Getting rid of the lockdown physique?

Mr Pf here. I’ve decided that enough is enough and I better get ready for a return to work next month.

Thinking of getting back out on the bike and hammering it as much as I can.

Anyone any ideas on an acceptable starting point for distance to aim for. I’m thinking of ten miles per day to start with, but also wondering if that’s enough.

10 miles per day is a good start! All depends upon terrain, if relatively flat road cycling then 10 miles may be fairly easy, up in by a few miles every week once your body gets used to it.

10miles is a good start, will be about an hours cycle

If you haven't been out on bike in ages, I'd suggest to a short ride of 2 or 3 miles just to get a feel for the bike and see if there is anything that needs checked or adjusted, test brakes, test gears, see if thst flat is actually a puncture

Better to get the niggles sorted close to home than further away

Also have a look at the british cycling and lets ride webpages for short videos on things like checks on bike, returning to cycling, starting road cycling etc

Other wee things to consider

Puncture repair kit and tool

Hydration

Helmet?

Saddle at right height?

Have fun, keep pedalling

Ps im gonna be doing the same, ive been lazy past 2 to 3 weeks and i need to get back at it

Planking starting again tomorrow and going out walks as often as I can, I haven’t actually put weight on I’ve lost weight and shape hasn’t changed much so it’s more about feeling better than anything for me

We have been cycling most days on the turbo trainer and using Zwift app. Trying to keep off the lockdown eating bulges. Hopefully soon get to travel further for outdoor activities

Funny enough, Mrs Pf said that exact phrase to me this morning!

I walk the dog a good distance so legs are ok. It’s the gut from overeating and (mainly) alcohol I need to address! Was out walking/running this morning and need to dig the pushbike out the garage. No easy solution unfortunately!!

While I like a good ride (on a bike), if I'm honest, it's running which gets rid of weight.

I did c25k a couple of years back, I now do 5-8k 3 or 4 times a week. I can see when my running mileage goes up, the weight comes off...

I'd love to be able to run. Used to do the 100m and 200m for school but could never run any distance. Always end up with a sore back. Mr and friends who run always talk about it clearing the mind too.

Do try it, but off-road.

I find tarmac runs are a pain in the knee, thigh and hips...

Off-road (or at least some of a run) just seems easier on my joints, it also uses more of my body to balance.

Also, make sure you've really bouncy/accomodating sole trainers. I had a pair of Adidas which felt ace in the shop, but they were too soft and I was 'thumping' my heels lots.

C25k also builds you up gently, so even if you are fit, your body gets used to things and builds strength.

Finally, I have a wee post run our bike yoga stretch and that really helps.

The biggest thing anyone can do to change the lockdown physique is looking at calories in versus calories out.

If you can get your calories lower (even 200 calories) you'll be in a deficit and your body will start to loose weight. If you add any sort of cardio it will then increase your calorie burn.

If you don't tackle the calories along side the excercising you won't get far... Eating 3000 calories and then only excercising 200-300 calories (20 min run say) you'd still be in a calorie surplus (2500 for a guy).

You can do a bunch of things at home but find something you enjoy doing

Trying to get rid of my physique too, but struggling, mentally I can’t be bothered but know I have to make an effort, and physically I struggle to do the longer running distances I did before. Trying to get a bike at the moment but is impossible, as they are always out of stock because of the surge in demand.

I keep on getting emails from my old gym telling me about new post lockdown offers

Got so fed up with it I sent back a reply saying

“Thanks for the offers but I have decided to stay fat”

You can do plenty of bodyweight exercises that will burn as much as a longer bike ride. Something as simple as a 30min emom (every minute on the minute) 8 air squats & 8 burpees and rest in the remaining time.

Depending on you're level of fitness drop the reps down to 5&5 or up the interval time to 1 min 30 sec as long as you get about a 30 sec rest

Stick at it - the first week is ok, middle two or three tough, suddenly it's like 'oooh, check me, I'm running!'.... Let us know how you get on.

Yes it does. I first started running at age 49.

I think it would take more than cycling for me.

I need lipo suction, tummy tuck and my jaws wired.

And I haven't even had the excuse of not being at work!
