Dr Kingsley Purdam, senior lecturer in social research methods and statistics at the University of Manchester, said the figures were "shocking".

"Poverty, austerity and cuts to public services are impacting on how long people are living in the UK," he said.

"We all need to look after our health but many of us, including the most vulnerable populations, need help at a time when evidence suggests that services are being cut.

The report also cites Obesity, dementia, diabetes and increases in pension age.

It also says that the downward trend started in 2010.

Hi. It would be impossible to make a meaningful comment on the topic without seeing a breakdown of the data . You would need to see age , location, family history , area , income , nature of illness and how we performed against other counties. If we were to benchmark ourselves against other counties we may find we have performed better than average .

As Wales is a Labour run NHS is it performing any better ?

Dont mention the labour run nhs it doesn't fit there agenda. I think plaid will make gains in wales as they are pushing the dismal labour record every chance they get.The snp are not alot better on the nhs either.

Yes, I read something similar a while back - how the growth in longevity since 1945 has stalled in the last decade.

It's no coincidence that economic growth has stalled in the last decade, and that this will be the first generation to grow up poorer than the one who went before.

The price of austerity is counted in many different ways.

On your first point, I did check that aspect and yes it's a UK thing. But you're welcome to double check.

I get what you are saying but it is a complex issue which involves funding. As someone mentioned on another thread, Administrators run hospitals not politicians.
