A marker in the sand. UK is currently the “5th largest economy in the world”. Post Brexit , where will the UK be on the ladder in say 5 and 10 years ?

In 10 years from now, might we be measuring countries by their sustainability rather than GDP, as a result of pressures arising from climate change?

We were the 5th largest economy in the world in 1960 when we joined EFTA. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when we joined the EEC in 1973. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when we had the first referendum on staying in the EEC in 1975. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when we went cap in hand to the IMF in 1977. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when Margaret Thatcher's government came to power in 1979. We were the 5th largest economy in the world right the way the industrial decline in the 1980s. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when the Twin Towers came down in 2001. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when we went to war on Iraq in 2003. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when the banking crisis hit in 2008. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when Cameron's government came to power in 2010. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when Cameron won again in 2015. We were the 5th largest economy in the world when we had the EU referendum in 2016. It's now 2019, nearly 2020, and we're still the 5th largest economy in the world.

Through good and bad times for over 50 years we've been the 5th largest economy in the world. It means absolutely nothing.

If you check your facts I believe you will find we are no longer the 5th largest economy in the world (by many measurements), we were overtaken by France in 2016/17 and have been falling away from them ever since and will soon be the 6th largest economy (if not lower in the league) by all measurements soon.

That makes no sense whatsoever. You say we were overtaken in 2016/2017 ( meaning they are now 5th, so we would now be 6th), then you say we will soon be the sixth. So that means we are still the 5th. Any , if we are the fifth, still the fifth and possibly soon to be the sixth - the question remains as above. Oh never mind

"By “many measurements”..... the power of non specific mumbo jumbo"

So how do you measure an economies performance?

By basic GDP? By output per person? By economic activity as a % of the population? By the difference between the top and bottom of the economic tree?

Or is it all non specific mumbo jumbo

unless it comes from News International the Mail or Express Groups?

I saw more poverty in the united states than I could have believed yet they are meant o be incredibly rich.

Visited Greece many times, for me the richest people in Europe, not moneywise but in spirit and love.

This country is poor very poor and morally bankrupt the way I measure things.Number one is happiness and generosity of spirit.

I bet most do not even understand what I am talking about.

The Eu has destroyed this as it is destroying Greece and there AMAZING people

Well presently 6th largest economy in the world, after being overtaken by India, and soon to be 7th largest, as soon to be overtaken by France!

But only 26th largest per capita! Should that not be a truer reflection of a countries wealth?

Support for the EU in Greece has gone up since our vote to leave. Are you suggesting the Greeks have a poorer understanding of their country than you?

Ffs.... can none of you numbnuts even read ffs. Can u switch off that part of your tiny walnut sized brain that is procrastinating about whether the UK is 5th, 6th or whatever ranking in the world you decide to proclaim depending on which website you’ve discovered on gooogle. The question was how Brexit will affect the UKs relative position in years to come ( awaiting with bated breath how the numbnuts will avoid answering again by going down some different rabbit hole)

Can you answer how remaining in the eu would affect the relevant position on years to come?

Unless we join the euro and increase wages the seasonal workers will still not be coming to the uk to pick fruit as wages have increased in their home countries.

Of course we could soon be travelling to other countries to like back in the 80s when builders went to the likes of germany for the higher comparaitive wages.

GDP is irrelevant. In a society like ours where 10% of the population have 60% of the wealth. This means the other 90% can only access the other 40% of GDP. This makes our GDP comparable to a third world country for most of the population. Massive wealth disparity makes general statistics irrelevant

I don't think he's listening, he just wants to hear that brexit will make him poorer,I think it probably will because I suspect he's a middle class numpty with a good wage who thinks multiculturalism is eating in an Afghan restaurant while snorting in the toilets.
