Well this diverts the media nicely from her son doesn't it?

But in all seriousness I think she had little choice to make that decision. She's not going to be the direct cause of the inevitable constitutional crisis that is looming. And I say that as a remainer who'do gladly see the back of the royals

For those who wish to see the end of the Monarchy, is a President going to be:

a. Cheaper.

b. as much of a tourist attraction.

c. look as good on a stamp.

Given how much America spends on protection for every living ex president, and the fact that people with enough money (i.e. Trump) can get elected, would we really benefit from replacing a Constitutional Figurehead who generally goes along with whatever the Prime Minister of the day says, with an elected representative who may actively work against the Prime Minister?

is it a waste or a huge business interest. The amount of money brought in by torrisum due to a monarchy far out strips the cost

Who, just who comes to London or England to ‘see’ the queen? The tourist line is always trotted out & has no validity, it is history which does include a monarchy that draws them in.. no one goes to Egypt beacause they might see Tutankhamun, but they go to see the pyramids.

The queen is just the physical representation of the monarchy. The firm will eventually recognise that it's in trouble and creak into action to try and ensure it's continuation with a suitable figurehead.

But in all seriousness I think she had little choice to make that decision. She's not going to be the direct cause of the inevitable constitutional crisis that is looming. And I say that as a remainer who'do gladly see the back of the royals"

I’m in a similar position, ie remainer who has some understanding of constitutional history. Last time a monarch ignored advice of Prime minister was Queen Anne in 1705 (or thereabouts)

And that's the whole point that this thread is missing, the protocol is just that - a protocol, she's a figurehead and was never going to step up. I'm not sure why anyone is surprised by that

Who actually owns the whole of the United Kingdom? The Queen does, by right of conquest and inheritance. What do you think “Freehold” actually means? Answer: held for the monarch rent-free. So add up all of the freehold property values in the United Kingdom. The total has to be astronomical. London’s West End alone is worth billions.

Who is the head of all of the armed forces in Great Britain? Answer: the monarch.

Who owns all of the currency in circulation? Answer: the monarch – that’s why her head is on all of our coins and notes.

Who has the final say in whether each and every new law is legal? You all know that now.

Who owns all of the land between low and high tides? Guess!

Who owns all of the swans?

And there must be a lot more.

The Queen is, in theory, the richest person in the world by a very long way – even richer than the Kings of Saudi Arabia and Thailand. And she is one of the top ten most powerful people in the world. Our armed forces are far superior to Saudi’s and Thailand’s.

And she’s all ours!

All of this is “theoretical”, and the popular media keep quiet about it. But there could come a time when a monarch decides to exercise all of his rights and powers, including the dissolution of Parliament. He would be an EXTREMELY powerful dictator. (Head of the armed forces – remember?)

I recently took my granddaughters to London and all they wanted to do was go to Buckingham palace... Windsor castle and other royal palaces.. those that say the Royal family do nothing should try being them for a bit. How many ladies of the queens age still work the hours she does???

I think it's like saying you like or dislike a particular celebrity. Very few people actually know them personally but they can form and are entitled to hold an opinion on their public persona.

I like Queen Elizabeth 1st and intensely dislike Henry 8th but I unsurprisingly, didn't know either of them

I quite often wonder what they're really like. They can no more help the circumstances they were born into than the rest of us can so on that I have some sympathy for them.

What I don't like or agree with is the almost sacred status they hold e.g. staff at places they visit being told they must not offer their hand to shake unless the royal visitor does. I also really dislike their privilege, for example William and Kate looking distressed at a charity visit before being ushered into a chauffeured car and driven back to immense wealth and comfort. It doesn't sit well with me however nice they are in person

The handshake thing is more tradition I think. I also think if any of us had immense wealth, comfort, privilege, we wouldn't be complaining and would not like being slagged off repeatedly.

I have seen the BBC news, I am not in the least bit surprised by BJ and his actions. But the monarchy are servants of parliament so the queen had no choice but to agree, the request is not out of the normal anyway as parliament generally takes time off from July until October.

But I like having a royal family, it makes for some quirky interesting stuff in the UK, and they are pretty much free of charge as well as keeping a hell of a lot of people employed either directly or indirectly.

Having the queen means we don't have to elect a Britain Trump!

The Royal Family are a symbolic entity with no real power in modern politics. They do however bring a lot of money and tourism into the country.

The money that they get "paid" is actually money given back to them from the MUCH larger sum of money that The Crown Estate gives to the country. They have an agreed percentage of the total income that is returned to them (20% possibility)

The Queen is just the figurehead. Boris has prorogued Parliament.

I am very pro Europe and pro European but the squabbling is increasingly ridiculous amongst MPs.. Get us in or get us out ASAP.

God Save the Queen.

We are not royalist, but the thought of a President like Trump as an option Does any anyone remember Votes for English law should not include Scottish MPs. Now we have the DUP, all 10 of them, dragging us into the abyss!

We think we should give Northern Ireland independence. That will solve a lot of problems and force them to resolve their differences!!!

"Who actually owns the whole of the United Kingdom?

"

Ah yes the aircraft-less carriers, destroyers that break down, a handful of tanks, helicopters now twice the age of their pilots and still the same Hooray Henry officer class throughout. The British armed forces, the rest of the world's laugh.

They're hardly the New Model Army man.

The deal on the table is we have no sovereignty over our fishing rights, we give the EU more money than we currently do, we can't negotiate trade deals with anyone except the EU and we can't actually leave unless or until the EU says we can.

Not much of a deal at all really!

Labour has a duty to oppose the government, that's why it is called the opposition! It may be a stupid system but it is how it is. The difference is many conservatives and most other parties are voting against the government too, otherwise it would win.

BJ is probably right the only way out is to just leave, that way he can save the payments to the EU to prop up his shareholder mates as their companies collapse so only unimportant people can't afford food or housing

Ok, tell me how property, money, jewels she inherited should belong to the country, those are hers. It doesn't matter if you don't like the monarchy, those things belong to her. She's had gifts given to her that belong to her, all this adds up to what she's worth and none of that belongs to the country.

In 2016 we spent £13.4 billion pounds on overseas aid OP. If this is your spit in the ocean then why so bitter about the Queen's £8 billion.

From your posts OP it seems you want a revolution to oust our monarch, seize her assets, disband the House of Lords and presumably your new Wolfie Smith army will take residence at Windsor Castle. The Monarch owns The Crown Estate and signs its income over to the Exchequer at the beginning of their reign in return for the Royal Settlement of the Privy Purse. This is enacted in law (Civil List Act), at any time the government of the day can repeal the Civil List Act and both the Royal Settlement will cease, of course the Crown Estate will revert to the Crown at the same time and according to their last Annual Report (2018) they made a £329.4 million net profit of which 75% went to the Exchequer, the other 25% paid for the Civil List. So the Queen pays herself not a penny of tax goes to the Crown!

See the Crown Estate Annual report 1018:

https://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/media/2589/the_crown_estate_annual_report_2018.pdf

and the Sovereign Grant Act Report 2017/2018.

https://www.royal.uk/sites/default/files/media/sovereigngrant2017-18_final.pdf

Now all you anti-monarchists please tell me exactly how much the Crown cost UK taxpayers.

Exactly. A waste of space. Nothing the position does deserves our 8 billion pounds! "

You keep mentioning £8billion - do you have a source? Or a timescale that that relates to?

So what would you replace our constitutional monarchy with? Let me guess a come day go day politician looking to use their time in office to line up lots of cushy numbers to line their pockets and feather their and their families nests once they get kicked out, or perhaps you would prefer a 'strongman' to size power and take on the job for life?

"I'm not looking to replace the monarchy. I'd like to reform it. "

How?

Remember it has been paying for itself for the past 200 years and at present the Monarchs 'family business' (The Crown Estate) pays 75% of its annual net profits to the state. Maybe while telling us all how you would reform the Monarchy you will name another business that pays an equivalent amount of its profits to the British State?

Well I willingly swore an oath to defend her and her heirs and successors in person Crown and dignity when I joined our armed forces, I doubt I would have done that if I had to swear an oath to an Office that was up for grabs by the politician to climb to the top of that particularly unpleasant greasy pole.
