I'm studying politics as part of my hnc

My tutor keeps saying we need to be impartial and unbiased in our views

My argument is that u cant everyone has a point of veiw everyone has an agenda

So how does one be free thinking impartial and unbiased in this world?

Free thinking is hard, most are born with it or have it drummed into them via a particular industry.

Partiality and bias is rather easier, you just need to recognise it in yourself.

Yeah fully understand where you are coming from and i dont think anyone can be totally unbias,some less than others by some of the stuff i read on here.

Tim minchin gives good advice on this subject.

“We must think critically, and not just about the ideas of others. Be hard on your beliefs. Take them out onto the verandah and beat them with a cricket bat.... Be intellectually rigorous. Identify your biases, your prejudices, your privilege.”

That is what you learn at college,being able to think for yourselves.Maybe you do not want to because it might change your stereotype views.If that is the case then why bothder to study.i guess your a remainer who might find out why so many want to live you might learn something.

I run with the facts and if the facts run contrary to my initial belief then my belief changes to reflect the facts.

OP, if you have access to a debating club join it. Having to argue both sides of a debate, learning how to score debating points teaches practical critical thinking and is a very good starting point for gaining political objectivity.

How to you say what is fact when almost anything can be span in a negative or positive light

Facts are just words we ourself define as truth

You would benefit from separating what you know about things from what is your opinion. If you can't cite something, then it's probably more likely going to be your collective wisdom with opinion.

Human bias is inevitable - it's largely not conscious and influences all that we do. Developing your critical thinking skills will help and when writing you can shape your argument upon known sources of reasoning and data, demonstrating how you reach your presented conclusions. These may be different from your opinions but by using external materials, you will have demonstrated how you have considered available evidence and reached your conclusion, which may sometimes be that there isn't one clear most appropriate answer.

Once you are in politics..... you become a politician. All politicians are biased. It’s inevitable, and impossible to be impartial. You take up a political position which is usually contrary to common sense, reason and sanity. Brexiteers are a case in point. The pursuit of a political goal to the detriment of the people, the nation, the economy.

In this day and age it has become ever more important to ascertain whether the source of any information is valid or if it is driven by an agenda, especially given the prevalance of alternative viewpoints available via the interweb. This makes it hard to come to rational conclusions and as we have seen with Trump and Brexit logical opinions and rational decisions become so complex that many are drawn to a simple emotional reaction by the complexity and confusion of information they are confronted with on a day to day basis. I will probably be branded as saying people are thick and make ignorant choices but to be honest I think some people are not equipped for the task or dont feel they have any influence and so they choose either to be drawn to making what appears to be an active antagonistic choice such as making America great or leaving the EU or they dont choose at all because they believe all politicians, judges, etc lie and do what they want anyway so why bother. The frustration that has been building up amongst the populace since the austerity brought on by the last crash (caused by sub prime gambling in the usa) and the feeling that they are powerless makes fertile ground for all this madness.....discuss!

So that is my polemic of the current situation, driven by my own scepticism and distrust of the information age, which if you follow my train of thought means that ultimately I am making an emotional choice too!

Everyone is, there is so much mis information now and with smart phones monitoring what you read they send more of the same which further enforces your beliefs.The trouble is most are to busy living their lives to sort through all the rubbish that is published.Headlines rule these days.

Free thinking is easy enough. Listen to what others have to say, examine the facts available to you and make up your own mind. People will disagree with you but you will know why you think what you think and you'll be able to justify it until someone else is able to convince you otherwise.

Being unbiased and impartial isn't always necessary, or even desirable. It's ok to be biased and you do not need to be impartial when it comes to condemning racists, for example.

So, your side of the argument is valid.
