What makes you NOT get a tattoo?

Following from the other excellent thread, what are some of the reasons to not get a tattoo?

For years I’ve tried to put my finger on why I do not want a tattoo (although I do have one I got when I was 18). Only recently did SjA introduce me to the Buddhist concept of transcendence - its a complex concept but the bit that made me consider tattooing is how their is not a permanency of self. One is not the same as one who was previous. We change as we move through life. I like this idea and don’t want to be weighed down by tattoos of a past self as grow and change through life.

Yeah it’s a pretty complicated way of saying that and i don’t have opinions really of tattoos on others but it’s just not for me.

So what’s your reasons?

Pretty boring for me. I'm not against them at all, in fact a lot of them look great, but I've never seen or thought or anything that I'd like enough to have on me permanently!

This is such an interesting post. I believe that we do change and shed past versions of ourselves, however I think a tattoo could be a reminder of a past version of yourself that got you to where you are now. Like a really meaningful one. x

Skin is a beautiful organ i like mine as it is but it’s a personal choice

Some people have more ink than clear skin on their body again their choice

Mrs Pf has quite a few and they look great.

Mr Pf doesn’t have any. Although appreciates them on others. Mainly a pain thing for him.

I’m the same. It took me 5 years to find one in memory of my dad and it’s been 4 years looking for one for my daughter and I’ve even asked her help but I’m not getting One Direction on my torso.

I got my first in 98 then 2003 but because my daughter was premi and so many babies needed transfusions I decided to give blood and give tattoos a wide birth and that lasted 10 years.

Interesting that you consider a tattoo more of an indicator of permanency than the physical body they are applied to.

No matter where you go or what your experiences are, your body remains irrespective of what is drawn on you. Your thoughts suggests more of a mental link to the past than a physical one, or a mindset governed by external identity characteristics rather than internal "peace".

Fascinating, and by no means a criticism - I interviewed people for their reasons during my Psych degree, and it's amazing how entangled tattoos can be with identity.

That's what I love about the whole concept of it all. There are so many views/ideas/concepts to it. To some it is as simple as ohhhhh a pretty picture. To others there is much more depth as to why they do or do not have ink. It really as an interesting subject

Just never been interested in them.

I do go with what Ozzy Osbourne said in the very first episode of The Osbournes and it basically was that everyone had tattoos and piercings nowadays. To be unique you shouldn't have them.

As is shown above tattoos are a bit marmite (you love em or hate em), another way to look at that is they are a very personal choice. I have a few but dislike tattoos that are (in my opinion) either just a token tattoo (i.e. the person got a random one, just because) or means nothing. Mine are very personal, the art is unique and deeply meaningful (to me), I discussed them with the artist and are on a part of my body that is aesthetically pleasing. I see each one as part of me as much as other marks on my body like stretch marks show I’ve had children, a scar shows an operation or shows I’ve survived something, wrinkles show I’ve lived life. Bodies are not perfect and a beautiful tattoo shows something about me, it’s part of my story and even if it’s my past, that too is what makes me the person I am today. It’s very, very personal and I don’t regret any of them I’m glad to say. As to the argument re old age, ancient cultures like the Maori have them... quite frankly my dear Scarlett I won’t give a damn

I want a thigh tattoo but have slim legs with little fat on my thighs so presume it would be too painful to tolerate.

Preparing for a night out I can change my outfit and accessories 3 or 4 times. The idea of something that permanent on my skin is quite scary to be honest.

I see some beautiful, original tattoos which obviously have significance and meaning to the person and I can appreciate them. However, more and more nowadays, I think tattoos are a way of "some" people trying to signal how edgy or different they are when the irony is they're becoming commonplace and quite unoriginal.

Call me old fashioned (please) but I will never have a tattoo. I like the history of body decoration and I have Fijian relatives who have moari relatives and tattooing is a cornerstone of their ancient culture. I like that sailors of yesteryear would get tattoos from various ports on their travels and the history of that. What I don't like is the proliferation of meaningles tattoos all over the gorgeous curves of a younger woman .. spurious passages from the Bible or whatever written in straight lines across the lovely lines of the female form is a total turn off. Kids names dates small emblems of meaning in discrete positions fair enough, but anything more is just so unattractive for me. Guys or women with roses, bleeding skulls, Chinese stuff, barbed wire tattooed round their necks or women with chandeliers tattoos on their chest or abdomen I do not get at all .. really unattractive .. boak in some cases...

Anyway sorry if offends but it's just my opinion.

I’ve got tattoos but they’re out of sight and I’ve no other reasons for more I’ve got what I need and tbh I like having memories and tattoos are an expense that I’d rather be spending on making memories

I have 3 tattoos, all of them marking a significant point in my life, and they mean something to me.

The tattoo artist that did my last 2 is coming up to Aberdeen soon and I’m tempted to get another but...I can’t think of what or where...

My parents are extremely anti tattoos, so if had one it would be somewhere I could cover up....I’m 53 ffs

I think they are often markers of significant changes in people’s lives, so if your life is settled you are less likely to want one.

As much as i do not mind tattoos on others i admit i am heartbroken that my 23yr old daughter has now got 4. The latest on her thigh to go with a large one on inner arm and 2 on wrists. Not alot a mother can do as it is her body but i am still sad about it.
