Empty Shops ,Ghost Towns,about to get WORSE !

Jeremy Corbyn wants local councils to have powers to take over empty shops if left vacant for more than 12 months.The local councils are the main cause of the problem in the first place ,excessive business rates.. how is it possible to start a new start-up business with excessive rates ! they'd been more boarded up shops not less... Who would the rent be paid to ? Who will pay for repairs to premises? Most local authorities cannot run a whelk stall economically how can they manage retail properties without it costing the domestic ratepayers a fortune

The main reason for the struggle high street isn't council rates, it's internet shopping. Even if shops paid zero business rates, many would still not be able to compete with amazon and the likes.

I fear you are right, even if they let someone start a business with very minimal rent and very minimal rates or no rates they'd still then charge £1,000 a minute to park nearby.. down to the councils again.

I have been thinking for a while that the concept of “towns” is about to revert to the medieval concept. In those times, people lived in town centre and the markets and food production (business) was out of town.

Over the years, the town centres became the places of business and people lived outside of the towns. I think we are going to see this reverse again.

one of the problems i can see with this is you take over empty propertys against the owners wishes i see court cases right there.also if your gona give new shops help with no rates and other sweetners thats more reasons for court cases from shops already there about unfair competition.reason mpst high streets are dying is parking charges and why go down the high st when you can pop ten mins down the road and go to a shoppung park or buy it online and have it delivered.my local high st all you get is homeless people pick pockets and charitys accosting you in the street teying to lighten ya wallet. not really enticing

If you like radical socialism then give Labour a try next time. They will nationalise everything including your own home. We will all become an asset of the state. If you don't like that idea then don't vote for him. It's as simple as that really.

They would rather have them empty than reduce rents on them, and in consequence, on the shops that are already let.

I was talking to a retired couple only last week who were saying how sad it was that the shops on the high steet were empty and borded up , they had both worked in retail all their lives (having actually met at work) , adding that they had to get off as they had ordered goods off Amazon which were due to be delivered that afternoon ,,, so well done Corbyn and the Labour Party for at least recognising there is a problem

Take a walk down any high street, what do you see?

Tanning shops, betting shops and maybe a Subway next door to the Semi Chem. . High streets died when councils saw high street shopping as a milk cow, business rates soared. Next came Out Of Town shopping malls . .

The age of the small independent shop keeper has well and truly died

The vast majority of shops in my town are just service shops now.

Hairdressers, takeaways, supermarkets, charity shops and estate agents.

The Internet in my view has been the biggest singular reason for the majority of shops closing down and lack of being able to rock up outside in your car and nip in to shop the second biggest reason.

I like the small independents so use them in preference to multi nationals and I don't shop online. Maybe it's an age thing but the equation is simple....spend your cash with independents and they will survive.
