"Is that the 10 year plan to cut the working week to 4 days? Oh, except those that work in the NHS of course as labour hadn’t factored this into their NHS 10 year spending plans.. oh wait The Labour position has flip flopped again so McDonald says the NHS would be included.. maybe the labour advisors realised NHS staff would be rather upset at being excluded and having to work 20% longer than private sector counterparts.... though there has been no explanation of how the the extra 20% of salaries would be funded or where they will find the extra 20% of NHS workers So are the NHS (and other public services like police) going to be excluded from the promised 4 day week or is there a massive block hole in Labours spending plans I’m a self employed farmer I can’t magically work fewer hours yet maintain my income. How will any will self employed people maintain their income whilst cutting to a 4 day week? 20% increase on your boiler service, 20% increase in your builders charges 20%. What about teachers? Will we need 20% more or do we cut our children’s education to a 4 day week? Either the 4 day week is a cynical vote grabbing pledge that they know can be honoured or those developing Labours policies are complete morons! Do they think we all work in offices, factories and warehouses?? "How about hiring more staff? One job divided by two is far more efficient, also shift work? Technology also will deliver more reductions in time and effort. It’s about changing farming practices to accommodate, I’m sure it’s tough in rural areas, but there are people willing to help find solutions. People seem to forget that everyone finds a way. Labour are providing an alternative way of thinking about work life balance. They see farmers toiling for pittance, contracted workers slaving extra hours for nothing, temporary workers with multiple jobs. It’s about redressing the balance. Happy workers make productive workers. | |||

With automated factories companies don’t need to be locate close to a pool of skilled workers. Companies will move production to territories with lower land, lower energy and lower taxation costs... | |||

One job divided by two " Firstly Labours spending plans don’t account for the extra costs hiring more public sector staff would require... more NHS staff, more police, more teachers, so the policy is not costed and not affordable. Most small businesses in the UK have few employees. If I have one employee and have to pay them for 5 days output from 4 days work I have to work out how to increase their daily productivity by 20%. This would be achievable in a few sectors but there are plenty of jobs that can not squeeze 5 days output into a 4 day week. The only way to maintain 5 days incomes from 4 days work would be to significantly increase the price charged to the customer. Bills all increase, everyone gets a 4 day weekend but most can not afford to enjoy it | |||
