Just had a wee bit of a thought for people who are possibly out dogging throughout Scotland to put out GPS coordinates where they are when out looking for fun and it’s like a game of hide and seek with a good ending for all along with using GPS Apps.

I think the what 3 words app would work just fine, there ither meeting apps that tie in to what 3 words but they are supposedly for sports. each.juggle.warp

For instance we once left a pair of knickers for someone in Dumfries. They found them and sent us some interesting photos. We left them at "blend hook thanks". We didn't use what three words on that occasion but could maybe do that in the future

It is promoted atm that way here because it pulls at people's heart strings and more people will download it. The app was originally developed for bands to find "hard to find" locations. It's used for delivery services by thousands of businesses.

There were a few experiments done using the 3 word thing versus exact GPS and for finding things or following a trail the GPS was always best.

The 3 word thing isn't precise enough and would still require a little bit of searching.

The squares/grids for the 3 words aren't all the same size either, as they are smaller in more densely populated areas versus remote areas. So for instance in the countryside a 3 by 3 grid could equate to a 9 by 9 grid in London.

Let's get pedantic....

The grids are not all 3m squares. They can't be as the earth isn't flat.

Therefore as you near the poles the "grid" becomes smaller.

This is a problem with all map projections.

Using gps is the only accurate method of determining location on a globe (dependent on the accuracy of your equipment). The average root mean square physical accuracy of your smart phone is in the order of 5 metres under open sky.

So W3W won't really work,especially in an urban setting.

And W3W actually has a pretty reputation amongst the GIS (geographic information systems) community.

They just have a very good marketing team

My issue with W3W is that's its "owned" by a private company. This is not an open source, public service - this has been created by entrepreneurs who have gone to great lengths to shut down negativity by legal means, and who are making money out of proprietary algorithms - you cannot find your location without W3W permission. Imho its unethical to allow a business to dominate location services when there are already perfectly fine systems in place.

Yeah it's rather amusing to go to woods.dogging.gangbang if ever a place existed but w3w are profiteering off of a free service.

Much rather set up a geocache - where you're supposed to deposit a donation in a container

how about a site or an app where you post your rough location and preferences? so single male wanting male/males, couple wanting watchers/single male/males under 40 etc, people can browse and message and if you like the look of them, you can send them a time sensitive w3w code

if you're friends and trust them, they don't need to message first...

there could even be an uber type rating system to out serial timewasters, there'd have to be some safeguarding stuff as well

bloody hell I'm going to have to have a go at this now

I have see W3W used on dogging sites and I responded to one at the right time. I was in a woodland car park at the allotted time and nothing. Just decided that it was a wind up and a car came in. Parked about 4 meters away. It dark (about 5pm February) so I was not certain what was going on. Waited a bit then got out of my car. The window came down of the adjacent car and by the mobile phone light I could tell it was a couple. She was dressed to die for in a tartan mini skirt, black blouse, black stockings and as I found out later Ann Summers lingerie. They put the post on as a dare and 30-40 minutes later I was very glad I did dare to stay there.

W3W is a great way to share locations if your into dogging.

No need to be knocking the w3w app. It will save lives thats for sure. As a location finder it is perfect, as a way of telling people where you are, as a way to get emergency services to your exact location its a lifesaver, as a way to find family members broken down its so easy. Wouldn't be without it now.

Ok, back on track for what 3 words which is probably less precise but less obvious as a signifier of where you are.

This is a great idea. I've always wanted to look into dogging but always found it hard to work out when and where it's happening. Definitely interested in this idea.
