Would they have made a caricature of a non Asian to look like a "sacred cow"? I doubt it.

A sacred cow? I doubt they would insult a religion that believes cows are sacred in this way.

Could you provide the link in question.

Aa long as it's a news link then it will be accepted by the forum mods.

Thanks

If it’s true let’s remember. It shows an alarming lack of foresight by a paper that champions inclusivity.

I think if true it’s nasty. Not personally offensive to me but potentially very inflammatory to the Hindu community.

It takes a person " journalist " typing away in a fleet street office to create what ever the newspapers editors want to print and publish. And thus creating what the nation talks about the following day or days.

So why do we all say " have you read this in the paper "

When it is usually one persons opinion - we all have different opinions. ?

We should have a fact based newspaper, We have one or two that do that ?

I can honestly say that I've encountered more racism on here from posters on here who have indicated a left wing bias than those on the right. When I call them out on it they have responded by sending offensive PMs telling me how all their black friends don't think they're racist and that I, as a black person, am wrong. I questioned one "right wing" self-identified person and I received a PM with an apology and a well-reasoned explanation. I have found in life that bare are basically two types of racists. "Honest" racists will shout slurs in the street. These are easy to deal with by ignoring them and carrying on walking. Then there are the "ignorant" racists who are just totally unaware how deep their racism is ingrained. These are the ones who, without fail on this site, identify as "left-wingers".

Very much so. She is of Indian heritage, and she is portrayed with a ring through her nose which is traditionally used in bulls' noses. The portrayal is both racist and sexist. Why the eye-roll? Are you assuming my response will be invalid for some reason?

Don't use emojis if you don't know what they mean.

Read what you wrote as that's how I got it as you asked.

I don't regard being labelled so quickly as smart by you. First rebuttal what I asked it wasn't a dig but you for some reason have reacted emotionally.

If you cannot be tempered in your response I suggest you reevaluate your usage of virtual forums such as these.

People claiming this place is racist are correct, but in this section it's mainly the older white audience who like to claim people are racist to them

The cartoon has racism designs, it shouldn't have been accepted.

No idea. But more importantly, is she offended?

Doesn't matter, these days people are offended on behalf of others.

I can't agree racism only exists in the mind of the weak. It is thankfully no where near as bad as it used to be, but it still exists for the uneducated or ignorant.

The issue, for me, is people cry racisism far too easily. This detracts attention away from real racism and fuels the fire of the racists.

Let’s be honest, you have never experienced racism, it is very easy and cowardly to tell people to ‘grow up and get on with life’ when you have never experienced what they have . For the record, I am a white man who lives in England who has never been the victim of racism but I would never tell a person who has ‘to man up, grow up, get on with life ‘ , because of the way I have been brought up and because I have compassion.

"I'm still waiting for someone to explain why it was racist "

There seems to be quite a lack of cultural empathy on this thread, but I will try to answer your question. It is about iconography. Many cultures and religions venerate symbols, whether they be script or pictures. Deliberate, or even unintended unimplied insult to those icons would be offensive to some of that culture. Are you offended by the swastika? Same thing. It's what it represents. What if the Chief Rabbi, or a leading Imam was portrayed as a pig? I'm sure you read about Charlie Hebdo in 2015 where 12 people were shot and killed as a result of the magazine printing a picture of Mohammed. Just a picture.

Whether Priti Patel is offended by this, I don't know. She is a British born British-Indian from a Hindu background. Whether she still adheres to her religion of birth, I don't, but much of her family probably still does. To use the image of a bovine to lampoon her seems either deliberate, or extremely ignorant. Whichever, it's culturally insensitive. It may also be racist, depending on which of the millions of definitions of racism you believe in.

It may also be racist, depending on which of the millions of definitions of racism you believe in."

Jews and Muslims see pigs as unclean whereas Hindus venerate cows, so it's not really the same is it?

Ultimately unless/until a Hindu person wants to come on here and give their perspective we're guessing as to whether offense is possible or not.

What we do know is that OP is just on the wind up as usual.

"I'm still waiting for someone to explain why it was racist

Well I'm not sure if she's Hindi or not (although I'm pretty sure she's not Muslim or Christian) but the cartoon is a clear reference to her (H)Indian ethnicity. What do you think it's referencing?

She's not a Hindu. Even if she was why would depicting her as bull be racist?

You seem well informed mate. Why don’t you explain why it’s not racist and how you know she’s not a Hindu?

You can put the thread to bed then.

Because I'm not making the assumption - the onus is on those making that claim

India's name comes from the word Hindi, as in Hindia - land of the Hindies. Whether intended or not the references to the Hindi "Sacred Cow" of India are there."

No there not, it's about the bullying, nothing more but people who live to Stoke up racial tension will most obviously fight and argue it has racist intentions

I thought the main point of this thread was to wonder why the OP has changed his usual pro-racism stance?

"I'm still waiting for someone to explain why it was racist

Are all foreign cultures a complete mystery to you? It's not whether the icon is good or bad, it's using it incorrectly that's the problem. The swastika was originally a symbol of divinity and spirituality in the Hindu religion, but it was taken by the Nazis, used incorrectly and now it's offensive to many. The British Tamil conservatives have said ‘This cartoon is offensive on every level. – It’s anti-Hindu. It portrays the Home Secretary, of Hindu origin as a cow. A sacred symbol for Hindus. – Its racist and – misogynist. It’s plainly unacceptable! It may constitute a hate crime.’

There are several hundred thousand of them. Is that enough for you to overcome your bigotry?

I'm not offended, outraged nor do I have my knickers in a twist about it. The question was asked whether people thought the cartoon was racist. I looked at it and answered the question yes. The question was then asked why people thought it might be racist so I answered that too. It seems to me that the people getting their collective knickers in a twist about this are those vehemently arguing that there's nothing racist here. Maybe they've been educated at the Jeremy Corbyn School of Cultural Sensitivity in Art as they seem to be showing very similar attitudes to his attitude towards a very racist mural.

Spot on, it’s very trendy to be offended these days about anything and everything. People really need to grow up. Sticks and stones, as the old adage went.

The OP is not remotely offended I can assure you

He does however seem to have a fetish for posting this kind of thread while he sits back to observe people falling over themselves to see which one of them can take the prize for being the least racist

They usually win this prize by inventing things to be offended about and then pointing the finger at anyone who isn't as equally offended as they are

I would probably find it mildly amusing if only it didnt detract so much from the real issues we should be worrying about

Priti Patel's grandparents were all Indians. They moved to Uganda in the 60s. So her family heritage is all Hindus. Whether she practices Hinduism is another question.

I am born in a Hindu family. I am not religious myself. But I can speak for Hinduism on this topic. As other people have mentioned here, cow is sacred for Hindus. Even most non-vegetarian Hindus don't eat beef. Except for a very small group of hardcore Hindutva fanatics/politicians, Hindus don't really take offense on cartoons about cows. Journalists in India often make cartoons about this stuff. I actually find the Hindus to be much more mature in this aspect.

The guardian cartoon doesn't seem to be focused on her Hindu heritage. The message they are conveying is different. But knowingly or unknowingly, they made a big mistake here. Even if Hindus don't give a damn about it, politicians are using it well against them.

This is just my take on this specific matter. Otherwise, my opinion of the guardian is that it is just a piece of left wing crap that claims to be fighting for equality and justice but in truth they just try to appease "some sections" of society who they love more than others. Remember the Animal Farm line - All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.

I see that people are asking them to apologise. I would be surprised if they did. After all, it is not the "religion of peace" that shoots journalists for drawing cartoons.

Whoa - I am mixed race African-Asian. Are you saying that it would be impossible to be racist toward me because I am mixed race?
