We're currently two weeks behind Italy in the number of cases. If measures were in place now, we could avoid being where Italy is now. Sadly, I fear that this shithouse Tory government is all for letting people die. Natural selection.

Watching too. Here is what they said:

1. Dont call 111 when you have symptoms _( wait till your seriously fucked and it's too late)

2. Stay 7 days at home if you feel feverish ( all the world says 14 days)

3. It's too early to cut elderly from social contact because it will cause them to feel lonely ???? ( it's best to kill them with virus )

And of course Boris word : wash your hands

I mean c'mon....this government is clearly planning to get rid of pension payments (maybe more)

Obviously this person has consulted many experts and studied the pandemic in depth and is using scientific statistics to lead them to this conclusion. I'm also positive they must have several degrees in medical sciences.

So the UK - Conservative govt - is trying to get rid of its largest voting base? 67% of over-70s who voted in the last GE voted Conservative (per You Gov stats).

I think the government is being very laid back, not sure about the theories about killing the population off.. But, in comparison to other countries it's a very laid back approach.. Better to bat this off early than let it gradually get worse.. As in lock the public into the country and don't allow anyone in at all.. Then it's completely solely UK based and then a faster result of it stopping.. Just my thoughts

What you dont know or you dont want to see, is the situation in Italy now is dramatic....France will join in just a week . Despite all that, the UK is just watching....note that you dont have genuis brains in the government, these are ready protocols that all countries have in place. There are certainly a lot more scientific experts on here than I thought!

Not sure this is really a tool to bash the government with. Also not sure what people are expecting them to do. Italy can't shut the country down forever and when they inevitably have to open back up (because people have no wages to buy food etc) they will see another surge on the infection rate.

Maybe we should all just pull in one direction for a change?

I think we have to forego a shoter-term hit on the economy, by restricting people now as much as possible. It would reduce the volume of contact with people and subdue its expansion. The Chinese have limited its spiralling growth, after draconian measures. We're used to our iberties but at a point where deaths could rocket, it's a price worth paying.

You people really need to get a grip. Unless everyone is banned from moving it will spread. If we stop people moving the economy dies. When the economy dies, more people die. Quite simple the government is asking you to do what you can to help yourselves and your loved ones. This virus is not under the control of any government and it’s happened time and time again over history. Whittling the numbers down will not harm the human race. We will still be over populated.

What do people think they want? A ban on everyone doing anything. It has been shown that the knock on effect of unintended consequences could see more deaths than the virus. Just one example, think of some people’s Christmas when they’re cooped up with relatives. The murder rate soars.

If you seal everywhere off, you get leaks and leaks you don’t know about or can control are more insidious than a gush that you can.

Prohibition in the 1930s: didn’t work

The war on drugs: hasn’t worked

Stopping all migrants being smuggled into the country: hasn’t worked.

This is as much about human psychology as it is about a virus. Look at the toilet roll debacle for evidence of how people react.

I do think in one way, let’s get it done and over with, yet it’s the weak and elderly which will then be more vulnerable if we were not to put precautionary measures, which is unfair.

Boris Johnson in a tv interview said "Perhaps you could, sort of, take it on the chin, take it all in one go and allow the disease, as it were, to move through the population, without really taking as many Draconian measures."

Journalist Jeremy Warner believes the virus is beneficial to the economy if the virus kills off the elderly population.

Many of the conservatives feel the same way they don't care as long as they don't have to pay state pensions.

It's a sad place to be with conservatives in power but hey ho that's what we got.

Government won't do anything other than drastic measures if it's going to effect them. Who regrets voting for them?

"Can't agree more ...what the f... do u want the government to do ...10x worse than italy ...no fear factor there then....don't panic don't panic Mr Johnson....the fab experts have got it covered"

Italy's government weeks ago declared anyone who self isolates will have utilities paid for them. They are covering costs so they can reduce the issue of not going to work. UK won't do that, tough shit if you can't afford to isolate best go work, they've already said poorer workers need to work more hours to cover shortfall over brexit.

Other countries are putting restrictions on travel UK isn't. It's ok for the richer folk, Boris wants the UK culled of people on benefits that includes people of the working poor getting benefits, people who are sick, people who are old.

The working poor won't survive the outbreak whether they are sick or not. Starve, lose their homes, lose their job because working poor don't have safety nets in terms of savings, insurance and equity.

The working poor when they close the schools will still have to work so then who is paying childcare costs? Government even if they will won't see a penny for at least 6 weeks. So what then?

The government needs to have a plan and well they do its called "fuck you Britain" the richer folk can afford to stay home and isolate, they can afford not to starve without going to work the divide in Britain is the poor vs the rich. A lot of the middle-class are in jobs which allow them to work from home so they will be just fine.

So the government should be doing more... they just won't.

"Made me laugh when it was said that if you don’t feel well then you should stay at home for 7 days but they will not be testing you for convid-19 but you are expected to lose a weeks pay just in case

They really do live in a different world don’t they

When you say it made you laugh - does that mean you wouldn’t do it? Mr.

Like a lot of people I cannot afford not to work especially if I only had a bad cold

Because, presumably, you’re more important than anyone else? No-one has immunity. No-one. This requires people to have a wider societal responsibility to make it work. You are somehow exempt from this? Mr. "

The point is how do you expect someone to isolate when they can't afford to. Other governments are supporting the public, our government doesn't care.

We're back to the Victorian era, it's the poor peoples fault. They spread the diseases, they expect help the cheek of it!?! (because they get paid pittance why the people they bust their asses working for those above them to sit on profits made on the backs of the poor)

Government needs to get off its fat coffers and support the people who need support. At the end of this pandemic guess where the finger of blame will point. If millions of Britons die they will blame all the people who had no realistic choices. It's work and spread the virus or lose everything because no one else is going to help you.

This virus will not be stopped now, we have to try and control its spread, the time to take dramatic action will be in a few weeks time to lower infection rates to allow public services to cope. Herd immunity has to be built up, either by a vaccine or gradual exposure, the government is following the best advice the UK has, if you want to avoid the virus lock yourself away until you can get a vaccination,

The difference is these experts are working with known facts on how dealing with these things have worked, the brexit experts were making predictions, many of which were designed to influence votes, very few came true.

I just dont get where you the idea from that we can get rid of this virus, we CANT we will all be exposed at some point, the plan is very clear, let it spread slowly by letting human nature take its course, ie some will carry on as normal, some will go into panic mode and block up their front door to keep it out, when a certain number are assumed to have it and it's about to overwhelm services clamp down hard on movements, then after numbers drop allow them to build up perhaps a second clampdown may be needed before natural immunity is high enough to allow life to return to normal. Some of us will die from it, just as we fuel from flu, cancer drug and drink misuse etc etc.

They are following the WHO plan, which is to deal with it in set stages, I really wonder about people who believe it can be stopped, it cant, the numbers who have contacted it are far bigger then official numbers, 125,000 out of all the billions on this planet, yet members of the uk, German, french, eu, and now Canada's government have caught, the chances of them being in the 125,000 are so small that you would be more likely to win the lottery twice, most people hardly notice they have it. Try looking up the wto report from China for some real facts

I know these facts. I am not saying that we can stop the virus but we can certainly do a lot more to reduce the spread. I'm just saying that the government should take more drastic measures. Above all, give more support to people who need to stay home because of suspected infection or who are already infected.

The trouble with italy and spain is they did not listen to the governments from the start. Its in their culture to kiss each other on the cheek when they meet the easiest way to pass it on, they both have a high % of smokers which means your hands are going to your face more regularly another thing we are advised not to do.Italy when they discovered the epicentre of the virus leaked that they were going to lock down the next day so 1000,s of people left for other parts of the country before it happened spreading the virus even further.

People are fundamentally selfish. If they listen to the advice the curve will be flattened.

This won’t happen people will not want to undergo hardship for multiple reasons good or bad.

But the advice about washing your hands frequently is crucial. It will protect your and others from spreading.

Seeing the sporting stars testing positive all over the show in my opinion. Should mean the postponing of all sporting/public events.

Limit travel as well.

The Schools is a tough one because of the impact on parents.

Do you not understand that the healthy people in the population need to catch the virus to build up an immunity to it? its only the vulnerable that need protection. If as you suggest we shut the whole country down hibernate and hope it goes away it will only delay the inevitable because the virus will always be about now.Next year the world would have built up an immunity and we would still be at risk, you cannot escape this its here and thats the facts.

Are you watching bbc breakfast just been a professor on saying exactly the same thing people need to catch it but at a slow rate not all at once thats why they are trying to flatten the curve.Shutting everything up will not stop the virus what part of that do you not understand? if you are vulnerable dont go to a football match or the cinema.China may say they have stopped the spread thats because they have stopped movement are they going to be on shutdown for years? i dont think so and as soon as one person who has it is allowed to move again it will spread again.Taking personal responsibility not to spread it is the only way.you lock yourself in the cupboard and put your fingers in your ears mate i shall carry on living.

All schools , colleges and universities should be closed. All sporting and attended events should be cancelled, people should be encouraged where possible to work from home. Boris is acting just like Trump they are only interested in the economy and couldn’t give a shit about the people , especially those that no longer pay tax.

Are you being serious? Are you suggesting that we need people to catch the virus? Where is the evidence to suggest that we will ‘build up an immunity to it’ ? Of course i am thats how your body works, years ago people died of a common cold.

No they didn’t, they may have died from flu, but we now have anti biotics and other medicines. Your living in a dream world if you think people catching the virus is a good idea,

My God while I often disagree with your views I thought you were an intelligent person with a different opinion, you have destroyed that myth with this, at least 90% of us will catch this virus during our life time just as we do with flu, when we do we are immune from that strain, flu mutated so we get a different strain but generally not so badly, the same with cold, when enough of us have had this new one we will have what's called herd immunity which will slow its spread, what the government is doing is controlling the spread rate to allow the services to cope who become seriously ill, most wont know they have even had it.

90% of the world will catch the virus? Are you being serious? How has China managed to prevent the spread ? Why are they trying to stop the virus spreading? Why has Italy gone into lock down? "

Its in lockdown to SLOW it down thats the idea of flattening the curve its not going to stop it the W h O already know thats impossible.

It's true that healthy people need to catch it to build up an immunity to it which in turn will protect the vulnerable by way of herd immunity. That's how these things work.

One thing is for certain and that this virus is killing people especially the old and those with underlying health problems.

But also it's not going to discriminate who it takes, if it finds a weakness in a host it will exploit it, somebody could be in thier twenties thirties or whatever age, healthy, fit, but if it finds a weakness they are going to suffer or maybe worse these morality figures although sad will mean nothing once someone you know dies.

"That’s right, you carry on living? Never-mind those who will die from this, don’t worry about them , take it on the chin , yeah ? "

I’ll start by saying that I am no fan of Boris.

The point he was making though, was that it is inevitable that more people will die. Even with lockdown in China, the virus continued to infect and a lot of that may have been because (like the leaking pipe analogy I used earlier in this thread) people still come into contact or travel even with the consequences under a totalitarian government.

Italy was the same “we’re closing everywhere....tomorrow” so people ran.

Sometimes the consequences of what seem like a good idea can be more serious than the first action. Here’s another wee tale to illustrate that:

After the Titanic sank, it was mandated that all ships had to have more life boats. That was alright for those new ones being built but it also applied to older boats. They were retro fitted with extra life boats. One boat based in Chicago, became so unbalanced by the extra weight so high up, that it capsized with a higher death toll than the Titanic.

The point is, most people think that disruption to the economy only affects the rich and those with shares. In truth, it’s those the worst off who suffer and more deaths happen during a recession.

Why have China and Italy gone into lock down? The OP is all about the governments response to the crisis? And I still maintain it has been woeful, how many people need to die and catch the virus before they change their approach ?

Why do you think vaccines are used ? Its used to create herd immunity but with an inert virus, we cant do that yet, we cant stop it spreading, we can try and slow the rate of infection so health services can cope, there is simply no other way, yes some are going to die as they do from flu, it's very sad but there is no choice.

If you are that bothered about the government response I suggest getting a few beers in or a bottle of wine instead this weekend, putting your feet up, watch a bit of box sets and have at least 2 more days on this planet without covid-19 LOL in my system.

That's what I intend to do.

The current death rate is 1.4% in the UK which is significantly lower than Italy. That 0.6 percent may seem like I’m being pedantic but if you’re talking about the UK in a thread about the UK, getting the facts is important before comparing responses in other countries

This virus is a bit like the analogy of when the masks drop down during an emergency on an aeroplane. First of all put your own mask on before you try looking after someone elses's mask as if you drop dead then you are no good to them anyway are you ?

Survive and then help put the masks on those that need help.

I’m not saying there is a number of deaths I find acceptable before becoming scared. One death is one too many but it’s really not as simple as that.

Do you drive a car, use planes trains or buses?

Globally (I couldn’t find a UK specific breakdown) air pollution caused in large part by vehicles, kills between 4 and 8 million people a year.

Have the government stopped everyone from driving? No. Apart from the economic impact, if we were all told tomorrow that our cars were going to be crushed to save people’s lives, then there would be civil unrest

This thread is about the governments response. No, the country can’t shut down, but schools , colleges, universities should all be closed, sporting events should be banned, they should be helping people and business of those who can’t work or need to be off to look after children or the elderly . There should be emergency funds available , more testing kits, it is becoming a state of emergency and the government are doing nothing .

Right, so it doesn’t matter because more people die because of air pollution? Air pollution is a problem that can be solved over time , This virus could kill 100 million people world wide in less than a year . It seems some people will only care when someone they know sadly dies

Right so it doesn’t matter if...the people who die every year have less value than your right to travel, use electricity, consume factory produced goods? A lot of these same people who are now in the most vulnerable category after contracting respiratory conditions?

The people die over time affected by pollution and you rightly say that measures are being introduced to stem that. But surely if it is such a big issue we need to act now?

And please stop saying that people don’t care about deaths. Very few on this, and the other threads, have said they don’t care.

If the Coronavirus isn’t stopped it will kill tens of millions in the next 12 months, comparing it with air pollution, cancer, suicides , heart disease and other mass killers is pointless at this stage I have stated quite clearly my opinion on the governments response to the ongoing crisis , time well soon tell on wether they were right or not . I hope for the sake of us all they are proven correct . I have just heard that the EFL and the premier league have suspended all football until April, a decision that seems to go against the advice of the government. I am hoping they make the correct decision to close down all educationally facilities today

I respect your view that you don’t think the UK government have (yet) done enough to control spread.

What you haven’t acknowledged is that a large number of the people who will die are in that position of being more vulnerable because of factors I’ve already mentioned.

The government have not told sports authorities they aren’t allowed to cancel things.

You want all schools and colleges to shut down completely. What about those parents who are front line in this? Australia has not closed things completely, the 14% or so of pupils whose parents are in front line professions and those who cannot through other reasons are still attending classes. So does that make the lives of the teachers, police, doctors less valued? No. It’s proportionate.

Proportionate maybe sounds like a cold uncaring word to use but without it, we would be in anarchy.

We don’t do as we are told like in China. Just look at this thread. Everyone thinks they have the answer- just look at this thread. If we are told we can’t do something, we complain, we rebel. And if everyone just did what they thought they should do, then we’re into more, up to now, fictional territory.

Well in short the government's strategy appears to be for this to become endemic, which after the initial 'cull' (for want of a better phrase) will then see this become another form of seasonal flu which will have a similar death rate. To do this 60% of the population to contract it to provide herd immunity, which is basically committing to around 400 - 800k deaths

I am hoping they make the correct decision to close down all educationally facilities today "

How do you intend stopping it? its impossible so you lock down the country for six months no flights nothing no one working we all end up in poverty after 6 months reopen the boarder the 1st person from outside who still has it infects everyone back to aquare one.You talk as if this can be stopped it cant and if it learns to mutate like the flu virus we will live with it for generations. The genie is out the bottle mate and bankrupting the country wont help one bit.

Ok, 1.4% of 90 % of the UKs population is 834,000 deaths? Scary enough for you ?

I’m not saying there is a number of deaths I find acceptable before becoming scared. One death is one too many but it’s really not as simple as that.

Do you drive a car, use planes trains or buses?

"Well in short the government's strategy appears to be for this to become endemic, which after the initial 'cull' (for want of a better phrase) will then see this become another form of seasonal flu which will have a similar death rate. To do this 60% of the population to contract it to provide herd immunity, which is basically committing to around 400 - 800k deaths "

Yet other countries are adopting a different response? If we continue with this approach we will find ourselves isolated from the rest of the world,

Grantham

I'm quite happy to take advice from Sir Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance. They are using all the facilities and knowledge of the medical and scientific community, and in their words we must trust.

To try and say that there is a right way, or a wrong way, to treat this is absurd. We are going on what seems best for the UK at the present time. Others may well do it differently, dependent on their circumstances.

They are bothering so to slow the infection rate down it doesnt stop it they dont want to many people ill at the same time, it seems most people will contract it sooner or later. The uk gov will probably bring in similar measures in a week or two.

It can be stopped? I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and take that to mean that the speed of spread can be slowed.

We are not other countries. A decade or more ago, it was thought that 24 hour drinking laws would reduce binge drinking in the UK. It didn’t really work did it. You simply cannot compare one country’s plan to another as different countries have different health services, different economic systems and different attitudes

Why not now? Why wait? Why have the premier league and EFL cancelled all matches? Seems pointless as we will all get the virus? Why have other sporting events been cancelled? Why are they ignoring government ‘advice’? Your adulation for Boris is clouding your judgement on this one .

It would appear that my comparisons are pointless, as you cannot and will not acknowledge that what we do in the UK is not necessarily something which translates across other countries. I do rather think that you’ve made more of a fool of yourself with (at last count) 5 factual inaccuracies in this thread, which when challenged in a rational manner by others have either backtracked, or peddled the same blinkered inability to conduct a rational debate.

Why don’t we take advice from China and Italy? Even though they were to slow to act as they were the first to experience this , if we follow what they are doing now we can slow and halt the spread. Maybe I am completely wrong, and the current response will work, I do hope it does

Well there’s even more in the last few posts but I’ll let the lurkers do a count in their heads. If I did list them, you probably wouldn’t accept them as things you said and, again in a debate, people need to remember what they have said earlier in a debate, or it will come back at them

You simply cannot compare one country’s plan to another as different countries have different health services, different economic systems and different attitudes

Are you now comparing the Coronavirus with 24 hour drinking? Dear god, you are losing it mate. Stop with the pointless comparisons you are making a fool of yourself .This virus spreads in exactly the same way irrespective of the country it is in. I guess you are happy with the government’s response? I honestly hope you and they have got it right

5 factual inaccuracies ? Care to list them ?

Well there’s even more in the last few posts but I’ll let the lurkers do a count in their heads. If I did list them, you probably wouldn’t accept them as things you said and, again in a debate, people need to remember what they have said earlier in a debate, or it will come back at them"

Just a quick list will suffice,

" Why have the premier league and EFL cancelled all matches? "

Matches are cancelled to protect the players, who are now coming down with the virus. It won't take many players to get the virus before matches couldn't be played anyway.

" Of course it can be stopped, when someone gets flu does everybody in the country get it? "

A large percentage of the population is already immune to the 'flu'. No-one is yet immune to covid-19.

No one is immune to flu, no one is immune to a cold either, have you ever had a cold? Have you ever had flu? I know I have , several times

You do know it’s not the same strain? That’s why you catch “the cold” so often.

Oh dear

"I'm quite happy to take advice from Sir Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance. They are using all the facilities and knowledge of the medical and scientific community, and in their words we must trust.

To try and say that there is a right way, or a wrong way, to treat this is absurd. We are going on what seems best for the UK at the present time. Others may well do it differently, dependent on their circumstances. "

So they are at the top of their tree over here, but the rest of Europe and infact the world have taken a totally different approach to this.

Just look at Thailand and Taiwan which are right next door to china, 59 cases Thailand and 49 cases Taiwan.

They adopted a totally different attitude to us and banned mass gatherings from the beginning and heaven forbid...they used masks as well as washing their hands for 20 seconds.

I think I got the feel of this when boris opened the announcement yesterday saying he wants to be straight in the fact that we will lose many loved ones early!

Call me a sceptic if you want but I think our government is welcoming the reductions in paying out on pensions.

Around 50 percent of colds are caused by rhinoviruses I am struggling to work out why we aren’t immune to this?

It's common knowledge that once you have had a particular strain of flu or particular strain of cold, both caused by virus, you become immune to that particular strain. That is why as you get older you tend not to suffer from either as much. Also a meaningful percentage of the population is annually vaccinated against the upcoming strain of flu for that year.

Yet the common cold still has the ability to mutate and change strains? Would it be fair to say that Covid 19 could mutate and change ? I hope it can’t

It certainly could mutate, and into a more virulent deadly form, just like the Spanish flu did in 1918 which killed more than 50 million people worldwide.
