So I'm looking into changing my career path at the age of 50. Has anyone else done this ,later on life? Good idea or bad?

Not quite as late as you, but gave up a career in my thirties to go back to uni and get a different degree and train for something else. Was bloody hard going, but being that I was paying for it myself it motivated me to crack on and get it all done. Still in that second career, and still loving it

I don't think I'm general it can ever be seen as a bad idea, although it probably varies depending on the industry you're getting into. Some have a reputation for being more ageist than others.

My only advice would be to ensure you choose a career that doesn’t prejudice nature workers. I can see my industry (sales) becoming saturated with young people willing to work for fuck all and take on a huge amount of work that experienced staff wouldn’t accept.

I've an appointment tomorrow to discuss options and the financial side of things, in the end everything comes down to money unfortunately.

I need to change my direction because of medical issues as I work in the care sector and I'm getting reoccurring injuries which are causing me to have to take time off. It's an age thing lol.

So time to plan for a different future.

Considering you might have to work until aged 70 the way things are going, 50 doesn't seem too late to change track and find something you love

Go for it! A great deal of students in my classes were mature students (oldest being in their 50s) and had no issues they even did better because of life experience, they were also more serious about their work ethic

Something similar here. Went back to uni mid 30's. Was hard work but loved every minute of it. Really love to do it again

When I was in college we had mature students and when I got to uni I was slightly older than most but in reality still young. Even then we had mature students as well. They always did well, usually better than most, and people would always chat to them on the course and stuff! They got invites etc to the social side but given the fact they usually had families they seldom made an appearance.

So yeah, go for it!

You go for it .. nothing negative about education. Mature students have a wealth of knowledge which can be applied to learning which younger students don’t normally have.

I left school with no qualifications, hated school. Went to college then university in my mid 30s, absolutely the best thing I ever did. Opened up a new world to me. If you have the opportunity and the determination to change, go for it! Best of luck x

I am the same but all my injuries are caused through wear and tear because of the job and not due to age. Backs and shoulders can only take so much. Good luck in whatever you choose to do.x

I’d say go for it.

I changed this year, well partly forced upon me, but so glad and not missing the stress.

Only regret is not being part of a company of thousands - now just 6 of us. That’s minor tho.
