Got up this morning for work as usual,just after 7am out to start the car because of the weather wouldn't start ,so decided to phone a taxi , got to work that's all good,then got hit with the bill £10 For ten mins drive couldn't believe it from Irvine to crosshouse my first time in a taxi for years anyone else got the shock of taxi fares these days

like everything else these days prices are rising.

look at the price of petrol during the 1st lockdown compared to now and thats the reason why

I think when you don’t use taxis regularly you forget the costs.

I took (dragged) my youngest shopping yesterday so he could help carry the bags since I wasn’t taking the car and he asked if we could get a taxi home

I said no point shopping Aldi to save money then getting a taxi home

Needless to say he survived the wall home although think the roll n sausage from the burger van while he waited outside the shop helped

A few years ago I got a taxi from Glasgow airport to my house 6 miles away and was shocked at the cost. In the good old days when we could get a holiday abroad I phoned the local taxi firm and it cost me under half the cost of the airport taxis.

I drove a taxi years ago, and believe me, the operating costs are ridiculous. Whether you're renting a cab from a company/owner and paying £250-300 weigh in a week, or owning your own, where you're paying it up on finance, specialist insurance, and any maintenance, which can be a regular expense, you're basically trying to earn 2 wages a week. One to pay out on costs, one for yourself. Add to that having to pretty much work every Friday, Saturday night, Xmas day, New years eve...it's a tough gig, Probably even more so now, that councils have been handing out far too many badges.

The driver who took you to work OP, might have been sitting waiting for a few hours for the job, and might have been sitting for a few more after dropping you off.

I've still got good pals in the taxi game, and it's a lot worse now, than when i did it.

The lockdown has hit the industry really bad too. Any online deliveries I've been getting seem to be getting delivered by taxis drivers doing courier work, for less than £2 a parcel.

I worked for 1 day doing parcels with Hermes got between 50p and 55p per parcel, worked 7 hours for just over £14

Remember last year when my car was in for an MOT and there was no courtesy cars available.

Had to get a bus, cost £5 for 15 mins journey and they accepted contactless.

Last time I got a bus it was 10p and I was still at school.

Now in my late 40s

The good old days when at a busy bus stop after school, your pal would get on first, and pass his zonecard to you out the side window for you to get on for free.

I used to phone a local cab too Bob to pick me up at airport, but too many times, ended up standing in the cold waiting for ages. Yes it was a bit more expensive, (talking to one of the airport cabbies i was told the airport charge them fees for ranking there), but the way i see it, having spent hundreds on a holiday, an extra £5 or £10, maybe split between a few people, ain't going to make much of a difference.

Would rather drive than pay a taxi fare. Drinking or not drinking would not bother me either way. Can't stand the way some of them drive either, like they own the road, pushing their way out junctions , not using indicators ect.

Are you advocating drink driving here rather than pay a few quid for a taxi? If so you need your head checked.

Last few cabs I’ve got I’ve used Uber. Seem to be the best of a bad bunch. Although £5 for an all day ticket on the bus the last time I went for a beer in town (July) was a great deal.

Both way better options than drink driving.

I said I'd rather drive than pay a taxi fare.

Then I started a new sentence and said drinking or not drinking does not bother me.

Buses and taxis in aberdeen Are a total rip off. I once got at taxi from the train station he put the meter on at £3.90 before we even moved then due to heavy traffic we were just short of £10 before we got out of the train station. Took me the 2 miles to my house and was just short of £17. Mental.

From memory, you will be £4.20 or £4.40 before you pull away from the rank at Glasgow Airport. That's made up of ..£2.00 Barrier Fee to enter and exit set by and paid direct to GAA and £2.40 initial fee set by Renfrewshire Council.

NOT the Cabbies, they are toiling trying to make a living and have been decimated by the current pandemic and little/no traffic at the airport. I've heard reports of guys sitting for 5-6 hrs between fares, so in a 12 hrs shift they could turn £40? deduct £4 for two trips barrier fee, fuel, insurance, and weigh in? Tough Gig!!
