Will Boris throw Gibraltar under a bus in the upcoming talks with the EU.

Now that we are no longer members of the EU, Spain has asked for the other 26 nations support in excluding Gibraltar in any trade deal unless the UK offer concessions over the ownership of Gibraltar.

there are roughly 15000 people living in spain who cross the boarder every day to work there so spain would be hindering its own people too if it got heavy.I saw today the governor of gib said they might ask to join the schengen agreement which could alleviate the problem.

And now their fate is in the hands of the EU and a prime minister who negotiated a worse withdrawal agreement than the one he refused to vote for.

It will be fine. Games will be played and concessions will be made. When they played silly buggers before Portugal were very helpful in shipping stuff down the coast.

Just don’t bank on smooth border crossings for a while.

The UK will never give Gibralter up. Its legally ours, and the people want to remain as a distant part of the UK.

Those calling for it to be handed back, would have more legitimacy, if they also called for Spain to hand back their North African enclaves.

Spain has always in the past used Gibraltar to deflect from problems at home but strangely enough never wants to talk about its own little enclaves cueata and melilla with morocco. The new left wing government might not be so interested in bringing the subject up as the prime minister was backed up by the erc Catalans major independence party.

Will these 15000 continue to have free movement of labour, or require a highly skilled visa??

Johnson quickly threw the DUP under the bus so why he wouldn't throw Gibraltar under one? Gibraltar being in Schengen would definitely help alleviate some issues but it would create new ones. It could even be seen as a step towards Spanish rule, in the same way Northern Irish unionists hate Johnson's brexit deal. Quite why anyone thought leaving the European Union would be a simple process, or even one that would give us a net benefit escapes me.

If the people of Gibraltar were allowed FoM then the people of Northern Ireland should also get it. In which cast the Scots would be well minded to claim they deserve it too.

This whole saga has been a huge embarrassment. If nothing else it will ultimately be the final chapter when history books are written of the British Empire in the distant future.

A Brexit Government isn’t going to throw Gib under the bus as it’s clearly counter productive to the whole Brexit vibe. It will be seen as a weakness and get the drums banging again.

Realistically Spain can only fuck with the border and sail their shitty little corvette through the waters when it’s not broke down. La Linea the town next door leans heavily on Gibraltar for money and has a proud history of supplying a workforce.

Brexit actually gives Gibraltar an opportunity to work a little closer with Spain and make their own arrangements. Just like they did with the new Airport when they built it straddling the border. I hope they make schengen arrangements themselves.

It will work out.

He'll do nothing of the sort because they're UK citizens, and for the same reasons that Madrid won't allow Catalonian independence.

Who do we give it back to? Argentina never owned it. They have had no interest in it for decades, and hundreds of years prior to the invasion. They only start mentioning it when theyre government needs something to detract from whats going on in the mainland. And they have heard of possible oilfields.

spain uses gibralter the same way.

As has been mooted, why dont they give up the canaries? Part of Alaska is not actually on the mainland of North America, its in Eurasia, are the russians moaning?

Different countrys seem to have different memory spans, thinking about Irish reunification,,this year is the 100 year anniversary of partition of the island, in the British mindset that would seem to be a awful long time, in Ireland it was yesterday

Here in Ireland we also have a saying that involves history

THE BRITISH NEVER REMEMBER, THE IRISH NEVER FORGET

That’s the problem with the Irish... (and the Brits as well) quite a lot of them live in the past, and can’t seem to focus on the now.... or the future...

Of course thr EU will be difficult to negotiate with and Johnson doesn't care about anyone but himself. No one will probably do well, but the citizens there should not have anything but their wishes as the priority. I don't knew what will happen but it will be what is viewed as right for Johnson.
