New car advice

Looking for some advice/opinion on getting a new car. Currently driving a 12 plate corsa and long overdue an upgrade. Looking for something reliable, good fuel economy and not extortionate when it comes to repairs hoping to pay no more than 300-350 monthly in finance or personal contract hire. Heard skodas and hyundais are decent?

Skoda are good and reliable cars, also Kia who have a 7 year warranty. I wouldn't do a PCP on a used car unless its 6 months or less. Depending on mileage the you do look at electric also I think you can still get kick backs from the government and cost of charging is low, range is also becoming better. Used vehicle prices are high just now so older cars are worh bit more. Check out motor magazines such as which and Parkers website for opinions and reviews.

Hyundai are excellent as are Kia, watch the road tax brackets though

I would have advised German all day every day until recently, I repaired a Skoda (Volkswagen group) recently and by fuck all I can say is how the hell did vw pull the wool over our eyes to make people think they are good cars, bmw are the best German car at the moment but very expensive in parts and they break easily.

Mazda - avoid like the plague because of rust issues, same as Mercedes

Renault/Peugeot/Citroen has the best resistance to rust but not the build quality that’s needed, most people think the wiring is bad in French cars, not completely the truth, the wiring is adequate if they put them in the right places instead of against sharp edges that rub through

I would seriously recommend

Dacia (Renault platform) but with reliable wiring

MG, the Chinese have made a brilliant wee car and it’s still cheap

Volvo, since they got rid of the ford ownership, they’ve gone back to being almost bullet proof

Nissan qashqi are dangerous as the rear sub frames are made too soft and they crack, sometimes even snap at high speed

I replaced one on a 2 year old car and know of other mechanics that have done them on cars less than a year old

The Nissan duke is even worse for being made on the cheap

Cant go wrong with a skoda but they are getting as pricey as an audi now. Hyundai are good aswell as kia. Personally I'm a ford man through and through. The eco boost engines are fantastic great fuel economy and the power is there aswell.

Need to work out what you need in terms of size and space. And take it from there. If you’re buying new always check broker prices.

Have had a Hyundai now for some years and have been remarkably surprised with it. Would choose Hyundai again when it comes to changing

I traded up a Hyundai i40 estate last year. Best car I’ve had!! As folk are saying, Hyundai and Kia are more or less the same cars. Won’t go wrong with either

Had to laugh at the recommendation for an MG,,

Cheap Chinese shit dressed up under the badge, a warranty you cannot claim on and absolutely sky high parts prices and nobody else makes parts for them so you have to pay the sky high prices.

Avoid like the plague

We've had a Mazda for 2yrs, it's brilliant. Upgrading for a newer model next month but we'll miss the one we have. Shame we can't have both! Family have been with Mazda for years too.

Previously I've had Hyundai and a Vauxhall, both have been great.

Been running a Dacia Duster here in Spain. Dirt cheap to buy, reliable Megane engine and no extra bits to go wrong - they're pretty basic. Worst thing I can say is they're a bit under engined.

I second the comments on Mazdas and rust - I also have a three year old MX5 and have had an MOT advisory on rust!

Having worked on quite a few of them for servicing etc, the parts are not expensive, they’re well built and they are economical, not a bad car at all

Please remember that back in the day when Eastern European countries were seen as the enemy

Skoda, fso and even the worlds best made and most reliable car the lada were a laughing stock they still outsold and out lasted almost everything else on the road

They are junk, corrode like crazy. Horrible to drive, no acceleration and as for you nonsense about parts, £220 for discs and pads which won't last more than 20k

£206 for a radiator which is a common fault and they won't change under warranty. I could continue.

They are absolute tat

Sorry, we're talking cars. Don't get a corsa again, they're rubbish. Had a corsa as my first car. One with a manual c*oke* - fab won't allow the actual word but you know what i mean - so going back a few decades and it was brilliant. Absolutely unstoppable until i parked it in a ditch one icy evening. The new versions don't come close to how they used to be.

Kia actually has great cars and really like the audi A1 x

I bought a Costa last august and traded it in at Christmas. Terrible car Now, family had one when first came out and it lasted forever.

Decided take hit and transfer the loan and trade in difference.

Hi I have a Hyundai i40 1.7l diesel £20 a year road tax and I drive my car fast I don't do slow I usually get 50 miles to the gallon but when I got the motor way and sit at 70 mph it's 68 miles per gallon parts are dearer than vauxhall but cheaper than a BMW

If you are buying from a dealership then a comprehensive service package is advisable. As many have said BMW are Uber reliable but expensive on parts. My 2011 5 series came in over £900 for suspension arms, brake pads and service and mot.
