I'm pretty sure a lot of the local businesses will be welcoming tourists with open arms .

There are limited public toilets and things open.

There is Raigmore and some small hospitals.

The area has had very few Covid cases, one county has had none so you can see why the locals are hesitant that there will be influx of people.

Exactly. I can't get my head round why people don't understand this. I love the Highlands and most years I will venture up for a few breaks. I'm going to leave it this year until the risk is minimal, I wouldn't want to risk creating an issue in an area with limited resources to deal with it.

I would agree with the fact that a lot of locals will be worried but I would also point to the fact that the majority of the small villages in the highlands rely on the tourist season to survive.

If everyone waits until next year to come back you may find nothing left. Just a thought

As a campervan owner I'm torn....I want to get out there and explore - find some calm in the madness - but don't want to put local resources and people at risk. If I do go I'll be self sufficient and only away for 3/4 days at a time to minimise interactions

As most campsites are still closed, where are these campervans going to dump their toilets?

Even when they were open a significant number of them just dumped their chemical toilets by the side of the road.

Aviemore is ram packed but as mentioned local businesses need the boost

As long as rules are followed what's the issue

We've already had a couple of local businesses close indefinitely due to loss of earnings

So come along just don't be wombats

I agree. If everyone sticks to sensible measures and not over crowding then whats the harm. Saying don't come back to next yeear means you anticipate that covid will have magically disappeared by then which although would be nice I find unlikely. And even if a vaccine is approved by then, it will only be given to people at higher risk I would imagine

I think the notion that campervans dump their shit and rubbish everywhere is overplayed tbh.

However the fact that it happens at all even rarely is case in point that we need to build infrastructure in the Highlands for campers like the French aires, where you can deposit rubbish and toilet waste and fill up with water for a small fee. Local Highland communities should be all over this if they want sustainable visitor behaviour.

What about us locals that have shielded for months, online shopped, seen nobody, been stuck at home looking at the same boring walls, getting stressed by home schooling and dealing with emotional outbursts of a bored kid who can't see her dad or friends.

Are we not allowed to travel in our little self contained home from home. We have every thing we need and impact on nobody but surely need a peaceful fresh air break

Local Campsite charges £5 to dump chemical toilet but still many don't bother, they just do it by the roadside.

And the wild campers, where do they dump? Wherever they bare their arse.

It’s a balancing act. If tourism doesn’t get back then much of the businesses are at risk of going down the pan.

On the other hand I can see why locals who have had minimal exposure risk being worried about it

Yesterday’s roads were very busy , lots of campers. I suppose if they are self contained then they SHOULDNT impact on locals and services if planned well enough !

But ..........

double edged sword certainly , what if they crash , what if they break down..... both these can be used at any time of the year, locals do indeed need business,

But.............

Dont see a problem myself, campervan users can be quite self sufficient. If they need to interact with other people for supplies they will just do what the locals do and mask up in shops and Im sure local businesses will welcome the extra trade.

Also you'll probably find that the campervans are actual campervan owners and not renters as most rental places are still closed so they'll stick to their campers rather than the part time novelties

Nairn is bouncing at the moment .all car parks on sea front full .campervans galore and local buisness profiting it Good to see at last and yes it a risk opening up to holiday makers but in my honest opinion it a risk needed to save this holiday town
