The governments historic high street fund

The proposed funding to restore classic high streets sums up everything that is wrong with this government. Firstly it is not tackling the lack of tax revenue from online traders which directly undermines the high street. Secondly it does not address the high business rates which are a direct result of the move away from central government subsidies to local government. Thirdly it sounds like the equivalent of the National Trust for commercial properties whereby we are expected to work in a chocolate box Downton Abbey type facade for the benefit of Chinese tour groups while slinking off at night to exist in our repurposed shipping containers?

Fourthly I wonder what other budget has been cut to find this money? Finally I also wonder whether this money is targeted at pro Brexit areas? Am I too cynical?

I am in Stafford at mo.

A town that feels like it was probably the bees knees in the 19th century but has been bypassed by a lot more than the M6 since.

Its town centre is bleak. More empty shops than occupied ones and a seemingly disproportionate socio-economic feel to the people.

This was a Leave area apparently. I'd call it neglected England.

People drive the demise of the high street because they want cheaper and cheaper fashion and other stuff that the shops cannot compete with.

Councils keep raising the business rates and price the shops out and then give discounts to charity shops

I mean at the root of it is capitalism itself.

Seeing Tories who worship at altar of Thatcher trying to fight market forces is kinda weird.
