Batting Foxes

So in the papers this morning a prominent anti Brexit lawyer is being lambasted for putting a fox trapped in chicken netting out of its misery with a baseball bat. On the same front page is a picture of a six year old dressed in hunting pink calling the hounds with a bugle. How does that sit with you all?

The story about the lawyer was weird. It's a matter for the RSPCA, who have been involved. That he was against brexit seems unrelated.

The campaign's to legalise fox hunting again are underway. So it's no surprise that this stuff is in the news again.

I guess it was the hypocrisy of the “cute” fox hunting child being on the same front page as the “evil” anti brexit QC - I was wondering where some of the posters on here would place themselves with regards to this

What does his view of Brexit have to do with the welfare of chickens and foxes?

Did the article mention if he had a big cock or anything?

I care not for his Brexit views as they are his views and I will respect them as just that his own views but if he doesn’t support the worlds greatest football team (SOUTHEND UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB) then he can fuck right off, just my view of course.

Well, a quick death by baseball bat might be preferable to being torn apart by hounds; but did he really have to do it? I'm not so sure.

As for the other part; any six year old can be raised to be an evil little shite, given the appropriate input - or lack of it - from their parents.

The fox was after his chickens and got caught up and he must have belted it with said bat.

If it was a quick any on the head killing it outright then what’s the problem ?

Now the problem here is that the QC in question was referred to as being anti-brexit and in my opinion he made the front pages because of that association rather than the killing of an ensnared animal. So the link isn’t about what he did but his political affiliations that make him a target and I am sure if he had been riding to hunt and watched a fox being ripped apart by hounds it would hardly have raised a murmur. So stop being so complacent and lazy and try to imagine why its not a weird thing to think?

I'm against animal cruelty and both options appear to be this.

He seemed to have taken a dreadful decision, instead of letting the animal go free or humane care and improving his chicken security.

Fox hunting should disappear into history, as something that has been learned from.

Certain questions come to mind

1) how was he to get near a wild animal with very sharp teeth and free it? Ok, call the RSPCA.

2) what is in the mind of an ordinary person whose way to deal with this is to kill? Surely not the first thought you’d have without previous.

3) whoever buys these papers?

I don't believe that for a second - he had posted before about running out into the garden with a baseball bat after the fox, there was NO netting for him to get caught up in (I suspect a snare myself) and there's no way battering a fox to death is quick or painless, quite apart from being illegal. It is barbaric, I hope he is prosecuted and made an example of.

So, you kill a fox with a baseball bat on your own property, that nobody else is aware of, until-:

You call the RSPCA and tell them what you have done,

Then post on social media telling the world what you have done, hmmm.

Your actions are now on the front page of national newspaper.

The cynical part of me is asking, does he have a book or some other such enterprise about to be launched.

As for the picture of the child, if you want people to look at something, whether it’s to promote or protest just use a photo of a cute kid, works every time.

Facts - He has posted pics of his chicken coop, it is made of a rigid steel mesh of a kind that a fox cannot get entangled in. He just battered an animal to death for no good reason, and he had expressed the intention to do so beforehand.

Most people with common sense would simply have turned off the electrical supply work disconnected the battery......

While I would not wish to meddle with a scared fox, the chances of it being caught in well-fixed chicken mesh is zero. If it had not been put deeply enough, it would have been a simple matter to release it. However, if you are a fox-hater, perfect opportunity.

My initial questions asked about who would do this. It’s not normally the first option of choice to murder anything: it takes either previous or a certain personality. And animal cruelty comes before or with, human abuse. Maybe that should be investigated...

Weasels, pinemartins, mink, rats and birds of prey will all kill chickens too. The fox will kill all the chickens with the intention of either returning or burying them.

If you keep chickens, either in town or rurally, a fox is only sourcing food. It may piss you off that it’s your chickens that provide your food but for a fox, it’s natural. It’s you who are redefining nature. Get better fencing. It’s what I did when it happened to mine. I didn’t feel the need to kill something instead. I accepted it, regretted it happening and made sure it would not happen again. The culprit moved on........

As you say it is hard for a fox to get caught in chicken mesh but far from impossible and if it wasnt trapped in something he wouldn't have been able to hit it, as for releasing a fox from any sort of fencing, good luck with that you would be severely bitten

Not so long ago, a whale I believe got lost, ended up in the Thames where upon a few hundred people, crying save the whale, save the whale, carrying candles, praying etc. A boat with a winch at a cost of £75000 hoisted the whale onto the boat in an attempt to save it....it died.

in the 1800's a whale did the same thing, where upon the people in that part of London, raced to the scene with knives etc, proceeded to catch it, cut it up for its skin to make coats and its blubber for their oil lamps.

If I’d battered to death next door’s dog who was a social nuisance and became trapped in my fence, the last thing I’d do was tweet about it.

I think there was a bit of bravado about it, of looking for affirmation, praise or testosterone-boosting intention in the tweet. As I said, it’s not the first option of most to batter a wild animal to death then seek social-media affirmation, nor should it be accepted as ‘normal’. The link between animal abuse and human abuse is proven, and very strong. We should think of that.

The River Thames whale was a juvenile female northern bottlenose whale which was discovered swimming in the River Thames in central London on Friday 20 January 2006.

According to the BBC, she was five metres long and weighed about seven tonnes. The whale appeared to have been lost, as her normal habitat would have been around the coasts of the far north of Scotland and Northern Ireland, and in the seas around the Arctic Ocean.

It was the first time the species had been seen in the Thames since records began in 1913. She died from convulsions as she was being rescued shortly after 19:00 GMT on 21 January 2006.

Can you befriend a fox?

I live in a 2-up, 2-down in the Bristol suburbs.

Next to the remains of an old orchard with lovely big trees.

The neighbourhood squirrel sometimes pops in and so does the neighbourhood fox.

If I leave some food out for them, might they become my friends?

Nuts for the squirrel.

What about the fox?

"Can you befriend a fox?)"

Absolutely.

There’s a lovely clip on u tube of a fox getting its tummy tickled and wagging its tail. My friend had two as a child who were completely tame.

However, as would be the case with dogs to get them as tame,, they were hand- reared from 2-3 weeks old. They are wild animals and deserve to live a wild life. Older ones will act exactly as an unhandled dog would but with much less urge to attack.
