Watched an early episode last night with john hannah...seemed a totally different programme to rebus with Ken stott...

Do you have a preference hannah or stott...

Having read the books I don't think either are particularly well cast. I had wondered who would play Rebus well but have struggled to come up with any good suggestions. Maybe Iain Glenn or Kevin McKidd?

I had the misfortune of dealing with Ken Stott as a customer in a previous job. He was one of the most arrogant and ignorant people I've ever delt with and I cant watch or listen to any programmes he is in now.

I think out of the two Ken is closer to the character in the books, however I do think there are other actors who could have given a better performance

I was disappointed with both, to be honest.

Hannah wasn't able to portray the dark side of rebus, battling his demons, and the scripts were a poor interpretation of the novels.

Stott was better in that the scripts were closer to the novels themselves, but he wasnt the right ban for the job

I'd have thought Robert Carlyle would have been better

Defo Ken Stott, I met him once after the football and with his drinkers nose dishevelled look he is Rebus down to a T. A real nice person as well.

Ken stott looks better for the part but I’ve never seen it just read the books

John Hannah does not look tough enough.

I will have to watch it now to see if it lives up to the books but it seldom does.

Tom cruise playing Jack Reacher was a joke

I think John Hannah would be better in the role now than he was then. I’ve seen him in other stuff that made me think he had the chops for it... but he looked too fresh faced.

You’re supposed to think Rebus isn’t exactly good looking but isn’t exactly ugly either... and Ken Stott didn’t sit well in the latter... no offence to him

Ian rankin himself when asked this question on tv, smiled and said both were good. Hannah played a younger version of rebus and stott reflected the older version. Think he was just being polite to be honest as neither sat just right for me.

For me the test if a character has been cast right is when you read the books and can visualise the man from the tv as you read the book. For example when I reread the Harry Potter books I imagine daniel ratcliffe as potter etc. I never do this with either of these actors when I read rebus books. I personally think Ian rankin himself if he was an actor would look like rebus!!!

That’s the beauty of books, every person has their own idea of the main character lol
