Hi, all. We're going to do the nc 500 the first 2 weeks in July.. any suggestions where to stop?

Lots of great places to stop up there .... but be well prepared for the midgies!!!!!.... they are a different breed up there

I’m sure you’ll get lots of great suggestions OP. It’s on my to do list so can’t add anything but if you use the search box there’s been a few threads on this before I’ve noted tips from for when I do. The bikers forum might be worth a look at also. Enjoy your trip

Thurso

I live on NC500 route it is relatively quiet just now but by July it will be busy. Make sure you have campsites booked as they are filling up quick.

If you need any help up in Thurso area just p.m me.

Stirling

Durness is a great place to stop and is close to the Smoo Caves and there is a huge zip line a little bit further along the road. Bettyhill is another good place for a stop and there is a great tearoom next to the laundrette if you want a bite to eat. We do e the NC 500 a couple of years ago and heading that way again this year hopefully.

Clachtoll has some great Beaches and isn't often talked about by people who are doing the NC500, Cape Wrath is also worth a visit simply for the views and to say you have been at the most North westerly point in Mainland UK, Rogie Falls, Applecross ETC are also well worth a visit. In face if your planning of doing the route in a week, Double it and enjoy all the fantastic countryside and towns and village's

Really anywhere west and south of tongue is beautiful.. Ullapool has a nice vibe .. as does the coast road south of there .. you are spoilt for choice

If last year is anything to go by, don't expect to escape to an isolated deserted part of the country. It was mobbed with tourists.

And already far busier for the time of year in terms of motorhomes.

There's lots of FB groups on NC500.

Some positive, some negative.

Positive ones can give tips and hints.

Negative ones are full of pictures of dirty campers, litter, illegal and bad parking etc.

I personally think there are different places to visit, which will be quieter and just as stunning. The NC500 is a massive marketing success.

This year there is going to be a shortage of places to stay, from cottage to campsite. Certainly by the roadside camping will be manic, too many people have in thier mind an to do so and avoid campsite fees and crowds.

If you're going those first two weeks, along with half of Scotland as schools break, I would have accomodation booked.

I would also be looking at places to go off the main route.

Am off to do the NC500 in the autumn, have a lot of notes jotted down for possible places to stop and wander so let me know if you find any that you think were particularly worthwhile

Sleepers in Rogart is a cool wee place to stop. Converted train carriages that are now a bunk house, nice local pub

I heard the other day they have now made it illegal to park in cemetery car parks

Truly thankful that when I was negotiating the route every 5 weeks, come rain or shine, it was not beset by impatient incomers flashing lights and hooting behind you when on a single track road!

Tbh when we were there last week there was like zero traffic I think the old met office saying rain and wind out most folk off, we went expecting a wet ride and we all caught the sun was amazing only traffic we saw was feom fort William down through Loch Lomond on the route home
