They are in a bit of a spot. They need to be scrutinising legislation not simply voting against everything. Having a leader that will take the division out of their seats and back brexit, will possibly win back voter confidence. There is a difference between holding the government to account and having unachievable policies. The right policies will need to be set out fast and stuck to as these few next years will pass quickly and voters will be watching to see if they are credible or just opposing with false promises.

Though as some say - they are in opposition, they don't need a mandate aye.

Just as the electorate the Tory candidates needed to convince last summer was the fruit loops of the Tory grassroots, with rhetoric to match, so the electorate the Labour candidates need to convince today is the fruit loops of the Labour Party, with rhetoric to match.

Current labour have not learnt and never will learn. One or two of the candidates are saying the right things, unfortunately their common sense is not in line with extreme left wing policy. The extremist candidates, say it wasn’t Corbyn’s fault, their policies were sound and supported in the country and blame their huge defeat on the right wing media and “Brexit” ( whatever that means ). These platitudes will please the NEC , the unions and momentum ; hence another Corbynista will be elected so welcome to the wilderness ‘Labour’

Labour's position on BREXIT, as indeed everyone's position on BREXIT, is irrelevant now. It may become relevant again in the future if BREXIT goes badly wrong but for now the issue is dead: BREXIT is happening for good or bad whether you want it or not.

The reality is hard politics, whether left or right will never appeal to the Voting masses.

I hope you are joking.

If not:

2017 General election result.

Popular vote: Conservative 13,636,684 (42.4%) Labour 12,878,460 (40.0%)

Seats: Conservative 317. Labour 262.

Some win.

As for "winning the argument" last month?

If the biggest defeat since 1935 is winning, I'd really like to see what would be classed as a loss.

If the Labour party really think that, then they are going to be in opposition for a very long time.

Yes, the exit is a done deal effectively. On Jan 31.

After that, we float in the Atlantic for 11 months, still tethered to the bloc.

Beyond that, it's anyone's guess.

The dogshit analogy is based upon the idea that sensible people can see that brexshit is a pile of pooh.

Leavers on the other hand see it as a brave bold and fearless step into the unknown like sailing off to newfoundland was to previous generations.

The trouble is, the world is a smaller place now and there are no new horizons to explore so basically you are leaving the EU for some spurious attempt at independence (like a naive teenager leaving home) and, as ill- equipped as you are for the journey, you are determined to undertake it no matter how much suffering it brings you and your family.

As for who dares wins - equating leavers with the sas is just doggerel and a bit embarrassing.

O dear, maths isn’t your strong point then ? Look at the figures, how many people voted for the Cons & Brexit party? Now compare that with how many voted for the rest ? Can you accept that? Is it to difficult for you to understand? The people voted 52 -48 in the referendum? What is the vote share in the last GE? It is rubbish to suggest that the last GE was a second referendum?

"... even considering a remainer leader?

Why are they also considering hard left, socialist candidates that the country has repeatedly rejected?

Political suicide, again. They just aren't listening

You've forgotten. They won the election in 2017 and they won the argument last month.

About time we had PR then rather than FPTP dont you think?

Funny how Labour supporters like to bang on about PR when they have just lost an election.

But never when they have just won. Funny old world.

Ah personal prejudice oozes from this poster again! I guess you think you won a massive victory with your 2.4 per cent more of the popular vote? Hilarious! It was hardly a landslide in terms of the overall vote now was it?

FYI I have wanted PR for years because I dont believe that FPTP does anyone any favours in terms of representation. The labour party is tied to the influence of Len McCluskey which personally I dislike but I have in my time voted for a number of different centrist parties and am not wedded to any. Does that enlighten you or do you prefer the echo chamber?

So you would have been happy for UKIP to pick up around 80 seats in 2015 then."

Not as happy as you probably but perhaps it would have made the Tories get their act in gear and kick that cunt Cummings into touch!

Maths?

Get Brexit done 56% of seats in the commons

Erm, bespectacled idiot who thinks the queens speech is on in the morning and is clueless about Brexit 31% of seats in the commons.

Get Brexit done 365 seats

Don’t give a fuck either way 203 seats

And in effect it wasn’t a 2nd referendum?

Can I recommend politics for dummies- it’s a great read

"You don't know ...we may move forward and prosper...and leave the eu dictatorship behind ...lots of guessing going onSome people are scared of change and are happy to go through life that way.Who dares wins

Some people are sensible and can see a pile of dogshit and avoid it, others think lets jump in it and see how deep it is and how many people are going to get covered in glory! You know some strange people i dont know anyone who jumps in dog shit and to be honest i dont want to.

Only sensible people can see that brexshit is a pile of pooh.? Meaning the majority of those who voted in the GE and the referendum are not sensible . Only remainers are sensible ? Ha ha ha ha"

Oh I am sure some non sensible people can see its a pile of pooh too. Protest votes are what they are and the majority won because they were told the EU is a big bad monster who we need to run away from before they take our liberty and freedom away - am I wrong in that assertion? I think I personally was lied to by people like Farage, Cummings, Boris etc and to hear the echo chamber of you and your pals saying - get over it, we won, you’re wrong, etc etc etc ad nauseum is shameful but I am sure you dont concern yourself with the subtleties of humanity like empathy and humility

Are you stupid? Are you trying to suggest that the voting system in the GE and the referendum is the same? Are you suggesting that all the people who voted for the Tories want to leave the EU? Are you suggesting that the only reason people voted for the Tories is to get Brexit done? Are you suggesting that anyone who didn’t vote for the Tories want to remain? It was a GE not a referendum? You do know the difference ?

"Still no acceptance of leave ...what part don't u understand ....is it the word majority your struggling with xx"

No, not really! The bit I struggle with is people who cant accept that their win was not a thumping majority but nearer to the skin of their teeth in the original referendum. The ge was won by 2.4 percent swing of votes and that again was a protest against the failure of the tories to get brexit through over the last three years while they fought an internal existential war, and the abject and profound failure of the momentum movement in labour to realise that they were heading for a massive and predictable defeat. So to summarise, I am fed up of hearing the same old cocks crowing about decisive victories which were anything but! Oh and what were the kisses about btw because I have zero interest in old men

I've no clue but they do need to have someone who's capable of taking on Johnson and ensuring all citizens' needs are cared for and rights upheld.

They need to ensure that they understand the election and what people want. I think more people voted for a remain position party than a hard leave one, so the important thing is strategy and ability

Very simple they're fanatics, these people continually go on about principles because they will never bend or be pragmatic. I believe Becky Wrong Daily will win because Momentum run 3

Labour.

But that day they run the country is long in coming because the FPTP voting system whilst unfair, actually works because it give the decision to the floating vote, the fanatics whether right or left only make up 50% of the total vote, so their beliefs thankfully have no chance in being fully implemented.

And yes, we’re leaving the EU this month. That doesn’t make us all brexiters.

For what it’s worth I now turn my attention to more pressing matters. Like the tories attacking hard won workers rights.

Brexit is now a sideshow, it will either fail miserably and take the tories with it, or succeed against the beliefs of business, economists and industry experts, and be a positive thing.

The main thing now is to let Johnson and the tories own every inch of it.

What you have just described is a world where a person can employee someone to do a job for a price. Then when the worker completes that job, the boss can say ‘nah, not good enough’ and fire the worker without pay, with no cause for complaint or right or reply.

Reckon that system would be abused by business owners much?

The idiocy in your pronouncements is astonishing - the reason we wont have a car industry is because car manufacturing is now an integrated multi national industry working across borders tariff free but hey when we leave the EU what will be left to strip away from it. We need to re-adopt the concept of slavery to make life as easy as possible for business owners to get work done at next to zero cost.

The irony is the more that lefties scoff at people like us with right wing ideas, the more people move to the right.

Perhaps when you stop resorting to the motto of "Everyone who disagrees with me is an idiot fascist" and ACTUALLY engage with an open mind, people like us won't feel the need to push a harder right wing agenda.

All this, Trump, Brexit and Tories is a push back against left wing scorn. This is why you guys keep losing at every opportunity!

It is cyclical, the far right rear it’s ugly head every 30 odd years but loses momentum and goes hiding under its rock again. Are you hoping that Brexit and the current government abolish human and workers rights? You don’t agree with equality? You think the NHS should be abolished? You are living in the past, clinging on to some kind of nostalgic view from 100 years ago , wake up, open your eyes , your backing the wrong horse my frightened friend

I’ve never been a tory but I absolutely agree that governments need a strong and principled opposition in order for democracy to work.

I honestly am under no illusions that labour fought a woefully inadequate campaign with no real understanding of what strategies they would need to adopt if they were to retain what they had and as a result they have lost their heartlands for a few years at least.

We all know that political campaigns thrive on lies and fear mongering whichever part of the spectrum you inhabit but the thing that gets me is the lack of good decent centrists in any of the parties now.

The conservatives have moved to the right to save their arses from ukip/bxp, while labour lurched to the left under momentums cock-eyed world view, and the lib dems are out in the wilderness after a series of hopeless leaders. Where do we go from here if we want a decent, honest country that rewards people for hard work but looks after the less able too?

If it happens regularly, word will get round and people will avoid working for said company.

Here's an interesting fact for you.

In the last 50 years, twice as many people have set foot on the moon than have been Labour Prime Minister.

And with the way things are currently going, it's going to be at least a decade before they're even within a sniff of a chance, though, personally, I think the party is finished.

They're completely out of touch with the people.

And having lost Scotland, a region Labour has ALWAYS needed to secure an election victory, I don't see getting anywhere near power for decades.

Not strictly true - I think Tony Blair won in England on a couple of occasions.

But I agree with the sentiment.

The loss of its dominance in Scotland ought to have been a wake-up call for Labour.

It wasn't.

Now the same thing is on the verge of happening in the north of England.

They didn't learn lessons from Scotland.

If they don't learn them from England then, yes, they are finished as a nationwide political with aspirations to govern.

I’ve listened to everyone standing to be the next labour leader . Only one of them appears to understand the scale of the problem In acknowledging that problem in contrite terms with sensible ideas to get labour back in a position to challenge at the next election . Unfortunately for labour , that person will not secure enough support from the NEC, momentum, the unions and the hordes of left wing corbynista extremists in the membership. It’s gonna be more of the same electorate deniers in charge. Great News - yay !!!

Interesting point! The labour party need as many subs as they can get because very few big businesses support them so the question is does that mean they are more democratic because they let anyone into the party and therefore leave themselves open to being momentum-ised or letting people in who have other agendas? They are democratic in a way that the tory party are not as they allow members to choose the agenda at conference but as amply demonstrated in this last election they end up in their own echo chamber. Say what you like about Blair but at least he understood that you have to lead and have an overview and be prepared to dismiss the crackpots and the lunatic fringes. Until Labour get over this and accept as the people in China and Russia have that a strong leader is what matters they wont get back in power any time soon.

Nope. 4995 of the 7,000 odd who bothered to vote , endorsed her ( the only name for Leader on the ballot). 2098 people put ‘no’ against her name . The 18% turnout was embarrassing with the result that only 12% of momentum members voted for RLB. Even momentum can’t be arsed to garner any enthusiasm as to who the next Labour loser should be.
