with age , i dont remember skirts being that short , i think honestly think its all to do with the culture of our country now , fame , talent, financial gain and the sexualisation of our youth . I have two kids who live in Spain and honestly iuf i caught them wearing something like i see i would go off my rocker, ok they ten and nine but things are getting worse . i thinkk an acceptable legnth is just above the knee or just below . also manners cost nothing which these wee kids seemd to have abandoned long ago !!!!

What some people forget it they are kids. Chock full of hormones and exploring and experimenting with their clothes, hair, make-up, chat-up's and peer interaction. Escaping the parents rules and embracing their peers rules.

What we all must remember is, we are the adults, kids may look and act out like they think they are.

But we are the responsible grown-ups. Only fools watch kids and are attracted to them and their hormonal ways.

I see young would be adults practicing for the big grown up scary world ahead of them.

Westerners condemn burka's because that is like saying the woman is responsible for being attractive to men and tempting them so cover her body .... same principle applies here, don't blame the shortness of the skirt. Adults should be guided by their own moral compass.

And I love it when someone says what I'm thinking in a way that is more meaningful than anything I could type. Thank you.

As parents we guide and support. We should not dictate or sexualise something that is not.

In my daughter's school, their skirts are not allowed to be more than 5cm above the knee. In saying that, one of the new Yr 7's on Tuesday had a skirt that barely covered her backside. Whether she left the house like that I have no idea, neither do I know if the school mentioned it to her.

i think girls should be made to wear a shirt at least half way down their thighs. im years outta school and some of the outfits they wear nowadays. no wonder theres more teachers being done for sexual harrssment! if girls want to be respected then they shouldnt show off their ass's at school! if i see my sister out at lunch time(as i live not far fro the school ) i tell her off for wearing that sort of thing!

now I do feel ancient if you are old. I suppose it also depends where in the country you were schooled - different weather etc different clothes.

I hate seeing the girls in skirts that barely cover their arse & caked in make up.

When I was at school years & years ago I wasn't your typical schoolgirl like my friends. I was into metal & goth music & wore a long skirt that skimmed the ground....nothing on show from me

I think the short skirts look cheap & I'll never forget dropping my ex off at work (he was a teacher) & a pupil waiting to cross the road flashed last night's dinner when the wind caught her short skirt & I got an eyeful of her thong... Not nice

I'm glad I don't have kids to have to fight with them over uniforms!

Is there not something a wee bit hypocritical about this posting when we are (well some of us are lucky to be) engaging in swinging that would horrify others and displaying pics of our naughty (and aroused) bits for all to see.

Just a thought
