You aren't racist

I keep getting told that. That it hasn't got any worse. That you were once told something rude so you know what it's like.

You could take some time to listen to this bit I doubt that you will.

I also doubt that you would be able to be honest enough with your self to contemplate the possibility.

However, for what it's worth:

No comments from those always saying that racism has nothing whatsoever to do with them?

Too much of an investment in time and thought?

Of course it is

Did you listen to the programme or are you giving your opinion without having done so?

You don't feel that you need to because you already know all that you need to?

To be fair to _estival, 28 minutes is quite a long time to have to spend to possibly be told something you already knew or something you're never going to agree with.

For the record I haven't watched it all yet but I do intend to, eventually.

I’ll have a listen after work.

I think asking people to listen is more difficult than asking them to watch something.

“Hello privilege .Its me,Chelsea.”

Is an interesting documentary on Netflix. All about how white privilege effects American culture.

It’s over an hour long so not everyone will have the attention span.

Racism is everywhere!! Mate of mine went to a zoo in Thailand and had to pay extra because he's white! Another guy i know went for a job at a barber's in town and was refused because he "didn't look Turkish enough"! And don't even get me started about the fella who went for a job as a chef at the local takeaway! You'd think anyone could cook special fried rice, but no only if you're from China apparently! World's gone mad!

Really?

Your mate did not get past the first stage of selection for whatever because he was white and straight?

Do things that happen round you often? Could it be that your mate is a bit militant about the colour of their skin and their sexuality? Could it be that you are making the whole thing up to make a point?

Just asking, because I never asked anyone about their sexuality when I was interviewing potential employees. In fact all I was interested in was their ability to do the job safely and work as part of the team.

I take the Avenue Q approach to racism. And that’s we are all a little bit racist.

Once you come to terms with that you can make positive change and understand a bit more.

Love this logic.

So if the non-racists are the most racist. Does that mean that the most racist people are in fact not racist.

But if the non-racists are actually racist. Then that means they're back to being racist. Which means they're actually not racist. Which means.......

I think this is the truth of it and is rather the point of the program.

Denying any racist or sexist thoughts is being dishonest with yourself.

I am cautious around black men dressed a certain way, or suspicious of bearded Asian men with ruck sacks on the tube. I am also wary of white men with bald heads and tattoos. I will wonder if 30 year old woman I'm interviewing is going to have a baby.

However, I am aware of these thoughts and make an effort to put them to one side. However, after years I still have to make a continuous effort.

Luckily some people are absolutely not in any way prejudiced or even need to consider the possibility that they might be.

Impressive.

I think racism is an inherent human condition. It’s programmed into the dna from an age of tribalism and far beyond.

Humans have the intelligence (....) to acknowledge that and change their mindset and when that’s achieved, racism will die.

However, there’s fear of the unknown and for the knuckle draggers amongst us, ethnicity is the only thing seen and not the individual.

It’s about education on ALL sides- it’s not a white-only condition. My hopes for the future on this? Hmmm not high

Fair question- I confess, I have not had time to watch the whole hour. Others on the thread have also written the same as me.

Much as Easy’s post, I accept I’m inherently racist but I look beyond stereotypes and see individuals rather than masses. I work in multi-ethnic workplaces, all around the world and come from a country settled by white Europeans (mainly from the UK) so am aware I am an in-comer in every country I work in.

I don’t often listen to podcasts and prefer a visual medium.

The podcast is an interesting listen that easy put up.

It acknowledges it’s an awkward conversation but a necessary and enlightening one.

The Netflix documentary is more focused on America and it’s history and where it is today.

There's enough in the popular media telling everyone they're racist and trying to find more racism where there probably isn't any.

I agree that those who virtue signal the loudest and are the first to bring racism up in a debate, are more likely to be racist themselves ("it's not their fault they have the misfortune of being black")

It was an interesting listen. Many crossovers in my mind with sexism. I haven't heard critiques of un conscious bias training before but it makes sense, and of course the link to structural changes being needed, perhaps even rather than trying to change opinions. It also made me think of the growing role of AI in our (working) lives and the inbuilt bias we are finding in those computer programmes - a step in the wrong direction.

I agree. Racism and sexism are similar. The only difference is that most men want sex with women so dress their sexism up.

There is an interesting TED talk on accidentally embedding prejudice in AI.
