"Without getting into specifics (and definitely not conspiracy theories) does anyone else get the feeling there is stuff going on in the world that is being ignored. I really don't like the noises and actions of Russia for example. " Russia is actually a bit quiet because Putin said that there's no problem with Coronavirus, but it seems to have arrived. His position is based on looking strong, but his military spending and projection of power abroad will not compensate for Russians dying due to incompetence. At the same time Saudi Arabia has crashed the price of oil. Thus could permanently shut down companies in the USA and Russia. Russian oil on particular is expensive and a shut down would make large areas uneconomic to reopen, especially with the transition to renewables reducing energy costs. The US just dropped it's vehicle emissions standards to "improve pollution levels" ![]()

Many were killed the last time the oil price was pulled down. Together with an economic downturn making borrowing harder this will kill off another tranche. Like any leader who cannot deliver at home for their population, Putin finds an external threat to demonstrate his power against. What do warships or aeroplanes travelling near the UK actually achieve? It's just a dog pissing on a lamp post.

Russia has passed tough new laws including prison terms for breaking quarantine rules after a surge in Coronavirus infections. (news last night)

They've been functioning without leaks for several years. Never worked as a plumber. That's not to say that working in an industry doesn't give you greater insight, bit it can also blind you. I merely point d you towards information that you have been unable to refute. Incidentally, you have not really contributed to answering the OPs question. You seem to want to discredit me. That's fine but rather discourteous to the original author. If you hadn't noticed we are in a pandemic driven global recession. The USA cannot rely on its other industries anymore than anyone else can. You have essentially said that a company is in a good situation when it has no income and a competitor is selling its product into its market. Is that correct? A company makes money by producing and selling a product at as high a price as possible. Selling a product at a low price is not a "win". Selling a product at a loss is not a "win". Furloughing or sacking staff is not usually considered a "win". The cost of maintainig a facility making no money and restarting it is higher than keeping it in continuous production. This is not a "win". Now, are you planning to address the OP or just try to go after me again?

What's your theory? You haven't really mentioned US oil policy. I wasn't talking about it either. I've covered the logic of why not making money is not a win/win. I have also indicated why shale oil and stripper well companies will fail. This thread is speculative. That's rather the point.

You know that the US has the world's 11th highest reserves. Venezuela and Saudi each have about 300 billion barrells compared to about 40 billion for the US. The energy market is also shifting decisively away from fossil fuels. So you meant "other" oil companies would stay open then? Not the ones that will go bankrupt ![]() ![]()

Was the US hoping that other countries would "use up" their oil reserves that were many multiples of theirs only until 2016? How's that relevant to the current discussion then? They want to piss the Russians off because what happened in 2016? ![]() ![]() ![]()
