I’m not one for conspiracy fantasies (Won’t use the word theory as that implies verifiable evidence)

But the advice being given out health authorities and government and the fact the health secretary has said that no options are off the table when it comes to dealing with the Coronavirus outbreak.

It seems there maybe more to this than being reported.... Zombie apocalypse???

I don’t remember the SARS or Bird flu outbreaks isolating Cruise ships, hotels, cities etc..... But then I am old.....

Though I’m sure some Brexiteers already believe it to be a dastardly EU plot to harmonise viruses....

Discuss......

It was first reported in Wuhan in December 2019. As the Chinese covered it up in the early days it is pretty obvious it has been around for longer. It is now March 2020. 23 cases in the UK. More people have died by champagne corks shot at them ffs. It’s just a slightly more contagious strain of flu. Flu.That mainly affects elderly people with pre existing conditions that has caused a run on masks, hand sanitizers , wipes, tissues, toilet rolls and Big Soup

For most people this Coronva virus will be less serious than a mild dose of the flu. However it is not flu and differs from it in a number of ways and this is why it is being treated quite differently.

The first way it is different from flu is that it's about two to three times more contagious than flu. The second way it's different from flu is that people with this virus can become contagious before they become symptomatic; in fact many people who get this virus may become contagious and never become symptomatic. The third way it's different from flu is that no one has any natural immunity to it as it's never been here before.

What we are not talking about here is a world apocalypse or Omega Man scenarios but we are talking about an infection that could, in a reasonable worse case scenario, potentially kill 500,000 people in the UK. The current effort is designed to slow the spread of the virus down. It can't and won't be stopped but, if it can be slowed down, then there is more chance of a vacination being developed before the virus hits its peak contagion and that could potentially save hundreds of vulnerable people from possible death.

The advice is to take precautions but don't panic.

Research from China finds it is 1000 times more infective than SRS and has an HIV-like mutation that helps it bind extremely effectively to human cells.

It may prove extremely difficult to make a vaccine for this.

Then let's hope and pray that it doesn't mutate into something far more dangerous. That would be the real nightmare scenario.

I am revising my opinion as to how major a death rate this will have. It is virulent and pretty much impossible to detect. The 2% mortality rate will still lead to millions of deaths as it will be global.

No doubt it is undetected in India and Africa right now where containment will be close to impossible.

All that you can do is wash your hands regularly and avoid big crowds.

Makes rush hour on the trains rather difficult though

Very good post.

With apologies to F D Roosevelt, I think the only thing to panic about is panic itself.

Over the weekend here in Germany you would have thought that WW 3 had just broken out.

In our local supermarkets, rice, pasta, sugar, flour, toilet rolls, and tinned anything was virtually unobtainable by Saturday afternoon.

Parking was nigh on impossible, the queue's at the tills were horrendous, and some could barely push the trolleys because they were so full.

Ditto on Cracken post..

The panic will spread probably much faster than the actual virus, irony possibly being that those thronging together could be opening themselves up to copping it..

Pretty glad I kept my noddy kit and respirator now, even if I can't remember if I bagged any spare canisters..

"It's a cold/flu ...yes that's all folks ...not a nuclear war"

It's a bit more than cold/flu for the reasons I gave in my previous post. On an individual bases, unless you're old or have an underlying condition, it's not something people should overly worry about but, if people don't take reasonable precautions, we could potentially face a situation where about 500,000 people die in the UK from this. But even those are not the real problem if this gets out of hand. The real problem and burden on the NHS is the potential 5,000,000 people who get seriously ill.

That is what they said in 1918! Spanish pandemic lasted until 1920, and in the 2 years 500 million people were infected or 27% of the world population! The amount of people who died is estimated at 40 -50 million, but hey it was only a cold!

That is very true but medical treatment wasnt anywhere near it is today and general health is better, it appears it is the older you are the more likely it is to become life threatening.

There is little we can do unless we live like hermits till it passes, if I get it and die then that's tough I've had a good life although would like more, but if I felt my kids and especially grandkids were at risk then it would be much more concerning for me

There is no "treatment" for a virus other than a vaccine.

We are 6-12 months out from that apparently.

It is not age specifically that is the issue. It's underlying medical conditions.

Don't be so silly.

It's far better than half the population goes into a massive panic, buys up all the tined and tried food they can and lock themselves away until it all blows other or there's no one left to catch it from. While the other half assume it's all much ado about nothing, take no reasonable precautions and just "carry on", spreading it to the week and vulnerable.

It's the British way.

There are plenty of anti viral medications available, just none specifically designed for this strain at the moment. There are 4 main ones for flu strains so it is highly likely one of these can be modified. It will take a little time, but it's already being worked on.

It's a funny coincidence that back in 2018 the BBC ran a short documentary theorizing how quickly a pandemic would spread throughout the uk,they showed it starting in Haslemere surrey which funnily enough is the exact same place where the corona virus was recorded to have first passed on from person to person.

There are treatments for viral infections but vaccines are not one of them....

Vaccines give, hopefully, some immunity however since this corona virus is sharing factors with HIV, a vaccine is not going to be soon or protect all that well.

"For most people this Coronva virus will be less serious than a mild dose of the flu.

"

Symptom's;

1; You catch what feels like a cold (sore throat, sniffles etc) 1 week, then it seems to clear up and your okay for a week

2; You then catch what feels like the flu (which knocks you for 6) then it seems to clear up and your okay for a week

3; You then catch Pneumonia and this strain of Pneumonia is what takes you out

By the time you catch symptom 3 you have already passed it on with 1 & 2.

Government Conservative minister says something vague or truly universally great is their plan. Standard for the clueless.

It's new, has no cure yet, and can be minimised as an overwhelming issue with soap and water hand washing.

"There are treatments for viral infections but vaccines are not one of them....

Vaccines give, hopefully, some immunity however since this corona virus is sharing factors with HIV, a vaccine is not going to be soon or protect all that well."

Coronavirus is definitely NOT acting in the same way as HIV. It is part of the strain of virus' linked to flu. Current treatment includes neuraminidase inhibitors to help prevent the replication of the virus to reduce duration and symptomatic response. Vaccines are being worked on at the moment based on the same technology that is used to produce annual flu vaccinations as these are strain specific.

I didn’t say it works in the same way, I said it (may) share factors with HIV. This appears to be related to the way it infects.

There are treatments for viruses but vaccines are not one of them: they are prophylactics ie, aim to limit degree of illness or provide 100% protection at best.

Linking this with HIV in any way simply serves to cause unnecessary concern and panic. I am also fully aware of what a vaccine does (given that I work with a company that makes them!), you prevent with them and treat with anti virals and retro virals. Vaccines are ultimately going to be the best way to deal with he infection as they will prevent it spreading. Once herd immunity is established, then the virus can be eliminated.

The reference to viruses being prophylactic was not for you.

If you know how HIV works, you’ll know how hard it is to produce a vaccine that will stimulate immunity. If the Chinese researchers are right with their findings, herd immunity will not be obtainable. Reduction in severity of morbidity will be best expectation.

Ah, it appears you don’t know what vaccines actually do. And there are no proven antiviral drugs for this corona virus, including ritonivir.

I don’t see any posts here saying corona virus is the same as human immunodeficiency virus. That the trialling antivirals are HIV drugs proves my point- they are linked, it is thought they infect cells in similar ways.

A vaccine is the only thing that will end this before everyone susceptible has died. It will prevent its continued growth in the population.

Anti-viral drugs have to be tailored to a virus just like a vaccine.

All that can really be done at the moment is symptomatic treatment and treatment of the underlying conditions which are exacerbated.

Sadly, vaccines will only be available to the First World eventually and even them, people will still die from complications of its infection. The Third World won’t have that luxury and so it’s always going to be present.

Humans are not invincible. We rely on modern medicine to make us live forever. It just doesn’t.

You linked HIV to coronavirus by stating that they "share factors" this is nonsense beyond the fact they are both virus'I have already said that they are developing a vaccine, not that one is being used to treat at the moment. I have explained that neuraminidase inhibitors are currently the best choice to slow it's replication in a body and to help minimise symptomatic responses. Stop trying to link it to HIV, this it daft at best and down right irresponsible at worst.

Hmm, I’d advise you to do some reading of scientific papers. You may not like the association but it is indeed a finding of research scientists in China, who have had the longest opportunity to study it.

To be pedantic, protease inhibitors, as used for HIV treatment, show the best chance of viral inhibition but there isn’t that much of it about. Neurominidase inhibitors are being used because they are more widely available and were useful with SARS and MERS, both caused by corona strains but to date have not been proven to be effective, as of a month ago.

Not really. The 90,000 figure is those known to be infected.

They know that this is a significant underestimate so they have a statistical model to approximate the actual infection level and subsequent mortality rate.

Funny enough I do read quite a few scientific papers, given that I work in medical research and development. If you want to have a pissing competition about who's degree is better than the other, I'm more than happy to oblige. Personally, I'd rather get some common sense out there to the hundreds of thousands of people who are being unnecessarily worried by false information that is being liberally spread round the internet. Yes coronavirus shouldn't be treated with contempt but likewise it should not be blown out of proportion. It's transmission methods bear no resemblance to HIV, it is completely possible to make a full recovery as we understand it at this time. It does not cause suppression or reduction of the human immune system, only overwhelms it, the same as many diseases do. Take sensible precautions, avoid unnecessary public gatherings, wash your hands often. Read WHO suggestions and don't go buying a million rolls of bog roll.

Absolutely agree with most of that apart from not resulting in suppression of the immune system. The influenza virus will do that, among many others. Nobody said its transmission methods were similar to HIV !!!! so I guess I claim the better degree lol.

Pity the UK PM sought to say he’d shaken hands with corona- affected patients during his trip to A and E. His pregnant partner would have loved that. Luckily it was one of his fibs- there were no Cov19 patients in Kettering Hospital that night. The UK heaves a sigh of relief ......

If you are referring to H9N2 for example being able to suppress the bodies expression of IFN stimulated anti viral proteins to itself then you are correct, however this is different to HIV's ability to suppress and attack directly the immune system more generally as it does not leave your body unable to respond or fight other concurrent or subsequent pathogens, beyond them simply overwhelming the bodies capacity to respond by sheer numbers. Perhaps I should have been clearer on that point.

I've not seen anything about the PM shaking hands with any patients so cannot comment on that.

Short attention spans. It's one of the dangers.

Because of the lockdown in China the new infection rate has fallen so there's no problem anymore right?

Wait until people start going back to work there or until the infection rate increases faster here.

"Most governments and large pharmaceutical companies are working around the clock to develop a VACCINE for Covid-19"

There are reported efforts to create a vaccine but testing their effectiveness, safety and the creation of them in high enough volumes is a very lengthy process. Importantly, it costs money and private health companies are only interested in profits.

Expect it to take months to find, test and produce. Plus International approvals times.

Whilst millions worry, it may seem to us outsiders that there would be tons of money to be made - that may not be the case. Watch the progression of the disease without a vaccine.

Is our reliance on a for-profit model only, the intelligent approach to gain such vaccines, or could that be something that results in more people suffering and never potentially getting treatments that are needed?

3.4 % death rate is pretty high.

Its estimated that between 40 and 70 % of people in the USA could be infected.

So lets say 330 mil plus 30 mil undocumented = 360 mil

The the lower rate or 40% = 144 mil

That's 489 k possible deaths at the rate

850k at the higher

The chief medical officer said this morning it will probably take a year to test and roll out a vaccine. Confused why some people on this thread state categorically vaccines don’t work against viruses. It will take a year because the virus has a low mortality rate as opposed to say Ebola which was very high and because the mortality rate is low , the vaccine does not need to be rushed through; corners don’t need to be cut

No one knows what the real rate is because it has been reported that for a good few the infection has very few if any symptoms so it's possible the mortality rate is much lower than feared.

While it's a serious issue it's no zombie apocalypse, yet, and of course the world could do with a few less of us walking about, it would be ironic if the death raised to 30 to 40 percent, it would save the world from man made climate change in a stroke

I didnt say 500,000 and it would seem ive under egged it as the who say the virus has a contagion rate of approx 80% and have revised theirestimated 3.4% as our population is at least 65 million, that means close to two million dead, its not just a sniffle anymore

I didnt say that you did say 500,000 dead. But there are quite a few references on this thread to the 500,000 figure. Anyone who gets to a figure of 500,000 or 700,000 deaths in the UK needs to re-take their GCSE maths lol

Check out what’s happening in China. Review exactly what the CMO said today. You believe every single person in the UK will be infected ?. What’s the population of wuhan?. How many were infected ?. How many died ?. How long did the Chinese turn a blind eye before they acted ?. Is the infection rate in wuhan declining or increasing ?. Is the death rate in wuhan increasing or declining ?. In such a vast , highly densely populated city such as wuhan , what is the projected number of deaths ?.

Firstly i apologise i misread that the mortality rate was 3.4% of all reported cases and as only a fraction of those infected feel ill enough to report it the number of deaths would be considerably lower than i estimated but still considerably higher than it should be.

Really? Strange way to go about it. Surely if that was the intention then you wouldn’t purposefully misrepresent the maths behind it and instead focus on an actually valid reason.

Antibiotics will NOT help you

.

That is why my doctor has given me a 3 month prescription of Antibiotics

.

I have no spleen, hence my immune system is lower than others, I should have been on antibiotics for life since 1990's but I only take when there is chance of catching a cold or chest infection, but yesterday I took my doctors advice and have gone on antibiotics for 3 months

I did a quick back-of-a-fag-packet calculation, based on current rate of growth for the curve, and if there is no urgent change of policy by the government (like closing down all public events), by two weeks today the numbers will be something like 2000 new cases every day. Two weeks after that it could be up to 100,000 a day, but no-one will be counting by then.

The reported growth rate in china has slowed now, but only because (a) they have put entire cities into isolation and stopped counting, and (b) they have an authoritarian government that is willing to do whatever it takes instead of just twatting on repeating a four word mantra.

I know that you're joking, but try not to think in these over-simplified terms or communicate this sort of thinking.

Anyone, young, middle-aged and old, can be seriously effected if they have an underlying medical condition. This may not be apparent, particularly when they are younger.

You have to act as if everyone is at risk...

"For most people this Coronva virus will be less serious than a mild dose of the flu.

"

Yep.

I mean if you just look at the infographics you can see how severe the risk or little risk the virus is to you.

For me it'd likely just be a mild flu.

Should I take actions incase of infection or a need to self isolate, yes, and I have, as I work in an NHS laboratory and take public transportation.

Again, as another poster eluded to, we just.like to sensationalise things now.

That the overuse of antibiotics and anti bacterial wipes and cleaners is a bigger risk to global health than the Corona virus.

You can get the virus, and get pneumonia and your antibiotics will make no difference whatsoever.

or alternatively they can make the World of difference

depends if your pneumonia is viral or bacterial

fact is;

If you do not have a spleen, or have a spleen that does not work well, you have an increased risk of developing some serious infections. The risk is reduced by: immunisation, taking regular low-dose antibiotics and taking full-strength antibiotics as soon as the first sign of infection develops.

What’s concerning the most aside from the effects of the virus and also the rising death rate in the infected is that there is no current vaccine for this disease which is spreading more and more daily. Mind you there is a round the clock world effort going on in developing vaccinations which will take a while as atm as far as I can tell they are testing on infected animals to see if there is any clearance in their system from the different vaccines administered before they can start on human test subjects down the line. I even Heard a theory that they may try a blood transfer trial from people who have recovered from the virus on to some off the infected and see if that works?

Where has anyone said that antibiotics will aid a viral or fungal infection, go back and read the thread, tell me where anyone states antibiotics will fix viral.

Doctors advise anyone who has no spleen to go on high strength antibiotics right away as soon as a chest infection develops

they advise immediately, they do not advise to wait and take tests to see if bacterial or viral

why dont you read up on that before the mislead people

If you do not have a spleen, or have a spleen that does not work well, you have an increased risk of developing some serious infections. The risk is reduced by: immunisation, taking regular low-dose antibiotics and taking full-strength antibiotics as soon as the first sign of infection develops.

.

You understand that, right?

Too many armchair experts in here on so many subjects don’t you think lol

ignore the "fab" experts and take advice from a doctor you trust in

note I say "a doctor you trust in" as some are better than others, you need to choose well.

Fine. If you really believe that antibiotics will fix your viral or fungal infection then good luck to you

He hasn't said that they will cure either, what he has said that they will prevent secondary bacterial infections which as he has no spleen he is far more susceptible to than you or I.

Glad you can clearly read and understand that _obka3

some on here simply cannot read and understand the simplest of things"

Then I apologise. I did not read your clarification properly.

I still had your initial post in mind:

"why would I be trolling

what is the first thing you are prescribed for pneumonia?

and what secondary infection does corona lead onto?

being totally serious"

"Antibiotics will NOT help you

Just to reiterate:

Pneumonia can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection or fungus.

and your point is?

That the overuse of antibiotics and anti bacterial wipes and cleaners is a bigger risk to global health than the Corona virus.

You can get the virus, and get pneumonia and your antibiotics will make no difference whatsoever.

You understand that, right?

or alternatively they can make the World of difference

If you have no spleen and reduced immune system

a doctor does not wait and carry out tests to see what strain of pneumonia you have, he immediately puts you on high antibiotics, in my case 500mg Amoxicillin, normally you keep this at home as stand by and as soon as you develop signs of a cold or chest infection, you go on this right away

you do not hold off, go visit doctor and ask for tests to see if viral, bacterial or what ever

kind of common sense, but then with some; common sense is not often found.

Again, you did not say that in your initial comment and I did not read your clarification properly.

You would not take antibiotics without thought under other circumstances.

Are you not able to accept an apology?

Stockport

Number of diagnosed cases in UK now doubling every two days, according to latest official figures. At just over 200 cases today (saturday). So:

Monday - 400

Wednesday - 800

Friday - 1,600

Next Sunday - 3,200

Week on Tuesday - 6,400

Week on Thursday - 12,800

Week on Saturday - 25,600

Two weeks on Monday - 51,200

Two weeks on Wednesday - 102,400

Or thereabouts. Might reach the 100 thousand level a few days earlier or later, but it will get there unless the government does something very drastic like forced quarantine of cities and stopping all movement.

Which is a bit crazy as no vaccine means how long will people be in lockdown??

I mean once they allow free movement again it will just start all over again.

I think the idea of the lockdown is to wait until the infection rates drop and end, you only need the vacation really for the next outbreak.

Its going to spread what ever government's around the world do.

Best thing is to slow the spread as much as possibke to give the health service the best chance of coping.

The way to do that is education on hygeine and self isolation, then carry on as normal. Exactly what our government has done.
