I was in Qatar recently and was very surprised to see the Talban have their Political headquarters set up there.

Was very surreal seeing them.

Positive move that I’m sure will be picked apart.

It's a good start.

A pre-agreement though, which is remarkably understated for this administration.

This is a volatile part of the world so fingers crossed it works out.

It is pretty clear that it's success actually seems to be marked by the minimal attention that Trump has given to it before this announcement

Glad to see the US persuading the murdering mullahs to stop murdering and to not allow other murderers to operate in their strictly controlled mysoginistic communities. Hopefully , Pakistan will begin to act in good faith too instead of propping up and harbouring the murderers. But as with Iran, agreeing a deal is one thing; sticking to it is another

I would despite that he's responsible for it. His non-engagment has probably guaranteed it's success so far.

It happened under his watch though so it's his success as President.

I have never argued based on dogma, just the actual data available.

Sadly that may well be the price although the surest way out of poverty is educating women.

Perhaps it has been embedded enough for a benefit to be seen even by the Taliban. Unlikely.

It is a bit naive to only blame Iran or the Taliban if the situation in the middle East becomes volatile and a peace process fails though, don't you think?

So you are complaining about me giving credit to Trump for this? Not fulsome enough praise for you?

He was clearly not engaged in this process. Any 3am tweets from him sat in the toilet? Any Anything on Fox news or the Washington Post?

No. Nothing. Diplomacy happened. The chances of failure increase if this becomes politicised as it becomes the only bit of good news Trump has.

We'll see. Hopefully it will work out well but who knows what the price for peace will be and who will have to pay it?

The Taliban will (probably) do what they have to do until there are no US troops left in Afghanistan.

If they return to their old ways after that, which is certainly possible; the USA will merely treat Afghanistan as it now treats Iran.

It's a win/win. The Taliban get to keep being arseholes and the USA are no longer wasting lives and money to change that.

Far too many western service personnel have died for the political and financial ambitions of an elite who don't give a fuck about human life, unless it's their own; worse still, they've cloaked it in the myth of making us safer.

None of the countries we've devastated over the past 30 years have been any significant threat at all to our way of life.

The biggest threat they've posed is by occasional murders and flooding our streets with heroin. Neither of which our military involvement has stopped.

One thing's for sure. The US Government - and our own - recognise that, eventually, you end up negotiating with terrorists. The fact that it's always from a position of strength is good.

The fact that it always takes such a huge waste of life, time and money is pitiful.

It may well be another case of the last helicopters out of Saigon.

The USA leaves Afghanistan to its fate after thousands of lives and billions of dollars.
