How will the providers who currently charge for broadband be compensated for their losses?

I suspect there will be (in the unlikely event of this happening) something like a high speed ‘ business ‘ internet, banking, appointments etc to cater for those who have issues with broadband & a non business for gaming, streaming etc that is paid for...if such technologies exist to split functions

I think it's a bit like the railways - the track belongs to the public, and the trains that run on them belong to commercial companies.

I don’t see why it can’t work. Other countries have free broadband. And when we say free, it’s not, it’s just paid for from taxation. Rather than my money going to Richard Branson, I’d be paying for a national service. If I stopped paying £360 a year to virgin and payed a little bit more tax I wouldn’t mind. It’s swings and roundabouts.

With the corporations already looking to overthrow net neutrality what ever makes you think that it it's not going to be censored/restricted anyway?

The idea of taking broadband under public ownership is to ensure that the whole country gets 'fit for purpose' infrastructure for everyone. People forget that rural dwellers like me only get 0.5 Mb/S because 'we are not worth it'.

Quite why people see this as some communist plot 'god only knows' last time I looked we had free (maintained at public expense) roads for everyone to use and a free health service for everyone to use (although the Tories want to flog that off to the corporations).

Britain lags way behind in national broadband infrastructure because of our fragmented market driven approach.

Yes, can you imagine if someone in 2019 suggested taking healthcare into public ownership and creating a National Health Service.

They'd be called a communist, a Marxist, an enemy of the state blah blah.

It's quite extraordinary

If the government broadband isn’t over 50 mbps I would pay like I do now for the fastest.

I can’t see why all the knickers are getting twisted.

If there is enough money for Brexit then there’s enough.money for anything labour want to do..

This free broadband is loose change compared to the economic cost of Brexit.

Relax we’ve been under austerity for a decade .Weve been saving the pennies under Conservative policy apparently..

Would a nationalised broadband service be against EU competition rules? If so how will labour manage to achieve this whilst still being in "the club"? And before you ask "do I want free broadband ", no because it wont really be free, I will be paying for it through my taxes an probably paying for the bone idle ones that don't pay nothing in too, and more importantly that money could fix so many other issues that I think are more important.

And still no ones answered the question about how the existing broadband providers will be compensated now their business is destroyed.

The state already runs enough interference into my life.

I have no desire to hand them control of this aspect of my privacy.

Has it been stated whats being given away? Free, yes. But what speed?

If it's less than I already pay for, why would I want this "offer?"

Bearing in mind the current providers are struggling to reach less urban communities I can't see how this will be funded.

Bearing in mind what comes down your "pipe" is only as good as the pipe will allow, if what's being offered is more than we can currently receive, the entire telecoms network will need to be rebuilt.

I shudder to think what that will cost or where it's coming from.

So no, before you ask, I don't want or need free broadband.

I would like vast amounts of money to be pumped into other areas of society that would offer far greater benefit.

There is so much more at stake than this.

You realise everything in every manifesto is aimed at a particular group of voter .

I don’t need free broadband .My nan is also dead she was a southerner and lived to 97 .She should of got paid the same as my grandad seeing as she started work at 10 years old as a maid and retired at 75 as a waitress.

The thing labour is offering my family is no tuition fees.

My kids will be at university in 5 years.

Didn’t they promise people we’d be better of straight away? That life would be immediately better? Wasn’t the mantra ‘Project Fear’ to discredit sensible estimates of what we would be throwing away?

But now you say its about playing the long game 5-10 years for things to get better! Maybe that truth should be shared with the electorate? the other side of that coin is they said half a million jobs will disappear the day after we vote leave think it was Osborn who said that project fear was on both sides "

& you think it will take 5-10 years to get better? You accept that Brexit will cause significant problems for many, but it will all be fine in the future? I just do not see this being the case, the existing government has no track record of doing anything like this -

Universal Credit has been a fiasco,

Brexit Negotiations, fiasco,

HS2, fiasco,

Crossrail, fiasco,

Home Office treatment of Windrush and immigrants, a fiasco,

Austerity, a fiasco,

Social Services, a fiasco,

the NHS underfunded and pushed to the brink. The is the current Governments track record...

Nope.

This was something Cameron dreamt up.

Nothing to do with EU.

And re Government switching stuff off, I think you'll find the UK Government already possesses that capability - contingency planning for a national emergency.

.

That's not really the same.

The government put infrastructure in that people paid a service charge for using, you know, water bills electric bills, car tax, fuel duty.

If he said he was going to put broadband into every home then charge people a monthly bill then that would be a fair comparison.

This is of course typical government wastage, the reason no private companies are installing broadband is were moving to 5g and 6g over the air technology which will make cabling redundant.

Im not a knocker of nationalised industries but we already have some of the cheapest data costs in Europe, this is an industry that really doesn't need government intervention.

It never ceases to amaze me, the power that our media have over people.

A party offer you something for free, something that we all have to pay for through subscriptions and government subsidies already anyway, and will cost nobody earning under £85k a single penny, yet the press have you arguing against it.

These same idiots would have argued against the formation of the NHS, welfare state, National Grid, votes for women etc etc.

Wake up and realise you're being played.

How will the providers who currently charge for broadband be compensated for their losses?

But Boris promised!!!

Surely we’ll get it straight after all the new hospitals he promised us during the Brexit campaigns?

When will people realise that red or blue, many of them are very rich.

JC has a nett worth in excess of £3 million and will get an index linked pension well over £150k a year.

He's very rich. Many on both sides are more wealthy than him.

In rebuttal people will whine "so and so from xyz party is richer"

What has an individual politician's wealth got to do with anything?

I would imagine any career politician will have done quite well. It's an (arguably) important job, requiring knowledge across a lot of areas.

It's more about the type of policies they are getting behind.

Generally it would seem that Tory policy benefits the better off, whilst Labour policy benefits the poorer or less able of society.

Yes, that's a very black and white statement. But it boils down to this.

Central

It's the conservatives who have spent £millions on censorship, with the failed adult verification for porn, due to have been started last year, delayed to this and now added to a wider bill to be introduced.

This is baseless nonsense from op. The move is ideological to return some former state owned utility to itself and to prevent the UK from relegating itself to a country trailing others due to poorer tech
