EU to offer citizenship rights to UK citizens

First bit of good news from Brexit.

Guy Verhofstadt confirms plan to allow UK citizens to opt-in as "associate citizens", giving us full freedom of movement, as part of next stage of negotiations.

"EU negotiators will offer Brits an individual opt-in to remain EU citizens, chief negotiator confirms" - Independent

I hope the UK Government does not block this idea - I'll be first in the queue.

There's certain traction in allowing UK citizens this. Many travel to Europe for many reasons, and many of us still want to remain good friends with our European cousins.

Might be a good precursor to getting the softest of Brexit.

The likes of Ms Patel will have an ideological hatred of giving UK citizens any EU rights whatsoever.

This is his Facebook post accompanying the video:

"Everyone presumes the European Parliament will give automatically its consent to the Withdrawal Agreement. But we first need to solve the outstanding problems with the citizens' rights. Citizens can never become the victims of Brexit"

He says UK citizens in the EU and EU citizens in the UK are panicking about their status.

He is inviting the European Parliament to withhold consent for the Withdrawal Agreement until citizens of both blocs are assured their existing rights are maintained after Brexit.

Sounds promising.

Because they will be to blame TM laid down months ago how those already here would be treated, this will play straight into Boris's hands, it's more to do with the political dream than their worry about the lives of people.

Erm.... we will leave the EU at the end of Jan 2020. The EU have agreed to that deal. There will then be a transition period during which time a trade deal and other aspects of the UK will be negotiated and hopefully agreed to

The Withdrawal Agreement has been agreed between the UK Government and the EU.

It still requires ratification by the UK Parliament and the European Parliament.

I think it is due before the European Parliament on Jan 28.

The agreements to be reached in the transition phase - all the bilaterals, including trade - require much wider agreement.

The Withdrawal Agreement needs only the UK Government, UK Parliament, EU and European Parliament approval.

The next set of agreements requires the above, plus the 27 member states and some regional assemblies to approve. Any one can veto those agreements.

Well let's hope it does come in to play as we would certainly pay to keep our EU Citizenship. As this how they should keep the 48% happy who voted to stay in the EU.
