Ruling by decree with no time limit.

For nothing. He has fans on here. Trump's ones seem to have gone into hiding. How about Victor's?

My Brothers wife is Hungarian. He seems very popular.

I do wonder going off topic a little. If Covid 19 goes out of control in America and what with it being an election year how that will leave the election process and whether Trump could try to do something similar?

The constitution states that the term of office ends at midnight on 20th Jan 2021.

Federal Law states the General Election has to be the Tuesday following the first Monday in November.

To change that law requires a 2/3 majority in both Houses....not gonna happen given Dems want him out and hold power in Congress and Reps want him in and hold only a tiny Senate majority

Therefore no matter what shitshow the primaries are in the election will happen.

This thread went of track very quickly.

The question is, regardless of popularity, is a President being given powers to rule by decree indefinitely defencible?

The people may think that he's great. Right up until they think that he isn't. Then what?

Mugabe, Stalin, Hitler. They were all wildly popular at one point.

So, I'm just interested in someone arguing why this is a good thing and why he would legitimately ask for this.

Any takers?

So why post if you do not wish to address the question?

Why not set up your own thread?

Well to be honest your thread was getting a bit lonely so thought i would drum up some interest and if i had started a thread about what the eu is going to do about victor i would have all those eu fanatics on here jumping down my throat saying i want to see the eu fail.Hope that answers your question.

No. This is just an excuse for being impolite and a pretext to insulte. Nice

There's a thread now to explain why you don't have the courtesy to address the question in a thread before changing the subject

You haven't said anything here about if you think Orban's actions are defensible.

You have said that you're too scared to post any of your own threads in case you get trolled, yet here you are doing just that.

This does address a wider point. Quite fundamental really. However, it starts with finding out if those who support Orban can explain why what he is doing is okay.

“Dictatorships and authoritarian societies often start in the face of a threat,” Joseph Cannataci, the UN special rapporteur on the right to privacy told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/coronavirus-lockdown-surveillance-tracking-dictatorship-authoritarian-united-nations-privacy-a9438561.html

Lord Sumption made a similar point:

'"The police have no power to enforce ministers' preferences but only legal regulations which don't go anything like as far as the government's guidance," he said.

"This is what a police state is like. It's a state in which the government can issue orders or express preferences with no legal authority and the police will enforce ministers' wishes.'

I think hin had salvini are the best leaders in Europe. Salvini will regain power next election.

Orban has zero terror attacks , protects his people and salvini was doing a great job against these far left NGO open borders lunatics.

I hope so. Followed by Poland then others. This virus has showed the world how dangerous globalism is. With a bit of luck the EU's collapse is nearer. They are inept.

Luxembourg had zero terror attacks. Portugal too. Estonia, Holland, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Romania, Austria, Denmark, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Lithuania, Malta, Slovenia, Poland, Slovakia.

Now, if we can get on point you can explain why rule by decree meaning having dictatorial powers, for an unlimited period is justifiable.

That’s interesting why those countries had no terrorist attacks. I’m wondering why that is?

Could we get one or two direct answers to the topic before we head off two far?

Interesting question though and worth a thread of its own.

I'm certainly not a fan. In fact, I'm very concerned about this development.

Travellers and gypsies have already been targeted by not giving them equal education, housing and employment rights. Human rights organisations have been concerned about Hungary for years.

People on this forum may think, "well, it's only gypsies and travellers." Gypsies and travellers have rights too.

It's a path I worry about. For me, as a black person, this section of the community is the canary in the coal mine. If they are persecuted under the premise of 'who cares they are only gypsies', perpetrators will get away with this unnoticed. If they get away with this, then who is the next section in society who will be persecuted?

Sigh...

We never learn from history, do we?

I don't think we do. At some point blaming the "other" for all our problems is the easiest thing to do. People choose to believe the lies and act on it.

Look what neighbours did to each other in Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

He doesn't protect his people though. He's selective in who he agrees are granted the essential recognised human rights in his country, as an example. A leader who excludes citizens from having fundamental human rights is certainly not protecting his citizens. He's another populist leader who's mode of action is to stir hatred and vilify, which is not the stance of a peacemaker. To have the absolute right enshrined in law to govern until he decides not to, when someone does not recognise the equality and human rights of all of his people, is beyond obscene.
